Behind the Scenes on Broadway!
Featuring New York flutist David Weiss
Sunday, April 17
2:00 - 5:00 pm
Umstead Park United Church of Christ
8208 Brownleigh Dr, Raleigh
Just off US-70 (Glenwood Ave)
(near Umstead Park entrance)
Join us for an exciting afternoon as New York flutist David Weiss shares stories, music and videos in a multi-media presentation, giving us a glimpse into the fascinating life of a Broadway musician!
Dave Weiss' list of Broadway credits include The Lion King, Riverdance, Miss Saigon, Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, Cats, A Chorus Line, and more, and the list of major movie soundtracks, commercials, video games, and operas that he has performed is just as impressive. He will share how he developed the music for The Lion King and Miss Saigon, and talk about what real life is like for a flutist on backstage Broadway and NYC's recording studios through his endless array of charming, amazing, and sometimes hilarious stories. Hear Dave play on Irish and Native American flutes, panpipes, East Indian bansuri and other flutes, watch clips of his movies and commercials, and learn how he uses technology in the ever-changing New York musical scene.
Don't miss it! Mark your calendar and plan to join us!

Exciting Opportunity!
This year's National Flute Association (NFA) convention will be held in Charlotte, NC from August 11-14. An insane amount of fluting will be happening right in our backyard! To quote the brochure, "Celebrate and embrace our world community at this year's convention featuring four full days of concerts, masterclasses, workshops, lectures, recitals, and special events." We have not only one flute choir, but TWO choirs performing at this year's convention. The Raleigh Flute Choir will be performing Thursday, August 11 at 7 p.m., featuring the music of Ann Pearce. Also, the RAFA YouTube Flute Choir will be performing Thursday the 11th at 11:30 a.m., featuring the music of North Carolina composers and arrangers.
We would like to invite all advanced (advanced high school, advanced college, and advanced adult amateur) and professional flutists to join the YouTube Flute Choir for this performance. This is a great opportunity and we hope many of you can join us for the performance!
If you would like to participate, director Sonja Noykos will need a final
commitment by June 15th (reminders will be sent as we get closer to the date). But if you would like your name to be in the program and can make the commitment soon, you will need to email her at sonjanoykos@gmail.com within one week, by Monday, MARCH 14. Sonja is required to submit the performer's information by March 15. We apologize that the deadline is very short. If you can commit to the performance, email Sonja by the 14th with the exact spelling of your name.

Here are the costs:
- RAFA 2011-2012 membership: $15 students/$25 adults (due by August 1st)
- RAFA YouTube Flute Choir fee: $5 (to cover music copying and postage) (due at our first rehearsal, July 17th)
- NFA 2011-2012 membership: $85 active/$70 active e-member/$50 student/$40 student e-member (due by July 1st)
- NFA convention fee: $250 full convention active/$140 one day only active/$135 full convention student/$80 one day only student (due by July 1st)
- If a spouse or parent, etc. will be attending the convention, that fee is $80/person, which is for either one day or the full convention (no discounts for one day). Or they can pay just for the concert, for $15 adults (daytime event) or $10 students (daytime event).
- If you are attending the whole convention and want to stay at one of the two hotels affiliated with the convention, prices range from $151-154 per night for a single/double, $164-171 for a triple, to $174-191 per night for a quad. We can certainly try to coordinate between the members of the group about sharing hotel rooms.
- Parking at the convention center or hotels will range from $6-25 a day. Again, perhaps we could work out some carpooling amongst the group, to save on parking and gas.

|
Because Charlotte is relatively close, it would be possible for you to drive to Charlotte early Thursday morning and leave later that day, if time and finances keep you from attending the whole convention. Yes, this is all quite expensive, but also a lot more feasible to attend this year than any other year because the convention is so close!

Rehearsals, all in Raleigh (exact location TBD):
- Sunday, July 17, 5-7 p.m.
- Sunday, July 31st, 5-7 p.m.
- Tuesday, August 9th, 7:30-9:30
Since it is summer and people are often out of town, you will be allowed one excused absence, but you must attend at least two of these three rehearsals.
We hope you can join the RAFA YouTube Flute Choir for its NFA convention debut!

RAFA YouTube Flute Choir Spring Session
This flute choir is a new group that rehearses, video records, and then posts flute choir pieces on YouTube. We met for the first time in January, recorded five pieces, and posted them on YouTube. Check out our channel at http://www.youtube.com/user/RaleighAreaFluteAssn. We'll meet only about three times a year, so it's not a huge time commitment (register for one date at a time; you do not need to participate in each session). This is for advanced (high school, college, adult amateur) and professional flutists (you will be asked to provide some information about yourself; may require teacher recommendation and/or audition).
Our next rehearsal/recording session will be Saturday, April 30th,2011 from 1-4 p.m. at St. Philip Lutheran Church, 7304 Falls of Neuse Rd., Raleigh, 27615. You must be a Raleigh Area Flute Association member, and there's an additional cost of $5/person to cover music copying and postage.
The DEADLINE to register is Wednesday, March 23, 2011, for either postmarking the registration form (download) or emailing the info requested on the form to Sonja Noykos at sonjanoykos@gmail.com. You will receive your music by April 9th.
Interested but can't make this session? No worries; there will be more sessions. When you register, it's just for one date at a time. Our repertoire for this spring session will be the same music that we'll play at the convention in August (see other article), but you are not required to participate in both the spring session and the August performance. We certainly hope some people will be able to do both, but we understand that not everyone will be able to do that. So to be clear, you can participate on April 30th but not in August, and vice-versa.
The YouTube postings will raise awareness of RAFA, help promote flute choirs and flute choir music, be a resource for other flutists, and more.
Questions? Contact Sonja Noykos at sonjanoykos@gmail.com or 616-634-3292.

Second Winds
The Second Winds met on Sunday afternoon, February 13th, with eight members present -- a good turnout! We enjoyed playing together and sharing the flute news in our lives. Two members played a duet to be presented at the Solo/Ensemble Fest in April.
Our next meeting will be held on Sunday, March 27th, at 2:00 in the parlor at St. Philip Lutheran Church 7304 Falls of the Neuse Rd.
This meeting offers a perfect venue and time to practice playing Solo/ Ensemble Fest music before a friendly, sympathetic audience. The Solo/ Ensemble Fest occurs the next weekend. So come one and all -- any adult amateur flutist is welcome, especially if he or she needs to work on overcoming performance anxiety, our special focus!
Get in touch with Mary Croghan, coordinator, if you have questions: (919-835-4378; croghanm@gmail.com) |
