RAFA Flute Choirs
RAFA's flute choirs will be starting up again soon and we'd love for you to join! While taking lessons, playing flute at home, performing, listening to music, going to concerts, etc., etc., are all wonderful, there is something to be said for playing and performing music with others. It is our hope that in a RAFA flute choir you'll become a better musician, have enjoyable musical experiences, and make friends, among other things. We believe there are many benefits to being in a flute choir!
Auditions for Silver Pipes and Silver Fantasy are August 22nd, beginning at 1:30 p.m., and August 29th, also beginning at 1:30 p.m. There is no audition for Silver Winds.
Silver Fantasy will now be rehearsing every Sunday from 5-6:30 p.m., beginning September 12th. Silver Pipes and Silver Winds will rehearse Sunday afternoons on the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Sundays of the month, beginning September 19th.
Also, anyone is welcome to join in on the flute choir reading session on August 22nd.
Auditions, and Reading Session, will be held at St. Philip Lutheran Church, 7304 Falls of the Neuse Road (North Raleigh, across from Ravenscroft athletic fields).
You must schedule an audition time in advance with the director. If the audition dates conflict with your schedule, please contact the director to work out another time.
For audition requirements please visit the "flute choir" pages on the NEW RAFA website!!
Or contact flute choir director, Sonja Noykos at 616-634-3292 or sonjsen@hotmail.com

Second Winds
Second Winds will have its first meeting of the 2010-2011 season on Sunday, August 29th, at 2:00 in the parlor of St. Philip Lutheran Church, 7304 Falls of the Neuse Road (across from Ravenscroft athletic fields). This group provides adult amateur players a wonderful opportunity to work on conquering performance anxiety, as we are a totally supportive, comforting, relaxed group.
Adult amateur flutists, come one and all! At this meeting on the 29th, we will first warm up together. Then those who wish to play solos (or duets or trios) will do so. Remember, playing alone is not a requirement! There is no theme for this meeting, so choose whatever you wish to play. Get in touch with Mary Croghan if you have questions: croghanm@gmail.com or 919-835-4378.
Looking forward to seeing you!!

RENEW YOUR RAFA MEMBERSHIP
All RAFA memberships expired the end of June. It's time to renew your membership for the 2010-2011 season. You should have received a RAFA brochure in the mail recently. You can use the membership form included in that brochure or simply download the form.
Through RAFA, local flutists have the opportunity to hear and learn from three world-class artists each season. This year we feature flutist Kate Steinbeck and flutemaker Chris Abell (Sept 26 -- see above), Aralee Dorough (Flute Fair, Nov 13), and Broadway flutist Dave Weiss (April 17). We look forward to seeing you at one or more of these exciting events!
As you fill out the membership application, we encourage you to especially consider: 1) A tax-deductible donation. Your financial support of RAFA allows us to continue to plan high-quality events featuring world class artists. 2) A commitment to volunteer in at least one category. RAFA relies solely on volunteer efforts. Since RAFA has no paid staff, we need everyone to make our events run smoothly! Please consider how you might be able to help. Perhaps you could staff the registration table at an event, offer to be a room monitor at the Flute Fair or Solo Fest, provide refreshments, take photos, or write an article for the newsletter. Thanks for being involved! |

Inspiration from the Wizard of Oz
- musings from Ann Pearce, Raleigh flutist, composer, and RAFA board member As performing musicians, we might be inspired by remembering the three pivotal characters in the Wizard of Oz. In that frame of mind, let us conclude that they found the qualities they were searching. First of all, as we consider the scarecrow, we have "found" our brain and utilize its capacities to learn our instrument and to prepare our music the best we possibly can. Secondly, we might emulate the lion as we call upon our confidence-boosting courage as we share our music with others. Then lastly, we may call upon the tin man within us as we use our heart to interpret what the composer has provided. Our heart also makes it possible for us to forgive errors, thus freeing ourselves to optimize completing our performance. If we use all three: our brain, our courage, and our heart, our music will soar between us and our audience to the fullest extent possible, making the world a better place for all.
