Winner!
Lois Allen Flute Award
Amy Zhang, 14-year-old flute student of Julie Frederick and freshman at Cary High School, has won the Lois Allen Flute Award competition sponsored by the Raleigh Area Flute Association. RAFA received the flute from a donor who requested that it go to a deserving student in memory of his wife, who played this flute. A number of excellent students submitted applications; the evaluation process was difficult, as the committee members wished they could award flutes to all applicants. Although Amy began playing flute when she was ten years old, she has had private lessons only for the past two years. She plays in the Cary High School marching and concert bands, was in Middle School All-District and All-County Bands, and attended summer camp at UNC-Greensboro. In addition, Amy has participated in the RAFA Review and Contest and in Solofest. Amy has progressed rapidly in her flute study despite having had to use an instrument whose lesser quality presents many challenges. Ms. Frederick states that when the opportunity of the Lois Allen Flute Award presented itself, she saw this opportunity "...as a God-send" for Amy. Amy feels that this new flute will help her make the high school level of All-District and All-State Bands. When asked about being the recipient of the Lois Allen Flute Award, Amy replied, "I am really, really happy!" We look forward to hearing Amy play her new flute at the RAFA Members' Recital on May 16th.

What you say to yourself and how you say it has a strong impact on your ability to achieve your goals. Learn how and why positive thinking is such a powerful tool for making changes or creating concentration and relaxation. Understand a clear process for creating specific positive thoughts, called affirmations, that have meaning for you and your needs, and learn when and how to use them for maximum effectiveness to attain focus, persist in practice, work more smoothly with colleagues, or enhance performance in high pressure situations. The class will be taught by Helen Spielman, performance anxiety coach and RAFA member. |
Second Winds An opportunity for adult amateur flutists
Are you an Adult Amateur Flutist? Then join the Second Winds at their next meeting on Sunday, March 14, 2010 in the parlor at St. Philip Church, 7304 Falls of the Neuse Road, just across from the Ravenscroft soccer field. We encompass all levels of playing, from beginners on up. Play something for us if you want to (absolutely NOT necessary) -- you will love our non-threatening performance atmosphere. In any case, bring your flute, as we do some group playing.
It's all for fun!
