Upcoming Events
Movies on Wednesday nights at 7:00 p.m. in October - it's part of The Big Question, sponsored by West Shore Community College:
October 1 - Good Night and Good Luck - George Clooney's Oscar-nominated docudrama pits TV newsman Edward R. Murrow (David Strathairn) against Sen. Joseph McCarthy and his single-minded crusade to quell the red threat at home. Despite corporate pressure to back off, Murrow and his CBS staff are determined to examine the lies and fear tactics perpetrated by McCarthy during his Communist witch-hunts. The impressive cast includes Robert Downey Jr., Patricia Clarkson and Jeff Daniels.
October 8 - The Great Debaters- When African-American poet Mel Tolson (Denzel Washington, who also directs) creates a debate team at historically black Wiley College, he pushes the team to a level of excellence that allows them to challenge powerhouse Harvard in 1935. But despite public success, personal clashes foment as the father (Forest Whitaker) of one of Tolson's students resents his son's loyalty to his coach. Denzel Whitaker co-stars in this drama based on a true story.
October 22 - The Persuaders - PBS's long-running television series "Frontline" examines the inner workings of advertising and public relations and the men and women -- dubbed "persuaders" -- whose job it is to influence the buying habits of today's consumers. See how they research the preferences of shoppers, pique their interest, entice them to part with their hard-earned money, and get their own messages across in an increasingly complicated and tech-savvy world.
October 29 - Recount - This made-for-TV, Emmy-winning film chronicles the extraordinary behind-the-scenes drama that unfolded in the weeks following the highly controversial 2000 election -- a presidential race that further split an already divided America. With the country's leadership hanging in the balance after the closest vote in history, the battle between George W. Bush and Al Gore would come down a hotly contested vote count in Florida. Kevin Spacey and Laura Dern star.
On October 15, Rebecca Mott, Professor of Art at WSCC, delivers a lecture in conjunction with The Big Question, entitled: "Crafting
the Political Message: An Image Speaks a Thousand Words."
Also this month: October 11 - Book signing with local artist, Bert Petri. October 17 - The Write People present Dr. William Anderson and other local writers.

The Center's First Event Was a Hit
Well, we made it through our first official event at the Ludington Area Center for the Arts and by all accounts it was a hit!
Board members, Nancy Terryn and Shirley Reeds once again donated their time and creativity (both in buckets full!) gallery to transform the space into a bistro/cafe; we'd like to keep it that way for awhile in case we can get an open mic night going!
Board secretary, Janet Murray, and treasurer, Joyce Usiak, tracked the reservations and donations coming in. New volunteer, Marty Cupp came up with and donated red and white table decorations, complete with "polish" rocks -- you'll have to ask her about it. Board member, Kay Marble performed her usual (but way above average!) culinary artistry with help from program committee volunteers, Christine Reed-Fast and Craig Convissor. New volunteer, Erin Whitaker, lent us her culinary and commercial kitchen talents; not only did she prepare the periogis (provided at a nice discount from Northside Market), she provided the finishing touches on Kay's work and managed the kitchen (included a spotless clean-up) to perfection with help from many hours of help and dedication from program committee volunteers: Linda Phillips, Craig Convissor, Kris Campbell, and Diane Boulais.
Kay also has loaned the Center a cool buffet table and a wooden table; board member, Lisa Hotovy donated a coffee pot, serving tray, and a bunch of others things from her dad; board member, Kari Karr re-assembled all the cafe tables together; board member, Lisa Cooper gave them and the buffet table a good cleaning; volunteer, Marianne Strickland ironed all the table cloths.
Our program volunteers all pitched in for this event so they could see all the implications of programming decisions at a real, live event. They researched Polish desserts and then made and served an array of them -- although they were all spectacular, I have to give a special nod to Janet Murray who cooked up her grandmother's recipe of an amazingly delicious cherry, walnut pound cake. Janet also provided labels for all the food -- in English and Polish!
Program committee volunteer, Jeff Nixon brought over stage lights; Diane Boulais became book seller for a night, managing that aspect for Gary Gildner, our guest author for the evening. Volunteer Deb Dila took photos of the on-stage action and helped Craig Convissor with electrical -- it took a lot of extension cords to plug in all the lights to create the bistro/cafe effect. Janet Murray and Bill Kerans, board member and marketing committee co-chair, staffed the registration table.
George Dila, from Ludington Visiting Writers, gave an eloquent and lively introduction for Gary Gildner. And, Gildner was a treat -- a master storyteller, historian, teacher, and writer, who kept our attention for well over an hour. Al Villadsen donated his concertina accompaniment, thanks to a bit of persuasion from Craig Convissor.
Connie Rossman covered both the workshop and the evening for the Ludington Daily News. If I missed anyone's contribution, I am really sorry -- it's not intentional in any way.
