Diabetes Report Card 2012 

The Division of Diabetes Translation of the CDC recently released a new publication, Diabetes Report Card 2012. The report uses data from 2010 to present, highlighting a profile of diabetes and its complications at the national and state level. It also includes information about prediabetes awareness, diabetes outcomes, and risk factors. Read the full report here.

New CDC Sodium Resources

The CDC's Division for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention has released a new guide on strategies for sodium reduction in worksites. The factsheet provides information on educating employees, developing food policies, and establishing a worksite wellness team. These and other sodium reduction resources are available here.

AJPM Online Competition: Childhood Obesity Challenge

The American Journal of Preventive Medicine (AJPM) is holding an online competition open to all innovators with solutions for one of the biggest public health challenges of our time, childhood obesity. The Challenge is open to individuals or teams from any sector, and presents an outlet for innovative solutions to childhood obesity that are outside the standard framework of scientific research publications. Winners will receive a cash prize and will be featured in the print and online editions of AJPM. For more details, click here.

American Cancer Society RFA for CBPR Grants

The Midwest Division of the American Cancer Society, in collaboration with its National Home Office in Atlanta, is pleased to announce a request for applications (RFA) for community-based participatory research (CBPR) projects focused on reducing the cancer disparities found in vulnerable and medically underserved populations across the entire cancer continuum. Researchers located in Iowa, Minnesota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin are invited to apply. The application deadline is October 15. Click here to apply

Pro Walk/Pro BikeŽ 2012

The National Center for Bicycling & Walking, a program of Project for Public Spaces, will host the 17th Pro Walk/Pro Bike conference in Long Beach, CA, on September 10-13, 2012. More than 1,000 planners, engineers, health professionals, and advocates will convene to learn how to successfully work with transportation professionals, advocates, and others to create more active, healthy places.The conference includes more than 100 panel sessions, poster presentations, and mobile workshops. Chronic Disease Prevention Toolkit

 

This edition's featured tool is the

Healthy Vending Machine Project Fact Sheet. The Alabama Healthy Vending Machine Project is a collaboration between the Alabama Department of Public Health and the Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services to provide healthier options in vending machines in state agencies. The goal of the project is to increase access to healthy foods and beverages and reduce or eliminate the availability of calorie dense, nutrient poor foods in public service venues. 

 

NACCHO's Chronic Disease Prevention Project has collaborated with national organizations and the CDC's National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion in an effort to connect local and state public health practitioners with publications, tools, and other resources related to chronic disease prevention and health promotion.
