Celebrating Partnerships & Progress: The First Year of the National Prevention Strategy (Webinar)

The goal of achieving better health has ignited a call to action across the country, from promoting healthy behaviors to creating environments that make it easier to exercise and access healthy foods. State and local health agencies have an opportunity to strengthen prevention efforts by incorporating health in policymaking and creating conditions for health in their communities. Marking the first anniversary of the National Prevention Strategy, this webinar will discuss the work of the National Prevention Council and showcase multi-sector collaboration at the state and local levels, where private and public partnerships drive and reinforce options for improving health outcomes. The webinar will be held Wednesday, July 18, from 2-3:30 PM EDT. Register here

Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance--United States, 2011

Health Impact Assessment: Nutrition Standards for Snacks and Beverages Sold in Schools

The Pew Charitable Trusts and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation recently released a health impact assessment study on nutrition standards for snacks and beverages sold in schools. The study found that strong nutrition standards could have a significant positive impact on the health of students, with potentially increased benefits to those populations that are most vulnerable. In addition, if implemented effectively at the district and school levels, the changes can be made with little to no negative financial impact, and may even result in improved financial outcomes for schools and districts. Read the study here.

Report: Smoking in Low Socioeconomic Status Populations

The Break Free Alliance's new report, Smoking in Low Socioeconomic Status Populations: Prevalence, Health Impact, Challenges and Recommendations, outlines smoking behaviors and health impacts in various low socioeconomic status population segments, including the HIV/AIDS community, the homeless, incarcerated populations, disabled persons, and more. R2R Cyber Seminar Archived

The National Cancer Institute recently released the archive for the cyber seminar NACCHO co-hosted: "Bridging Local and State Cancer Control Efforts." The seminar featured examples of successful comprehensive cancer control coalitions currently using evidence-based public health practice to implement state cancer plans in local jurisdictions. Both state and local health department perspectives were explored as Bruce Behringer from the Tennessee Department of Health and Della Rhoades from Noda County Health Department in Missouri shared their stories of success, lessons learned, and opportunities. The archived seminar can be found here.

Chronic Disease Prevention Toolkit

This edition's featured tool is the

Healthy Vending Machine Project Fact Sheet. The Alabama Healthy Vending Machine Project is a collaboration between the Alabama Department of Public Health and the Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services to provide healthier options in vending machines in state agencies. The goal of the project is to increase access to healthy foods and beverages and reduce or eliminate the availability of calorie dense, nutrient poor foods in public service venues.

NACCHO's Chronic Disease Prevention Project has collaborated with national organizations and the CDC's National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion in an effort to connect local and state public health practitioners with publications, tools, and other resources related to chronic disease prevention and health promotion.

NACCHO welcomes any tools or resources you would like to share with local health departments. To submit a tool to the Chronic Disease Prevention Toolkit, please contact Kelly Dawson.
