New Diabetes and Tobacco Research Briefs
NACCHO is pleased to announce the release of two research briefs that highlight findings from the 2010 National Profile of Local Health Departments: Diabetes Prevention and Control and Tobacco Prevention and Control. The Profile study surveyed local health departments (LHDs) across the nation to provide a comprehensive picture of LHD structures, workforce, financing, governance, activities, and services. These research briefs are valuable resources for local and state programmatic staff, national partners, policymakers, and researchers interested in diabetes prevention and control and tobacco prevention and control at the local level.

Eat Local Foods Act
The "Eat Local Foods Act", proposed by Representative Chellie Pingree (D-ME), supports grants that allow schools to serve locally and regionally grown food within the school breakfast and lunch programs. She states that the legislation would combat childhood obesity in schools, teach kids healthy eating habits, and support local farmers. Read the bill online (search for bill number H.R. 1722).

The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act: What You Need to Know (Webinar) Join Public Health Law and Policy for a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation-sponsored webinar on the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act on Thursday, Nov. 10, at 1 PM EST. An expert panel will discuss how to work effectively with state Child Nutrition Programs and partnering with local partners like school boards, PTAs, and school health councils to get healthier food into schools.

Evaluation of the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program: Interim Report
The USDA Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) released an interim report detailing the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP) results from the 2011-2012 school year. FFVP targets schools in low-income communities where children have the lowest intakes of fruits and vegetables. The report indicates that a 15 percent increase in consumption of fruits and vegetables occurred in schools participating in FFVP, compared to non-participant schools. Additionally, FFVP demonstrated significant impact on children with low socio-economic status.

Chronic Disease Prevention Toolkit
 This edition's featured tool is Under Pressure: Sodium Reduction in the School Environment. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has developed this guide with a comprehensive list of strategies to reduce sodium in the school setting. NACCHO's Chronic Disease Prevention Project has collaborated with national organizations and the CDC's National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion in an effort to connect local and state public health practitioners with publications, tools, and other resources related to chronic disease prevention and health promotion.
