Abell Flutes
Those of us who attended Kate Steinbeck and Chris Abell's delightful afternoon RAFA event on September 26 had the unique opportunity to learn about Chris' fascinating journey into the world of crafting wooden flutes and whistles and even got to try them out! If you missed that event, you will have another chance when Chris brings his wooden flutes and headjoints to the RAFA Flute Fair on Saturday, November 13. Be sure to bring your flute, too, so you can experience the warm tones of a wood headjoint on your flute. Learn more about Chris Abell's instruments at http://www.abellflute.com/
Brooks de Wetter-Smith tests the wood flute used in Kate Steinbeck's September 26 concert. |

Flute Fair - Opportunities to Perform
The November 13 Flute Fair will provide several performing opportunities for participants. Bring your flute and join in the learning and fun! Read below for details and to find which opportunities pertain to you.
Middle School & High School Students: All-District Solo Workshop (1:45 - 2:45 p.m.)
The November 13 Flute Fair will include workshops for middle school and high school students to prepare their All-District band solos (Gossec's Tambourin and Faure's Fantasie). Students interested in performing in the class should sign up by sending a request to info@RaleighFlutes.org. Performance slots for each class will be filled on a first-contacted, first-served basis. Other than having current membership in RAFA, there is no cost to the students to perform in these classes. Students who prefer to come and learn by observing and listening are also welcome!
All Ages: Flute Choir Reading Session (2:45 - 3:45 pm)
Led by flute choir director Sonja Noykos, this reading session is open to all levels and all ages. Just bring your flute and a music stand and join in the fun!
Advanced High School and Above: Orchestral Excerpts Workshop (12:30 - 1:30 pm) |
Happy 25th Anniversary, RAFA!
Help us celebrate RAFA's 25th year! To begin the celebration, the Flute Fair on November 13 will include cake, balloons, a photo collage of our history, samples of our first newsletters (we've come a long way!), and a free "RAFA 25th Anniversary" pencil for all who attend! We are so grateful to our 1985 founders Anna Ayres Smith, Rosene Rohrer, Ann Pearce, Ginny Zehr, and the myriad of flutists and volunteers since then who have created this vibrant flute community for all of us!
Local flutist and composer Ann Cameron Pearce is dedicating her newest composition to RAFA's 25th anniversary. "Cosmic Horizons" implies that "the sky is the limit" so far as what we have done and what we continue to do through RAFA. Our first 25 years have produced far-reaching programs that have influenced flutists of all types from professionals, amateurs, advanced students, elementary students, and everyone in between.
Hear the premiere of Ann Pearce's "Cosmic Horizons" performed by the Raleigh Flute Choir on October 24, 8:00 pm at Carswell Recital Hall, Meredith College. |

Review & Contest
More than 120 flutists from North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia will flock to Highland United Methodist Church on Sunday afternoon, November 7 to participate in RAFA's 26th annual Review and Contest. Each participant will perform two solos for written evaluation and an opportunity to receive cash awards. Coordinator Lauren Robbins-Pollack is currently assigning specific performance times for everyone. Teachers and adult participants will be contacted shortly with the afternoon's schedule. Teachers are then responsible for sharing this information with their students. Please remember that only original music is acceptable (no copies are permitted). Also remember to provide an extra original for the judges.
Also mark your calendar for the Contest Winners' Recital on Friday, November 12, 7:30 p.m. (also at Highland United Methodist Church). This recital is open to the public at no admission cost. Refreshments will be served after the recital.
Review and Contest questions can be directed to Lauren Robbins-Pollack at (919) 557-2272 or density21.5@earthlink.net |

Congratulations to flutist Andrea McKerlie, recipient of a RAFA scholarship awarded through Meredith College's Department of Music. Andrea expresses her appreciation in these words, "I am a sophomore at Meredith College pursuing a B.M. in Music Performance and plan to teach privately as well as play in community musical theatre programs, while also pursuing my other lifelong dream of writing novels and contributing to community journals and newspapers. I appreciate the donation and the recognition of this award, which further encourages me along my way and reinforces that dream!"
