GSA ACTIVIST SPOTLIGHT

Kyle BSacramento high school student, Kyle Bodolay, utilizes his GAYLA experience to testify in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee in support of the Mental Health Services for At-Risk Youth Bill (SB 543) which would allow youth ages 12-17 to consent to mental health treatment or counseling without parental permission.

We want to congradulate Rochelle Hamilton in her successful lawsuit against her school district, standing up for her rights and the rights of other LGBT students at her school.  Read more in the news article at the end of this newsletter.

GSA Network's Offices will be closed on Monday May 25th.

NETWORK NEWS HIGHLIGHT: First Ever Sacramento Summit a Success!

On Saturday, May 9th the Sacramento area held its first ever Greater Sacramento Area Gay Straight Alliance Summit or GSA2.  The Sacramento Gay and Lesbian Center really loved GSA Network's Youth Empowerment Summit and wanted a similar summit in their own local area.  So, as organizers would have it, GSA Network collaborated with them to build the GSA Summit!

Enrique Manjarrez, Youth Program Coordinator at the Sacramento Gay and Lesbian Center, deserves mad props for the hard work he put into organizing this summit.  Not only did Enrique work long, hard hours, but he is also an unpaid volunteer and organized the summit for no pay!  Way to go, Enrique!!

On the ridiculously hot May day, numerous high school students gathered to learn about activism, social justice, GSA organizing, safer sex, and their legal rights.  They heard great keynote speakers from the political sphere in Sacramento and members from the local Sac PFLAG chapter.

GSA Network provided 5 youth trainers who put on more than half of the workshops for this particular summit.  As Alex Adsit, a youth trainer from Oakland, shared  "I had a wonderful time this past weekend up in Sacramento helping to empower fellow youth. I think the most important thing is that this conference was in Sacramento . . . It was a powerful experience and Enrique the youth coordinator up in Sacramento did a really good job organizing it! It is always a fun experience networking with fellow queer youth from different places throughout the state and I found the youth from Sacramento exemplary activists. I was really proud of everything they took from it and I will be looking out for them in the future!"

Another great thing about this conference is that Enrique was able to get almost everything, including the amazing hotel space, donated!

The Sacramento Area, especially the surrounding towns and cities, can be quite conservative.  The summit was a great way to outreach to LGBTQ youth in the area.  As Kyle Bodolay, a Sac student says,  "Attending the Sacramento Summit gave me a better idea on how to run my GSA, and what I should do within it. Although the Sacramento Summit was small, I feel like I got more information because the group sizes were smaller. I cannot wait to attend the 2nd annual Greater Sacramento Summit!"

If you are interested in getting more involved with the Sacramento Gay and Lesbian Center please contact: Enrique Manjarrez at 916-442-0185 or [email protected]

And if you're interested in being more involved with GSA Network NorCal programs, please contact Kiely Hosmon at 415.552.4229 or [email protected].

7. Beyond Hatred - Documentary on PBS June 30th

In September 2002, three skinheads were roaming a park in Rheims,
France, looking to "do an Arab," when they settled for a gay man
instead. Twenty-nine-year-old Franois Chenu fought back fiercely, but
he was beaten unconscious and thrown into a river, where he drowned. The
acclaimed French verit film Beyond Hatred is the story of the crime's
aftermath; above all, of the Chenu family's brave and heartrending
struggle to seek justice while trying to make sense of such pointless
violence and unbearable loss. With remarkable dignity, they fight to
transcend hatred and the inevitable desire for revenge.

19. Prop 8 Decision Day Actions (S.F.)

Fellow Marriage Equality Supporters

While we wait anxiously here in California for the Supreme Court to issue their decision, we celebrate the unanimous decision in Iowa, the override of the Governor's Veto in Vermont and the unanimous vote to recognize marriage equality in D.C. which gives us hope that California will restore marriage equality soon too!  No matter what the decision from the court, momentum is on our side, and we must be prepared.

TAKE ACTION ON DAY OF DECISION

Win or lose, we want to provide our community  with an outlet to express their emotions, show support for marriage equality, and contextualize this moment  within the larger civil rights movement.

The Court provides 24 hours notice of when it will issue its decision. Typically the Court has issued its decisions on Thursday and Mondays.  The court will rule anytime in the next 60 days. The last  possible date is June 3rd , but the rumor is that the Court will rule earlier on this decision - no one knows for sure.

We are assisting the legal groups with locating available couples (married and want to be married) to speak out on Decision Day and share their story.
In particular we are seeking for couples who are able to be at the California Supreme Court steps at 10:30am as the decision is handed out.
If interested, please contact [email protected] with the couples name(s), phone number, ethnicity, and languages spoken.) Thank you for ensuring that we have diverse real-life stories to share with the media on the day of decision.

29. NEWS: ACLU sues Knox, Nashville school systems over blocking access to Web sites about gay/lesbian issues

Knox County and Nashville's school systems were sued Tuesday by the American Civil Liberties Union, which accuses the systems of unconstitutionally blocking student access to educational Web sites about lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues.

The suit was filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Middle Tennessee on behalf of Fulton High School freshman Bryanna Shelton, Fulton librarian Karyn Storts-Brinks and Nashville high school students Keila Franks and Emily Logan.

Both school systems use Internet filtering software to block access to LGBT Web sites or "sites that provide information regarding, support, promote, or cater to one's sexual orientation or gender identity including but not limited to lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, and transgender sites," the suit states. The ACLU is not challenging schools' right to block "sexually gratuitous" sites.

A Knox County schools' spokesman declined comment.

The ACLU said in April it would file suit if the school systems didn't unblock the sites.

The school systems block Web sites in the "LGBT" category but not sites that "condemn homosexuality" or that promote the idea that LGBT people can be cured, according to an ACLU release.

"Allowing access to Web sites that present one side of an issue while blocking sites that present the other side is illegal viewpoint discrimination," Catherine Crump, ACLU staff attorney, said in a statement. "This discriminatory censorship does nothing to make students safe from material that may actually be harmful, but only hurts them by making it impossible to access important educational material."

The Children's Internet Protection Act requires public schools that receive certain funding to block access to "visual depictions" that are "obscene; child pornography; or harmful to minors," the ACLU suit states.

The suit argues that the school systems' filters block sites not prohibited by the Children's Internet Protection Act, however, including the site for the Gay Straight Alliance Network, which encourages "youth activists to start Gay-Straight Alliance clubs and fight homophobia and transphobia in schools." not challenging schools' right to block "sexually gratuitous" sites...

30. NEWS: School district pays student over harassment

Jim Doyle, Chronicle Staff Writer
Tuesday, May 19, 2009

A high school student who says that she was harassed by her teachers in 2007, because she is a lesbian has won a legal settlement from the Vallejo City Unified School District, officials confirmed Monday.

Under the agreement, the district will pay $25,000 to Rochelle Hamilton, 16, who had come out as a lesbian at age 13. The district will also bolster its anti-gay-discrimination training and complaint procedures for all staff and students and be monitored by the American Civil Liberties Union for five years.

Superintendent Mary Bull said the school district agreed to the settlement without admitting any liability - and even though an outside investigator hired by the district could not substantiate the student's allegations.

"Even after California has passed so many laws prohibiting discrimination and harassment based on sexual orientation in our schools, the reality is that these laws are not being enforced in many school districts," said Elizabeth Gill, an ACLU attorney involved in the case.
