Attention, Adult Amateur Flutists!
*Do you avoid playing for people because of performance anxiety?
*Have you recently started playing again after a long time?
*Are you a beginning adult flute student?
*Do you have questions about playing that you are afraid to ask because you think you should already know the answers?
If you have answered "yes" to any of those questions, then you should consider coming to Second Winds meetings in the new year. Attendees range in age from the early 20's to mid 70's. Some people have not played in years; some are beginning players; some have had several years of lessons but fear playing in front of other people. Second Winds provides the perfect opportunity to practice performing and building confidence with plenty of support, understanding, and encouragement.
A typical meeting begins with the group (usually four to eight people) sight-reading some easy music just for fun -- no stress! Then people who have prepared solos (or perhaps a duet) play for the group. There is always informal talk about various flute-playing and musical challenges.
Is performing a requirement? Absolutely not! Come to a meeting just to see what Second Winds is like, but bring your flute so you can play with the group. You may find that later you would like to play something by yourself.
The group gathers every other month at St. Philip Lutheran Church, 7304 Falls of the Neuse Road in Raleigh. The meetings start at 2:30 and last for approximately an hour and a half.
The next meeting happens on Sunday, February 5, 2012. Come one and all!! For more information, contact Mary Croghan at croghanm@gmail.com or 919-835-4378.

Highlights from Flute Fair 2011

The RAFA board presented Rosene Rohrer (right) with a photo collage in honor of her 25 years as RAFA president. The collage was created by Catherine LeGrand (left).

A special part of our Flute Fair this year was celebrating Rosene Rohrer's 25th year as our President! Those of you who were there know that we surprised her a couple of times during that busy day.
The RAFA Board is especially excited about establishing a scholarship in her name that will be awarded at our 2012 Review and Contest.
Perhaps you also would like to recognize the many years of dedicated leadership Rosene has given RAFA by adding to this scholarship. If so, you may write a check, payable to RAFA, with a note for "RR Scholarship," and mail to:

Now I Know Why: RAFA Guest Artists Jill Felber and Dianne Felber
Now I know why Jill Felber, flute, and Dianne Frazer, piano, are such popular guest artists at flute events. I've previously hung out with them and heard them perform, but never have I witnessed their total immersion, energy, brilliance, and musicianship over the course of an entire day. The experience for me, and the members of our flute association, was exceptional.
These two women are authentic beings, down to earth, fun-loving, and devoted to their art at the highest level. The master class was filled with wisdom, clarity and breakthrough moments. Our RAFA members raved about Jill's Extreme Makeover: Flute Edition. I witnessed a huge roomful of flute players of all levels as they learned her sequence of transformative exercises. The level of passion, joy, skill, and encouragement that Jill brought to this class energized me, and I didn't even have my flute along!
The highlight for me, though, was the concert, in which these two who've been friends for 25 years displayed a breathtaking level of performance. Besides the standard flute works of the Undine Sonata, the Fantaisie Pastorale Hongroise, and the Rutter Jazz Waltz, Jill and Dianne performed several selections from their new CD, Fusions. These are classical pieces "fused" with popular standards. Audience members were so touched that many sniffles were heard and tears flowed. Their music, played with sublime skill and from the heart, touched my soul deeply. While some might say that performing outside standard concert fare is not to their liking, I say that those who walk the path of their own individual spirit, the way these women do, are those most fulfilled in their music making and who most resonate with their audiences.
Jill and Dianne laugh a lot, on stage and off. They love life, and they love all the people, art, nature, and, of course, chocolate, they encounter.
Yes, now I know why.

CD Review: Fusion
Fusion is the title of the new CD by flutist Jill Felber and pianist Dianne Frazer. These two stellar musicians have blended, on every track, two pieces of music, classical and non-classical. One of my favorites is their fusion of The Prayer by David Foster with the Rachmaninoff Vocalise. I also loved the combination of Richard Strauss' Morgen with Ian Clarke's Orange Dawn. But deepest to my heart is the arrangement of the aria Lascia ch'io pianga from Handel's opera Rindaldo followed by the Faure Morceau de Concours. I heard Jill and Dianne perform the Handel alone as an encore at their recital at Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore in February, 2010 and went slightly crazy. I got on my knees and begged these two amazing musicians to record this stirring, luscious, heart-opening arrangement. I guess they caved in to my pitiful supplications.
This entire recording is relaxing, peaceful, serene, calming. Jill Felber, among the most elite of our flutists, and Dianne Frazer, among the most elite of our pianists, have been friends for 25 years, and their lifelong collaboration of single-minded precision, interpretation and phrasing can be perceived here, just as it can at their live performances. I love it when classical musicians at the top of their game break out their creativity and produce innovative recordings like this that embrace a variety of musical styles.
I bought four copies from Carolyn Nussbaum Music Company, www.flute4u.com - one for myself and three for former students. Two of them are in graduate school (one in flute and one in French) and need some soothing music (!), and one is in yoga teacher training - this would be a great CD for all kinds of relaxation/meditative/massage/etc. activities.
A beautiful flute CD to give as a gift or keep for yourself.....or both!

Dutch, Anyone?
Congratulations to RAFA member Ann Pearce, who was recently featured in an article in the Dutch Flute Society publication Fluit, Nederlands Fluit Genootschap. A copy of the high-quality, 68-page glossy magazine appeared in Ann's mailbox a few weeks ago, and she was surprised and delighted to discover that the article, written by Fransje de Visser as a description of the National Flute Association Convention in Charlotte this past August, was mostly devoted to the creative work of Ann as a composer/arranger of flute choir works. Ms. Visser includes four photos; one photo is of the RAFA YouTube Flute Choir as we performed "Popcorn Polka," with boomwhackers in full evidence! Prior to August, Fransje and Ann had been emailing each other, and then they made a point to meet at the convention. Now Ann is hoping someone can assist in translating the complete text as written by her new friend from across the pond!

Doctor and Flutist Nate Painter
By Helen Spielman
"Hey, Helen," my husband called as he arrived home from his job as an anesthesiologist at UNC Hospitals one day last spring, "a guy who has applied to our department plays the flute."
"Well for heaven's sake--if he's a flutist, hire him!" I replied.
It took a long time for the wheels to turn, but Dr. Nate Painter begins his position as Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology in Chapel Hill on December 1, 2011. I'm delighted to introduce Nate to area flutists and welcome him warmly into our midst. Read more...
