MMWR: State Preemption of Local Tobacco Control Policies

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently published a Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) on August 26 entitled, "State Preemption of Local Tobacco Control Policies Restricting Smoking, Advertising, and Youth Access--United States, 2000-2010." This report found that no progress was achieved in reducing the number of states that have legislation which preempts tougher restrictions on tobacco advertising and youth access in the last decade.

Report: States Falling Short on Laws that Prevent Cancer

According to "How Do You Measure Up?: A Progress Report on State Legislative Activity to Reduce Cancer Incidence and Mortality," from the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN), the majority of states have been missing out on opportunities to enact laws and policies that could reduce the impact of cancer. Read the ACS CAN news release for more information.

Legacy Community Activist Award
Nominate your colleague for the 2011 Community Activist Award for their outstanding contribution to tobacco prevention and cessation at the community level. The award is presented to a leader in the community with experience spearheading innovative and influential tobacco control projects, especially those that reflect Legacy's mission to build a world where young people reject tobacco and anyone can quit. The winner will receive an honorarium of $2,500 and recognition through press releases and Legacy publications. The deadline to submit a nomination is September 16, 2011.
Tobacco Pricing Strategies Toolkit
In July 2011, the Tobacco Technical Assistance Consortium (TTAC) updated its tobacco pricing strategies toolkit, Addressing Tobacco Pricing Policies: A Toolkit for Tobacco Control Program Managers. Users can explore resources from successful state campaigns, download a print-friendly version of the toolkit, and access updated tobacco pricing data.
ATTACK Toolkit
The ATTACK Toolkit, from the ATTACK Project, is a resource for tobacco control advocates working with young adults on tobacco issues. Visit the ATTACK website to learn more. There will also be a free webinar on September 7, 2011 from 1-2 PM ET to discuss the toolkit and social branding.
NACCHO's MCAH Sentinel Network
NACCHO is currently undertaking a multi-year project to strengthen local health department (LHD) Maternal, Child, and Adolescent Health (MCAH) programs. As part of this project, NACCHO is creating a Sentinel Network to further increase its understanding of local MCAH and would like to invite you to participate. LHD staff members who are working to improve health outcomes for MCAH populations are eligible to participate in the Sentinel Network. The deadline to register online  is September 20, 2011. Please email mch@naccho.org if you have any questions about the MCAH Sentinel Network.
