"Relics of Days Past" -- Painting by Yvonne Carlson |
The new gift shop at the Ludington Area Center
for the Arts is featuring two artists for September: Yvonne Carlson, a
Ludington-based painter, whose landscapes have been beloved for decades and
Terry Wickart, a metalwork artist from Holland, MI.
The new gift shop
showcases paintings, sculpture, ceramics, photographs and many hand-made craft
items from the Mason County area and beyond.
Yvonne Carlson's work in
acrylic is strongly influenced by the natural beauty of her native
Michigan. The sweeping dunes,
quiet woodlands, the ever-changing and always fascinating waters of the Great
Lakes have provided her with a continuing source of inspiration. A lifelong resident of Ludington, she
studied at West Shore Community College and with various private
instructors. She has exhibited in
juried and invitational shows throughout the Great Lakes region, winning
numerous awards. Her work is
represented in public and private collections in North and South America,
Scandinavia, Europe and the Middle East and Australia.
For 40 years, Terry Wickart has been an artist and graphic
designer. After Sculptures by Terry Wickart | attending
Valparaiso University in Indiana as an art major, he studied at the American
Academy of Art in Chicago. His
paintings have been included in over forty national and international
watercolor exhibitions, and have won awards from shows across the United
States. For the last seven years,
Wickart's artistic pursuits have been entirely focused on metal sculpture, both
welded and forged. His work consists of sculptures on a personal scale. garden
art, commissioned pieces, specialty projects and signs.

"Beyond Real" Photographs by Gale Nobes and Paintings by Adam Tetzlaff Exhibition Runs Through October 2
"Palm" - Painting by Adam Tetzlaff | The contrast between surreal photography and photorealistic
painting is on view in the exhibition, Beyond Real, featuring the photography of Gale
Nobes and the paintings of Adam Tetzlaff.
"We selected these artists to show together because they each begin with
the world we know, but in different ways take their images into other
realms that suggests more. What that 'more' is, the viewer is left to
decipher," explains Rebecca Mott chair of the Center's Visual Arts
Committee.
"Evening River" - Photograph by Gale Nobes | Gale Nobes is a Muskegon-based photographer who has exhibited in solo and group
shows extensively in West Michigan, as well as in other parts of the state. Working digitally in the infrared spectrum, Nobes illuminates the beauty of his subjects in a way that
both captures and surpasses reality. He was the first place winner in
two statewide photo competitions held at the Newaygo County Council for the
Arts Artsplace in Fremont. His
other awards include the Patrick J. O'Leary Purchase Award at the Muskegon
Museum of Art's 2008 West Michigan Regional Show and the Bill Pieri Photography
Award at the 2009 Festival of the Arts in Grand Rapids.
Adam Tetzlaff, who
resides in Lowell, creates intriguing contradictions. His landscapes can seem monumental but are painted on small canvases. He uses paint, but the
resulting images have the clarity of a photograph. His subjects are modern, but
often have historic references. Tetzlaff has exhibited in galleries and museums in West Michigan. In addition to awards at juried
regional exhibitions, Tetzlaff was included in a group exhibition, 4 Under
40: Emerging Artists of West Michigan at the Grand Rapids Art Museum in 2005.
The exhibition may be viewed during the Center's business hours, which are
Tuesday-Saturday, 12-5:30 p.m. |
