Special Film Screening
Sunday, December 28 - 5:30 p.m.
Immortal Beloved
Plan to join us on the Sunday after Christmas for an evening with Bernard Rose, writer and director of the film
, "Immortal Beloved."

The film, which stars Gary Oldman and Isabella Rossellini, begins with the death of Ludwig van Beethoven.  His secretary and long-suffering friend, Anton Schindler starts the search for the person, "my immortal beloved," to whom Beethoven has left his goods, his works and his money.

In addition to the film screening and discussion with Bernard Rose, the Cartier Mansion will be providing cheese and crackers and desserts.  Tickets for this event are $10 at the door. Cartier Mansion will also be offering a cash bar with wine and beer.
Demolition Derby at the Center!
Demolition overview
On a recent Saturday in November eight or so guys cheerfully subjected themselves to splinters and sore muscles, spending a good 8-hour day ripping and hauling carpet and wood.  The job?  To dismantle the former altar and prepare to transform it into a stage that will be big enough to accommodate a 60-piece orchestra.  The front of the stage will extend out another two feet and the sides of that stage will be the full width of the performance hall.

The work is being done entirely by volunteers, with the only cost (besides the sore muscles) going toward the lumber and other materials.   The new stage should be completed by January.

Thanks to everyone who has helped out with this effort: volunteers John Bell, Mike Boyd, Craig Convissor (and his dog Oreo), Mike Lenich, Eliot Plummer, Marty Ziemba and board members Bill Carpenter, Rick Plummer, Ted Malt, Shirley Reeds, Kari Karr, and Kay Marble.

We are grateful to the Mason County Community Foundation which has provided the Ludington Area Arts Council with a $10,000 grant, which will be used for first phase of renovation for the Performance Hall;  materials to build the stage, electrical upgrades, and window treatments to darken the Hall.

Board members Ted Malt and Bill Carpenter (right) are still smiling even on their umpteenth trip to the dumpster.

Demolition 2

John Bell, Ted Malt, and Mike Lenich take a well-deserved break amid the demolition.

Happy Holidays!
Manistee historical - test Thanks to board member, Lisa Cooper, for creating an artful tree that glows on the second floor of the performance hall window this holiday season.
A World Traveller Finds a New Home in Ludington

Just as the people who have become active in the Center for the Arts have a story to tell, so it goes with the beautiful  Yamaha piano that has taken up residence at the Center.

Craig avery at the pianoCarol Lapham bought it at a military PX in Bangkok, Thailand in 1970.  She and her husband, Lew, were living there assisting the  U.S. ambassador.  It moved with them to Bethesda, Maryland in 1973.  When they retired in 1978, it traveled to a farm in Harrison, Maine and then to the city of Brunswick, Maine in 1986.  In 1994 it went to Tucson, Arizona for a change of climate.  In 1999 when
Carol moved back to Maine, the piano moved to Ludington when Carol's granddaughter, Carolyn, started taking piano lessons.

Carol, who has lived in many places around the world, moved to Ludington in 2007 to be with her son Doug and his wife Mary who are long time Ludington residents.  She has loved learning about the arts in all the countries she has lived in and was very excited to hear about the proposed Ludington Center for the Arts.

The piano has already been pressed into musical service.  Above, Craig Avery, a Grand Valley State music student, recently played the piano for a private party at the Center.

Thank you Carol for bringing this world traveller home to the new Center for the Arts.  We are honored and grateful for your generous donation.
Gimme, gimme....
Donation box
The Center for the Arts needed a donation box for the lobby and next thing you know, Scottville woodworker and artist, Craig Convissor created this arty and funky box for us.  Thanks Craig!  Check out Craig's other work on his new website.
