NACCHO Webinar: Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act Implementation Update
In June 2009, President Obama signed into law the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act. Over two years later, provisions of this law are still going into effect and there remain many questions and legal battles over the implementation of different parts of the Act. Join legal experts from the Tobacco Control Legal Consortium and staff from the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids as they share the latest happenings related to policy, regulation and implementation of the Act. Presenters will highlight the important role public health professionals can play in encouraging the FDA to adopt strong regulations. The webinar will be held Jan. 31, 2012 from 1-2:30 PM EST. Click here to register.

DHPE Applications for School Employee Wellness Awards Program
The Directors of Health Promotion and Education (DHPE) is now accepting applications for the 2011-2012 School Employee Wellness Awards Program. The award was created to recognize schools and school districts that demonstrate commitment to the health of their employees by implementing school employee wellness programs. The program includes three different levels of awards to be reinvested in their employee wellness programs. Applications are due Feb. 15.

Medicare Coverage for Preventive Services to Reduce Obesity
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) recently announced that Medicare is adding coverage for obesity screening and counseling services. According to CMS, over 30 percent of Medicare enrollees are estimated to be obese. This adds to Medicare's existing portfolio of preventive services that are now available without cost sharing under the Affordable Care Act. Read the announcement here.

Chronic Disease Prevention Toolkit

This edition's featured tool is Health Impact Assessment: A Guide For Practice. Health impact assessment (HIA) is an emerging practice that aims to bring a greater understanding of human health consequences to public policy and decision-making. The awareness and use of HIA in the United States is rapidly increasing, and this guide aims to support practitioners in the field by describing the key tasks and activities for HIA, as well as the issues and challenges that arise in the course of practice. The guide includes illustrative examples from practice, as well as suggestions for stakeholder participation and the integration of health analysis in the environmental impact assessment process.

NACCHO's Chronic Disease Prevention Project has collaborated with national organizations and the CDC's National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion in an effort to connect local and state public health practitioners with publications, tools, and other resources related to chronic disease prevention and health promotion.

NACCHO welcomes any tools or resources you would like to share with local health departments. To submit a tool to the Chronic Disease Prevention Toolkit, please contact Kelly Dawson.
