The Call to the Journey
I am often up around 5am and either at my desk writing or in my art studio. Many mornings I am witness to the blazing dawn piercing the blackness of the trees before me. Yesterday I contemplated how dawn is the harbinger of the unknown every day. No matter what we have planned or think is going to happen any given day, we never really know anything. Any day can be the day when something unusual or extraordinary happens that launches us on a life-changing journey that we never could have imagined. This is the archetypal Call to Adventure, as mythologist Joseph Campbell described it in his book The Hero with a Thousand Faces (1949). It comes whether we ask for it or not, whether we want it or not. It's written into our DNA and our soul's entelechy toward wholeness.
The Call is the harbinger of our next step in the evolution of consciousness and a portal to becoming a truly embodied, awake, human being. When the Mystery sends us a Call to Adventure, it may arrive as a violent wind blowing open the locked doors of our lives and scattering everything everywhere. All that has been carefully placed and seemingly secure is suddenly in chaos. The ground under us shakes and cracks and life as it was is in upheaval. The Call can also arrive on quiet kitty paws, as a barely discernible whisper, as an impulse, a smile across a room, a quickening of some sort, a burning longing that smolders and finally combusts into a new life unfolding. The result is no less powerful, discombobulating, or profound. Since there is no separation between inner and outer events, the Call can appear as either and is both. However the Call shows up, we are invited, often required, to meet what is happening without escape. How do we do that? Our first response, a natural human one, may be "No!" and we may try to escape, bargain, and resist, and the ultimate inevitability of what is unfolding is stronger than all of our egoic struggles to fight it. We can begin by being willing to be willing until the true surrender and opening happen. We cannot make it happen, it happens when it does, however it does--by Grace.
The Call heralds a period of profound transformation, an ending and a beginning all at once. It can throw us into chaos, fear, excitement, grief, anticipation, all kinds of emotional states, and it can awaken us to our awakeness, show us the truth of what is. I have found that if the Call and the journey that ensues are recognized for what they are, there is a spaciousness that opens allowing an easing of the grip of fear and the alchemy of awareness can take over. The egoic mind can relax a bit as changes unfold. Joseph Campbell recognized a consistent pattern in the structure of the heroic journey in mythologies all over the world, and saw that this pattern is consistent with our own contemporary life journeys. I read The Hero with a Thousand Faces (1949) in1980, when I was 32 years old. I fell in love with this paradigm, as I love patterns and structures, around the same time I became immersed in my studies and personal engagement with the work of Carl Jung on archetypes (universal patterns of experience), the collective unconscious, dreams, and the Feminine. My mythic eye opened back then and I continue to see life and its happenings, including collective events, through the lens of the archetypal journey. The first, and probably the most radical, life-transforming Call of my adult life came in 1982. It announced itself as a series of archetypal dreams interwoven with a series of extraordinary experiences. One day, a divine presence of ineffable love swept into my office during a session like a soft, palpable breeze. Both my client and I felt the numinous presence. A week or so later, I had a Big Dream, in the language of Jungian analysis, in which I was told by an old shaman to "Carry the fire but don't get burned." My analyst called it an initiation dream, and I could not have imagined what it was pointing to or what it really meant for me.

So, is today or tomorrow the day that you will be called to an Adventure? What have been the Calls you have experienced in your life that opened you to a journey?
With deep love and gratitude, Sheila

What Is Sacred Feminine Initiation?
Even though i have been consciously engaged in Sacred Feminine initiation since 1980, the short answer to this question is that it is the Mystery unfolding, i.e., I don't really know what it is. I can't know what the Mystery is. I can only experience it. Sacred Feminine Initiation is such an intimate encounter and conversation with the Mystery, the Divine Mother, the Kundalini Shakti, that it cannot really be put into words. This probably accounts for all the secrecy about initiation rites. We can say what we do but that does not even get near what actually happens. While there are experiences and patterns that seem to be common to all of us on this path, the sights, sounds, colors and flavors of each woman's experiences are unique.
I can more easily speak about what initiation does and how it unfolds. I had the following dream in the early days of my investigation of the Feminine.

God/dess wants to be born in the flame of a wo/man's consciousness, leaping ever higher. And what if this has no roots in the earth? If it is not a house of stone where the fire of God/dess can dwell, but a wretched straw hut that flares up and vanishes? Could God then be born? One must be able to suffer God/dess. ~C.G. Jung
P.S. Sacred Feminine Initiation follows the path of the Mythic Journey at a structural level...check out the abbreviated stages on this page.
