Exciting News...
...and a request from two
flutist friends! Durham flutist and RAFA
member Joanna Sisk-Purvis and RAFA's 2005 guest artist Rhonda Larson have each entered
a composition in a competition sponsored by Indaba Music to create a remix of
"Dona Nobis Pacem" with renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma. The winner will have the opportunity to
record with Yo-Yo Ma in a special one-on-one collaboration!
Over 450 entries have been submitted,
and now the entries are being voted upon by the Indaba community and YOU! Currently, both Joanna and Rhonda's entries
are in the top 20! Help one of them
reach the #1 spot by voting for them before the January 10 midnight deadline. Only 4 voting days remain!
Joanna writes, "While on vacation, I found out through NPR
about a contest at Indaba Music to create a remix with cellist Yo-Yo Ma. I made
do with the materials I had--my laptop and a bunch of toy instruments--and got
in an entry just under the deadline. To my complete surprise, I've been in the
top 25 of about 450 entries since the voting opened. If you have a chance, I'd
love for you to listen to my track, and vote for it if you like it."

Rhonda writes, "While my husband worked hours on end to
clean out our flooded basement, I worked hours on end to finish my entry by the
Dec. 31 deadline. Also during this time,
I was heart-stricken by the escalating troubles happening in the Middle
East, going from bad to worse. As many of you know, I spent
2006-2007 living there, teaching music to children at a wonderful music
conservatory, so I experienced the situation first-hand. Back in the studio,
working on the music for the Yo-Yo Ma competition, I could not think of a
better melody to be playing: "Dona Nobis Pacem" (Give us Peace). I
tell you, I played it on my flute like playing a genuine prayer out into the
world!"
