New Issue Brief: Overview of Comprehensive Tobacco Control Strategies
NACCHO has recently released this issue brief, which discusses the five components of a comprehensive tobacco control program and provides examples of how LHDs have practiced effective tobacco control strategies. The brief describes each of the five components in detail (community interventions; health communication interventions; cessation interventions; program administration and management; and surveillance and evaluation) and illustrates them with an LHD success story.

FDA Planning Five-Year Multimedia Tobacco Education Campaigns
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is planning to spend $600 million over five years on multimedia tobacco education campaigns, designed to reduce death and disease caused by tobacco. Declines in smoking rates have stalled in recent years; these campaigns will target specific populations--such as youth, minorities, the military, and people with disabilities--in an effort to reduce tobacco use.

Judge Blocks FDA Graphic Warning Labels A federal judge granted a temporary injunction, blocking a rule that would have required tobacco companies to display graphic images of smoking's negative health consequences on the grounds that such a rule violates tobacco companies' rights to free speech. The Obama administration is appealing the ruling.

Public Smoking Bans May Spill Over to Households
According to a study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, smoking bans in public places tend to reduce rates of smoking in private homes as well. This spillover effect can serve as one justification for enacting smoke-free legislation. Read more.
