The Ludington Show Opening Reception Friday, August 13, 6-8 p.m.
Portrait of Todd and Brad Reed | Emily Crowley, a Ludington native and student at the College
for Creative Studies in Detroit, is giving something unique back to the
community she grew up in: portraits of ten influential citizens, selected by the artist, who help make Ludington a special place.
The oil portraits will be on display
from August 13-29 in the gallery of the Ludington Area Center for the
Arts. The public is invited to an
opening reception on Friday, August 13 from 6-8 p.m.
Crowley was looking for a thesis project that would allow her to combine what she had been taught in art school with her growing realization that her hometown is a special community. Through "The Ludington Show," Crowley found that project.
"I started with a portrait of Ludington's mayor, John Henderson. From there, I talked to a lot of people and even solicited suggestions through a newspaper article," explained Crowley. "I selected a group of people for The Ludington Show who
collectively showcase part of what makes our community worth being part of. A common thread I noticed is that
they do what they do out of a sincere interest in improving the community for
everyone."
In addition to John Henderson, The Ludington Show features portraits of photographers Todd and Brad Reed; Dr. Bill Anderson, historian, writer, and former head of the Michigan Department of History, Arts and Libraries; business and philanthropic leaders, Bob Neal,
Milan "Budde" Reed, and Lee and Joan Schoenherr; and Bill and Jane Carpenter,
owners of a local B&B, who were instrumental in the creation and growth of
the Ludington Area Arts Council and the Center for the Arts.
Crowley is giving back to her
community in another way as well; she is volunteering at the Center for the
Arts in exchange for studio space for the summer. After she graduates from art school in June 2011, Crowley plans to pursue a career as an illustrator and portrait artist.
The Ludington Show exhibition is
sponsored by The Artists Market, which provided Crowley with discounted art
supplies and suggested she contact the Center for the Arts as a venue for the
exhibition. The Artists Market is
a gallery, framer, and art supply store in downtown Ludington.
