A Presentation by Helen Spielman

  Sunday, November 14 - 5:00 pm

CHICLE (above Weaver Street Market - 3rd floor, Suite G-1)

(Chapel Hill Institute for Cultural and Language Education)

101 East Weaver St, Carrboro

 Free admission.

Helen will share stories and photos from her recent trip to Honduras to teach performance confidence at the Fifth Latinoamerica Festival for the Flute at the National Music School in Tegucigalpa. Helen says, "I will talk about the wonderful heart-opening connections I made with the people I met and worked with, as well as the tragedy that occurred during the festival, when one of the faculty members at the school was killed on his way to the school, a daily occurrence with which these young students of an exceptionally warm, kind, and generous people must cope on a daily basis."

Review & Contest Results

This past Sunday, 111 flutists flooded the halls and classrooms of Highland United Methodist Church for RAFA's 26th annual Review & Contest.  The student and adult performers, representing 28 teaching studios across North Carolina and Virginia, performed two solos for a pair of judges, who provided written evaluations and selected winners in each of the eight divisions.

Congratulations to the Contest winners, who will perform in the Contest Winners' Recital on Friday, November 12 at 7:30 pm at Highland United Methodist Church, 1901 Ridge Rd, Raleigh.  We hope you will join us for this inspiring recital by our talented young flutists!  The performance, free to the public, will be followed by a reception.

Special thanks is due to Contest Coordinator Lauren Robbins-Pollack (organizer extraordinaire!) and the team of dedicated volunteers who judged, served as door monitors, staffed the registration table, provided refreshments, and took care of set-up and take-down.  We appreciate your commitment, energy and expertise!

Introducing...

The RAFA YouTube Flute Choir

  • A new flute choir that will rehearse, video record, and then post flute choir pieces on YouTube
  • Meets only three times a year, so it's not a huge time commitment (register for one date at a time; you do not need to participate in all three)
  • For advanced/professional flutists (you will be asked to provide some information about yourself; may require teacher recommendation)
  • Our first rehearsal/recording session will be Saturday, January 8th, 2011 from 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m. (bring a lunch)
  • Rehearsal/recording location: St. Philip Lutheran Church, 7304 Falls of Neuse Rd., Raleigh, 27615
  • You must be a Raleigh Area Flute Association member
  • Additional Cost: $5/person to cover music and mailing supplies
  • DEADLINE to register:  Wednesday, December 1st, 2010
  • Registration form must be postmarked/emailed to Sonja Noykos (director) by Dec. 1st
  • Registration forms available at Flute Fair or at raleighflutes.org
  • You will receive your music by Dec. 15th, 2010
  • Interested but can't make the January date?  No worries; see if you can make the next date in the spring of 2011.  When you register, it's just for one date at a time.
  • The YouTube postings will raise awareness of RAFA, help promote flute choirs and flute choir music, be a resource for other flutists, and more.
  • Questions?  Contact Sonja Noykos at 616-634-3292 or sonjanoykos@gmail.com

With the theme "Holiday Remembrances," the Raleigh Flute Choir celebrates its 23rd annual holiday concert at the North Carolina Museum of Art.  Performing on concert C-flutes, piccolo, alto, bass, and contrabass flutes, the ensemble will share sacred and seasonal favorites, as well as original compositions.

  The Second Winds

The Second Winds met as planned on Sunday, October 10th, with a group that was small in number but significant in enthusiasm. We played our flutes as a group, and several of us played solos -- great preparation for the RAFA Review!

Second Winds Fall 2010

Come one and all to the next meeting of Second Winds on Sunday, December 5th, at St. Philip Lutheran Church, 2:00 p.m. We will have fun playing Christmas music as a group. Maybe some attendees will wish to play solos, duets, or trios -- music can have a Christmas theme or not!
