RAFA Nominations for 2009-10
The
Nominating Committee is preparing a slate of officers and board members for
RAFA's 2009-2010 season. Most positions
are for a one-year term. We are
especially in need of persons to assist with newsletter layout/graphics (using
Constant Contact) and website design and maintenance. Other open positions to consider are Vice-President, Corresponding
Secretary and Member-at-large.
If you
are interested in joining our wonderful board of enthusiastic organizers,
please contact Tammy Schmidt by April 25 at (919) 326-9329 or schmidtt@gcs.k12.nc.us. The final slate will be
published in next month's Tune In and
voted upon at the RAFA Members' Recital on May 17.

Galway slated for NFA Convention
The
National Flute Association's annual convention is coming to New York City this summer, August 13-16. Sir
James Galway will be the featured 2009 Lifetime
Achievement Award recipient, which will be presented at the annual Gala Dinner on Saturday night, August 15. Galway will also perform, teach, and oversee a workshop
for ages 8-17 and adult amateurs. In addition, he will lead an attempt to break the world record for the largest flute ensemble! Other convention
highlights include a Telemann-a-thon with almost six consecutive hours of every
duet Telemann ever wrote for the flute
and a late-night reading of a Tallis Motet for 40 flutes. The best of the
standards will return, of course, including competitions, flute choirs,
performance health workshops, the ever-popular pedagogy sessions, and concerts
and recitals galore. Pre-register now!

Three Wins in Three Weeks!!! by Helen Spielman
Former RAFA member Martha Long won two Young Artist
Competitions less than a month apart. On March 6, 2009
Martha took first place in the Mid-South Young Artist Competition near Nashville, Tennessee.
Three weeks later, on March 29, she won the Pittsburgh Flute Club
Young Artist Concerto Competition, which in addition to a cash
prize, gives her the honor to perform the Griffes Poem with orchestra on
May 16. As if that weren't enough, on March 17 in between those
two victories, Martha achieved second place in the Young
Musicians Foundation Debut Orchestra Concerto Competition in Los Angeles.
Martha's earliest flute teacher was Anna Ludwig Wilson in Durham. When Martha's family moved to Chapel Hill,
she began to study with Helen Spielman, in whose studio she remained for seven
years until graduating from Chapel
Hill High School.
During the last year and a half of high school, Martha took lessons concurrently with
Brooks de Wetter-Smith and Helen Spielman to prepare for college
auditions.
Martha was an active RAFA member, participating in the
Silver Winds flute choir for two years during middle school, entering
the Review and Contest in which she received an honorable mention,
and performing in Keith Underwood's masterclass when she was a
senior. She enthusiastically attended as many RAFA Flute Fairs and
events as possible.
Martha attended Oberlin College Conservatory for two years
and then transferred to The Colburn School in Los Angeles (affectionately called "the Julliard of the West"), where she is
currently a student of Jim Walker. She
is principal flute of the Young Musicians Debut
Orchestra and second flute of the American Youth Symphony,
and plays in The Colburn
School Orchestra. She has performed under the baton of Pinchas
Zuckerman, Leon
Fleisher, Sir Neville Mariner, James Conlin, Robert Stano, Jamie Laredo, Keith Lockhart, and
others.
Martha has spent her summers at the Bowdoin International
Music Festival, Brevard
Music Center,
Eastern Music Festival, and has been selected to play with the New York String Orchestra
Seminar, a prestigious ensemble that performs at Carnegie Hall.
This summer, Martha is looking forward to attending the Music Academy of the West in Santa
Barbara, California,
as well as taking a vacation in Alaska
with her boyfriend. Next year she plans
to audition for graduate school to pursue her Artist Diploma
in Flute Performance. Martha
practices yoga and has a special fondness for elephants.
