Review & Contest
Registration Due Soon

RAFA's 23rd annual Review & Contest will be held the afternoon of Sunday, November 4 at Highland United Methodist Church in Raleigh. The event is open to students (elementary through university) and adults (Review only). Last year 125 flutists participated, with a total of $2500 being awarded to the selected winners. This is an excellent opportunity to set goals, reach new challenges, and receive valuable performance feedback!

Registration is due October 1. Registration form, rules and music list are all available online. Contest winners perform in a recital Friday evening, November 9 at 7:30 pm.  Direct questions to contest coordinator Lauren Robbins-Pollack at (919) 557-2272 or density21.5@earthlink.net.

Helen Spielman's students took part in a variety of music activities this summer. Mara Gabriel, Mindy Yuan and Helen Spielman attended Wildacres Flute Retreat in Little Switzerland (NC), where Helen also presented the workshop Performance Anxiety from Inside Out. Helen presented sessions of this highly-beneficial workshop at Szymanski Voice Studios, UNCWellnessCenter, and NFA Convention in Albuquerque. Claire Johnson attended Interlochen Summer Arts Camp (Michigan) and joined Mary Auen, Claire Johnson and Helen Spielman in attending James Galway's concert at Eastern Music Festival. Mary Auen participated in Asheville Flute Vacation. Mindy Yuan participated in Mid-Atlantic Band Camp. Donna Prather enjoyed participation in Maureen Kelly's flute choir.

Martha Long presented a recital in Chapel Hill and eagerly prepared to begin studies this fall with Jim Walker at USC in Los Angeles (CA).

Rosene Rohrer and students Ami Allgeier, Johanna Albrecht and Sarah Cooper presented a recital of flute quartet music at Borders Books in Raleigh.

NFA Convention

The annual National Flute Association (NFA) Convention in Albuquerque (NM) was a highlight for many RAFA members. We're especially proud of the RAFA flutists who were featured as convention artists and workshop presenters. Tom Mease and Ann Pearce performed in the Fiesta Flute Orchestra, Christine Gustafson performed in a recital honoring her former teacher Karl Kraber, Ann Pearce participated in a panel discussion on flute club financial matters, Helen Spielman presented a performance anxiety workshop, and Tunisia Bullock and Beth Kupsco helped staff the ALRY exhibit booth.  Kudos to Raleigh native Kelly Nivison, graduate of Enloe High School and ASU, who was selected as a semi-finalist in the Baroque Flute Competition (see next item). Kelly is a second year master's student in flute performance at Florida State University. Congratulations also to Ann Pearce, whose compositions were featured in several flute choir concerts. Other RAFA members seen at the convention were Mary Boone, Linda Cykert, Mara Gabriel, Catherine LeGrand, Martha Long, Rosene Rohrer, Mark & Judith Thomas, and Nancy Schneeloch-Bingham.

Mark your calendars now for next year's convention to be held August 7-10, 2008 in Kansas City, MO.

Kelly-Baroque Competition at NFAKelly Nivison, semi-finalist in the
NFA Convention's Baroque Flute Competition!!

Kelly submitted audition tapes last March and learned in May that she was one of just nine flutists to make it to the semifinals. "I literally jumped out of my chair when I read the email that I was selected as a semifinalist!" Kelly writes.

Ms. Nivison spent the summer preparing, which was made especially challenging because her flute professor at FSU was out of the country. However, she was able to work with Les Roettges, principal for the Jacksonville Symphony as well as lessons with traverso specialists Barbara Kallaur of Indiana University's Early Music Institute as well as Chris Kruegger, who teaches at UMass, NEC, and Boston College of Fine Arts.  Kelly says, "I learned so much from the two short lessons with traverso players, and I am eager to learn more.  There is so much I yet do not know - the traverso really is a completely different instrument than the modern Boehm flute."

"Must Read" for Teachers

All previous books written for music teachers "pale" in comparison to Bonnie Blanchard's new book "Making Music and Enriching Lives: A Guide for All Music Teachers."  Co-authored with her sister Cynthia Blanchard Acree, an award-winning non-fiction writer, this 300+ page book is published by Indiana University Press and is available from Carolyn Nussbaum Music and Amazon.com.
