Highland United Methodist Church
1901 Ridge Road, Raleigh

More than 120 flutists from North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, and Virginia will flock to Highland United Methodist Church on Sunday afternoon, November 6 to participate in RAFA's 27th annual Review and Contest.  Each participant will perform two solos for written evaluation and an opportunity to receive cash awards. Coordinator Lauren Robbins-Pollack is currently assigning specific performance times for everyone.  Teachers and adult participants will be contacted shortly with the afternoon's schedule.  Teachers are then responsible for sharing this information with their students. Please remember that only original music is acceptable (no copies are permitted).  Also remember to provide an extra original for the judges.

Also mark your calendar for the Contest Winners' Recital on Friday, November 11, 7:30 p.m., also at Highland United Methodist Church. This recital is open to the public at no admission cost. Refreshments will be served after the recital.

Review and Contest questions can be directed to Lauren Robbins-Pollack at (919) 557-2272 or density21.5@earthlink.net

Fusion CD

fusion cd

RAFA's November 12 Flute Fair guest artists Jill Felber (flute) and Dianne Frazer (piano) joined forces to release 'Fusion,' a CD of seven fused arrangements of melodies from Strauss to Ian Clarke, Foster to Rachmaninoff, Handel to Faure and more. Their RAFA appearance will include a concert featuring several of these clever arrangements. Copies of the CD will be available for sale in the Exhibit Hall that day.

Jill and Dianne offer this explanation of the project:

"This recording is a fusion in so many ways. Two friends who met 25 years ago unite to blend evocative melodies, classical and non-classical. This project was born to honor the souls of family and friends gone by and to warm the spirits of our new friends."

Review of Alexander Technique Class

ATworkshop.skeleton
Rachel shows us how we are constructed

About 25 eager learners arrived, with yoga mats and flutes in hand, to learn about the benefits of the Alexander Technique with teachers Pamela Nelson and Rachel Niketopoulos on Sunday, September 25. After a brief introduction, the group was soon moving about the room in a relaxed, balanced manner, being aware of places where we tend to hold extra tension as we stand, breathe, walk, sit, play flute, and go about daily activities. Revising old habits involves being aware of these tension points and then learning to let go and release that tension. The final portion of the session was spent lying on the floor on mats to practice our 20 minutes of "daily homework." By the end of the afternoon, everyone agreed that we were definitely feeling more free, open, and relaxed . . . and a bit reluctant to leave! Thank you, Pam & Rachel!

Class participant Rosemary Caudle adds, "In the Alexander technique class, I learned to think differently about how I used my body.  I plan to definitely include the "floor time" in my daily routine and really hope this increases my breath capacity!!  I also will be looking for some floor space right before the RAFA Review in November!"
