NCSU presents flutist Harvey Sollberger

Harvey Sollberger

"New Music for Flute and Guitar"

Wednesday, February 16

7:00 pm

Titmus Theatre, Thompson Hall

(adjacent to main parking deck)

NCSU Campus

Tickets $10; call 919-515-1100

New music composer and flutist Harvey Sollberger will perform works by Carter, Cavallone, Sciarrino, Villa-Lobos, and Sollberger himself. The concert will also feature the talents of Western North Carolina guitarist Paul Bowman, who recently completed his doctorate studying with Sollberger at the University of California at San Diego. One of the special features of the recital will be the North Carolina premiere of NCSU Music Department Director J. Mark Scearce's "Bird by Bird," written in memory of composer Olivier Messiaen, himself fond of bird songs in his own works. Scearce's work uses the songs of ten different birds, one per movement, with Wednesday's recital featuring the goldfinch, robin, blackbird, kestrel, and mockingbird. Scearce's wife, noted coloratura soprano Leda Scearce, for whom the work was written, will join Sollberger in presenting these pieces.

Solo/Ensemble Fest

We hope many of you are busily preparing your music for RAFA's 7th annual Solo/Ensemble Fest, which will be held at Meredith College on Saturday,

April 2.

Registration deadline is March 1. See links below for music list, rules & guidelines, and registration form.

Open to all ages and levels, this event has two options. Participants can choose to enter the solo category and/or can choose to enter as an ensemble (duet, trio, or quartet). Awards are given based on performance, and each participant also receives a written review.

The music list is divided into six levels: Grades A through F. The solo category requires flutists to play scales, etudes, and solos from the music list, while the ensemble category requires only the performance of the duet, trio, or quartet selected from the music list. Grade levels should be assigned according to the performer's ability and determined by the teacher. Questions can be directed to coordinator Anne Dyke at 919-755-2267 or annedyke@aol.com.

Second Winds

 Second Winds Fall 2010

Are you a new adult amateur flutist in the area? Then consider trying out a cool group of people who get together every other month to play together and separately. The first meeting of the Second Winds in 2011 will be held on Sunday, February 13th, at 2:00 in the parlor of St. Philip Lutheran Church at 7304 Falls of the Neuse Rd. We had such a grand meeting in early December -- let's keep it up! Hope to see all the regulars plus some new people! If there are questions, e-mail or call Mary Croghan (919-835-4378; croghanm@gmail.com) or consult the RAFA website.

Twenty-one flutists met together on a brisk Saturday in early January to rehearse and record flute choir music to post on YouTube as a resource to flutists and flute choirs. Thanks to Sonja Noykos, who spearheaded the effort and conducted the choir. Work continues on uploading a few of the pieces, but you can check out the recordings that are ready for viewing on RAFA's YouTube channel:

A spring recording session, open to advanced high school and adult flutists, will be scheduled soon. Stay tuned for details.

Yusheng Zhang

Congratulations to Yusheng Zhang, 8th grader at Phillips Middle School in Chapel Hill, who won first prize in Durham Community Concert Band's Concerto Competition. A student of Alma Coefman, Yusheng will perform the Chaminade Concertino with the Durham Concert Band on April 3 at 7:00 pm in Baldwin Auditorium on Duke University's East Campus. In Yusheng's words, " I've been playing the flute for three years and like it very much-I am always happy when I pick up my flute. I play for my 8th grade band and enjoy competing at District and Honors Band. This year and the year before I made first chair at District, and I am striving to improve every day."

We also salute Taylor James, who was selected by audition to perform Gordon Jacob's Concerto for Flute in the Triangle Youth Philharmonic Honors Recital on January 23. Taylor, a junior at Middle Creek High School in Apex, studies flute with Julie Frederick.

Kudos to flutists Taylor James, Katerina Koloustroubis and Natalie Bader, who auditioned successfully for seats in the N.C. Symphony's Winter Young All-Stars Orchestra. The All-Stars Orchestra is a twice-annual (winter & spring) opportunity for talented musicians ages 14-19 to perform in a chamber orchestra led by Maestro Grant Llewellyn. Details at
