Free Scarecrow-Making Workshop

All ages are welcome; an adult must accompany children under 15. Just call the Center at 845-2787 to sign up for either the 9:30-11 or the 1:30-3 session.

Two winners from last year's community scarecrow contest, Dawn Everette and Kelly Lenius, will be leading the workshops.

Wooden scarecrow frames will be provided along with straw to stuff the scarecrows. Workshop participants are invited to bring their idea for their scarecrow, along with clothes and other accessories to make their scarecrow, but the Center will have a limited supply of clothing and art supplies for decorating.

Thanks to the area businesses and organizations which donated the supplies to make it possible for the Center to offer this workshop for free.  Marcia Hanson and Cherry Hill Farm donated straw, and St. Simon's Thrift Shop and the Salvation Army donated clothes.

The scarecrow-making workshop is being in held in conjunction with the community wide scarecrow contest sponsored by the Ludington Area Convention & Visitors Bureau and the Ludington Daily News.  To register for the contest, email Julie Payment at the Daily News by by September 27.

The contrast between surreal photography and photorealistic painting is on view in the exhibition, Beyond Real, featuring the photography of Gale Nobes and the paintings of Adam Tetzlaff.

The exhibition may be viewed during the Center's business hours, which are Tuesday-Saturday, 12-5:30 p.m.

Academy Award-Winning Japanese Film, Departures

The film series at the Center begins four months of foreign films with the Japanese film, Departures screening on Friday, September 24 at 7 p.m.


Winner of the 2009 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, Departures is the story of a young man who answers a classified ad entitled, "Departures," thinking it is for a job at a travel agency only to discover that the job is actually for a funeral home.

The film follows his profound and sometimes comical journey with death as he uncovers the wonder, joy and meaning of life and living.

In addition to the Academy Award, Departures won the Japan Academy Prize for Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, and six other "Best" Japans Academy Prize awards.

The film, which has English subtitles, is rated PG13 and has a running time of 131 minutes.

Tickets for each film screening are $7 per person at the door.  Popcorn and beverages will be available for purchase.
