Barn Red Film Screening in Conjunction with Barns & Byways Tour This Saturday, October 10

Barn RedFollowing the Barns and Byways tour on Saturday, the Ludington Area Center for the Arts will screen the film, Barn Red, starring Ernest Borgnine and written and directed by Traverse-City filmmaker, Rich Brauer.  The film screens at 7:00 pm and admission is $5 at the door.

Barn Red tells the story of a Northern Michigan farmer, Michael Bolini, played by Ernest Borgnine, who lives alone on his precious 240-acre fruit farm, when bad news comes. It turns out his recently deceased mother had never switched the title of the farm into his name, and now the IRS wants their share of inheritance tax, based on values pumped up by development potential.

Bolini doesn't have the money and isn't very interested in selling off any of his land to settle the debt.  A gung-ho developer has big plans and has already optioned nearby farms. He is hungry for more, and stands ready and willing to solve Bolini's problems.

What follows is a dramatic struggle for the land. The township, the developers and the landowners all fight for their slice of the pie. In the end, Bolini makes a tough personal decision, and the precious land is preserved.

Barn Red
was selected in 2004 to be included in the traveling Smithsonian exhibit "Barn Again." The film was screened in select communities all across Michigan as part of the Michigan Barn Preservation Network.
