NETWORK NEWS HIGHLIGHT: Proud to Share Our Stories through the Ages
|
Proud to Share Our Stories through the Ages LGBT seniors and youth sharing coming out stories? LGBT seniors and youth eating lunch together?
Yes, you read that right! On Friday, June 12th, in honor of pride month, Lavender Seniors, the Rainbow Community Center, and GSA Network organized a LGBT senior/youth storytelling lunch mixer at the United Methodist Church in Walnut Creek.
It's not every day that queer youth and seniors have the opportunity to network with one another and to get a glimpse into each other's lives. For three hours LGBT youth and seniors shared their personal coming out stories by starting with a panel to address all those in the audience. Kris Hameister, a graduating senior from Lick-Wilmerding High School, believes that the, "The Lavender Seniors Luncheon was an amazing experience. The opportunity to hear the coming out stories of a few elders in the LGBT community really helped me gain a unique perspective on society's progress with respects to the LGBT community."
After the panel, everyone gathered for lunch and broke off into small groups to talk about their lives and experiences as youth and seniors. The day then ended with raffling off prizes!
This lunch mixer was also educational thanks to one Lavender Seniors member, Marvin Burrows, who came up with a visual timeline of the LGBT movement. As Kris shared, "In California's current political climate, it is easy to forget how far we've already come while looking at how far we still have to go, but the stories of the Lavender Seniors helped me to realize how lucky I am to have been born in a world made already more accepting than the one into which they were born."
Michael Aiyar, a graduating senior from Marin Academy, was inspired to continue his social justice activism after hearing the seniors share their stories. Michael says "I really enjoyed working with the seniors. it was great to hear their stories and see how much better things are for us than they were in the past. At the same time, it made me want to work harder and make sure that things are even better for the next generation."
Although this was the very first East Bay LGBT Youth and Senior Storytelling lunch, Lavender Seniors, Rainbow Community Center, and GSA Network are committed to making this storytelling lunch a tradition in honor of celebrating June as LGBTQ Pride Month.

Frameline33: Spotlight on Films for Youth!
GSA Network is proud to co-present the Frameline33 showing of Straightlaced: How Gender's Got Us All Tied UP
Friday, June 26, 6:00 PM Roxie Theater
It's tough growing up in this culture, figuring out who you are and where (or whether) you fit in. In the typical American high school, where calling a person "gay" is the ultimate insult, it's even more difficult for teenagers who don't conform to the gender roles touted in mainstream movies, magazines and TV. It's about time somebody started talking to young people about sexual diversity, tolerance and self-confidence, and the gutsy teens - queer, transgender and straight - speaking directly to the camera in this vibrant documentary do a splendid job of getting the ball rolling.

LGBT YOUTH - SPEAK OUT ABOUT YOUR SCHOOL EXPERIENCES!
Help GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network) inform education policymakers and the public about what's really going on in our nation's schools by completing the 2009 National School Climate Survey, GLSEN's sixth national survey about the experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender youth in school. If you are identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT), attended high school or middle school sometime during the last school year (2008-2009) and are at least 13 years old, tell us about your experiences in school. To add your GSA to the list, send the name of your GSA, your school and your city and state to [email protected] . We will pass your name on to API Equality, the group organizing this campaign.

COMMUNITIES OF COLOR STATEMENT RE PROP 8 DECISION
As organizations that represent or work with diverse racial and ethnic communities in California, or allies of such organizations, we issue the following statement in response to the California Supreme Court's decision in the lawsuits to stop the implementation of Proposition 8:
We are extremely saddened that the Supreme Court chose to uphold Proposition 8 and allow blatant discrimination to be written into the state Constitution. As people of color, we are disturbed that the highest court in our state would abandon its responsibility to ensure that all groups are treated equally under the state Constitution. Despite the structural protections that should prevent the initiative power from being used this way, the Supreme Court has allowed a simple majority vote to strip away the rights of a protected minority group. We fear not only for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender members of our communities, but for all people of color and other vulnerable minority groups regardless of sexual orientation. We vow to restore marriage equality to California and to make our state a place that guarantees equality and justice for all.
However, we applaud the Supreme Court for ruling that the marriages entered into by the November 4th vote remain valid. Many of our community members are among the 18,000 couples who were able to marry in California between June and November 2008, and we are thrilled that they will continue to be treated equally to all other married couples in this state. We believe it is important that the Court understood that married lesbian and gay couples relied upon the rule of law, and that basic rights must not be granted temporarily and then retroactively taken away. However, it is bittersweet to uphold the 18,000 existing marriages while treating all other same-sex couples inequally.

9. Beyond Hatred - Documentary on PBS June 30th
|
In September 2002, three skinheads were roaming a park in Rheims, France, looking to "do an Arab," when they settled for a gay man instead. Twenty-nine-year-old Franois Chenu fought back fiercely, but he was beaten unconscious and thrown into a river, where he drowned. The acclaimed French verit film Beyond Hatred is the story of the crime's aftermath; above all, of the Chenu family's brave and heartrending struggle to seek justice while trying to make sense of such pointless violence and unbearable loss. With remarkable dignity, they fight to transcend hatred and the inevitable desire for revenge.

12. White Anti-Racist Youth Activist Workshop, Y-Step Summer Institute
|
Youth Step Towards Addressing Racism
Dear Y-Step Family!
Greetings from Y-Step! We hope this note finds you well and happily anticipating the summer. We are writing to you with exciting news! Many young people who have gone through our workshops have asked: "How as a white youth can I continue these important conversations about challenging racism? How can I get more actively involved in struggles for racial justice?"
The Y-Step collective is currently planning a 3-day Summer Institute for high-school aged white-identified youth, which will take place in early/mid August, to help answer some of these questions. It will offer youth the opportunity to engage and build their analysis, while developing tools to be active participants in anti-racist struggles.
The Institute will delve deeper into issues of racial inequality as it affects, in particular, the education system, and offer more chances to see concrete examples of what it looks like to stand up for justice. The Institute will allow white youth to connect with other youth who care about justice and want to feel positively empowered to take action. The Summer Institute is a opportunity for white youth to deepen their analysis- which means that we are specifically outreaching to young folks who have either: 1. Gone through one or more Y-Step workshops or 2. White youth who may not have gone through a Y-Step workshop before, but who have already engaged in some level of analysis and/or political education regarding racism, privilege, and systems of oppression- and we are hoping that our allies and supporters can provide referrals for young white folks who they think would be a good match.
We need your help to SPREAD THE WORD to young white folks who are interested in learning more about systemic injustice and how to take a stand for a better world! Some of our outreach is being done internally with the youth we have already worked with, but we still need more support getting youth from other organizations, public schools, youth who wouldn't otherwise be able to work with us, etc. Y-Step Summer Youth Institute The Institute will take place during ONE of the following options (will be determined based on youth availability): From Sunday, August 9- Tuesday, August 11 From Sunday, August 16- Tuesday, August 18 If interested, youth or their adult allies should email us with the following contact information: Name Phone number Email Age School Have you participated in a workshop with Y-Step before? When? How did you hear about Y-Step's Summer Institute? Your availability for the 2 options listed above (can you make one or both?)
Thank you for your continued support and help.

24. California Hall of Fame Dreamers Challenge Scholarship
|
Do you know a high schooler with the vision to change the world?
The California Hall of Fame Dreamers Challenge can help their dream come true.
The California Museum has launched the 2nd annual California Hall of Fame Dreamers Challenge; a scholarship awarded to California high school seniors graduating in 2010.
$5,000 will be given to a student from both Northern and Southern California who can explain how their dreams will change the world - in any medium that best reflects their vision. Unlike most scholarship contests, the Museum encourages students to submit artwork, a composition of music, a poem, a digital presentation, an essay ... anything. The possibilities are endless.
For inspiration, students can look to the 38 California Hall of Fame inductees, among them Tiger Woods, Steve Jobs, Walt Disney, Sally Ride and Alice Walker. To read how they changed the world, check out CaliforniaMuseum.org.
The Museum will be accepting entries until October 5, 2009. The Governor and First Lady will present the winners at the California Hall of Fame ceremony in December.
For more information on the California Hall of Fame Dreamers Challenge, visit http://www.californiamuseum.org/exhibits/halloffame/dreamers-challenge. This site will direct students to the rules and guidelines, the entry form, and winners of 2008.

26. NEWS: Student's Harvey Milk report prompts district apology

Student's Harvey Milk report prompts district apology LOS ANGELES TIMESJune 11, 2009 by: Tony Perry
School officials in the community of Ramona in northern San Diego County have apologized to a sixth-grade girl for refusing to let her deliver a report on gay activist Harvey Milk during class time.
Prodded by the American Civil Liberties Union, officials this week allowed Natalie Jones, 12, a student at Mt. Woodson Elementary School, to give her report.
In April, school officials decided that the Ramona Unified School District's sex education policy required them to notify parents about the report and allow them to keep their children from hearing it. As a result, Natalie gave her report during lunch time. Other students gave their reports during class time.
But after the ACLU threatened litigation, Ramona officials decided they had misinterpreted their own policy .
In a letter to Natalie and her parents, Supt. Robert Graeff and Mt. Woodson Principal Theresa Grace apologized and said they had acted out of an abundance of caution for the "tender sensibilities" of Natalie's fellow students.
"It is our hope that -- together -- we can all view this incident as a learning experience and emerge wiser from the entire experience," wrote Graeff and Grace, on behalf of themselves and the school board.
Natalie's mother, Bonnie Jones, said in a statement that, "I think if Harvey Milk were still here today, he'd be happy about how this all turned out."
Natalie said she decided to do a report on Milk, who as a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors was one of the first openly gay politicians to hold office in the United States, after seeing the movie about him starring Sean Penn.
