GSA NETWORK NEWS HIGHLIGHT: Celebrate Harvey Milk Day!

All students are encouraged to celebrate Harvey Milk Day,
on Friday, May 22.
This is great way for your GSA to take action this month!

What is the purpose of Harvey Milk Day?
The purpose of Harvey Milk Day is to educate Californians about an extraordinary leader whose courageous work to end discrimination against the Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual, Transgender community in the 1970s set the stage for many of the civil rights advances we see today.  Harvey Milk's birthday was on May 22.

Who's Harvey Milk?
Harvey Milk was an activist, organizer, and the first openly gay man elected as a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in the late 1970s. Unfortunately, he was assassinated on November 27, 1978 along with San Francisco Mayor George Moscone. Harvey Milk came out and started organizing against discrimination of gay and lesbian business owners in the Castro, and against the Briggs Initiative (this was a Bill introduced in the California Legislature that would have made it illegal for lesbian and gay men to be teachers in California schools). For more information see the GLBT History Month website: Harvey Milk

10 Things YOU Can Do to celebrate Harvey Milk Day
 on May 22!
1.    Show the movie "The Times of Harvey Milk" to your GSA, your class or your whole school and hold a discussion afterward.
2.    Write an article for your school paper about Harvey Milk and what his story means to you.
3.    Ask your school to have an announcement on the PA system about Harvey Milk Day.  See if you can share why it is important for you as a student.
4.    Hold an assembly to celebrate Harvey Milk, and use it as a time to educate your peers about LGBT issues and the impact that Harvey Milk had on our community.
5.    Encourage your teachers to have a class discussion on Harvey Milk and the LGBT Political Movement.
6.    Have an LGBT teach in, take over the cafeteria or study hall and teach about Harvey Milk and other LGBT leaders.
7.    Bay Area schools: Go see the special LGBT History Exhibit on 18th and Castro in San Francisco. (It's free for students from May 18-22 -- see our announcement below for details.)  If you're not in the Bay Area, create your own mini-LGBT history exhibit.
8.    Create a poster campaign for your school (you can use the GLBT History Month site for more information).

9. & 10. Write Letters and Sign Petitions

Here are some points to make in your letters to your legislators or the governor:

*Let your elected official know that Harvey Milk Day would offer an opportunity to teach Californians about the LGBT movement

* To educate Californians about an extraordinary leader whose courageous work to end discrimination against the LGBT community in the 1970s set the stage for many of the civil rights advances we see today.

* Given the alarming rates of bullying and violence against LGBT youth in our schools, the bill also aims to give all students a positive role model from the LGBT community who showed that an ordinary person can make an incredible difference when they dare to be themselves.

9.    Sign on to Equality California's petition to tell the Governor that Harvey Milk Matters, click this link: http://www.eqca.org/harveymilkday (they are collecting signatures till May 21st so that they can deliver them to the Governor on May 22.)
10.    Start a letter writing campaign to encourage your legislators to vote for the Harvey Milk Day Bill (SB 572) into law. Don't know who your legislator is, click here to find out: http://www.legislature.ca.gov/port-zipsearch.html
Now, go to their website and email them.

Harvey Milk dedicated his life to fighting for LGBT rights.  Let's honor him in style on Friday, May 22!  Tell GSA Network what your GSA is doing!!  Email [email protected]!

2. GSA2! - Greater Sacramento Area GSA Summit, May 9th

Hello Advisers and GSA/QSA Members,GSA2-2009

I am happy to invite you all to the first ever Greater Sacramento Area, Gay Straight Alliance Summit or GSA2.

This is an event being presented by the Sacramento Gay and Lesbian Center with partnerships by the GSA Network, The Rainbow Chamber Foundation, and the Greens Hotel.

I encourage you all to attend, we will be having workshops for Junior High, High School, and College students.  Advisers, we will have workshops for you as well, and also some time for allof you to meet and network with each other.

One of the other goals is to create a college mentor program, a program for junior and senior high school student, to meet and connect with a college student so that when that high school student gets to college, they will have some one to help them out.  This will also help with the fear of trying to find their place in college; as well as, be able to continue with there involvement in the LGBTQI community but this time in a QSA!

A fun twist to the event is we would like to recognize those High School seniors who have been parts of your GSA's; with that we will be having a graduation ceremony for them in the evening.

The Summit will be on Saturday, May 9th at the Greens Hotel.  Please visit our website, or download the brochure for further information and to register.

8. Sacramento Student Mobilization: STAND UP FOR EDUCATION - May 13

SAVE THE DATE: Wed. May 13th; CQE - Sacramento Student Mobilization

Mass Student Mobilization to STAND UP for EDUCATION funding!
Invest in California's Future - Fully Prepare ALL Students for College & Career!

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009
State Capitol - Sacramento
Start Gathering at 10am on the South Steps

Join the Campaign for Quality Education (CQE)  as hundreds of students, parents, and community advocates gather from across California for a statewide student action.   As our nation and state faces the largest economic crisis in recent history,  it's vital that we invest in our future by investing in education, health and other human services.

Now more than ever, it's important to advocate for education quality and equity in California's public schools.  The current economic downtown has our leaders cutting and borrowing, with too little focus on raising the revenue that's needed to provide the kind of education our students need.  The  budget debates and upcoming Special Election are an opportunity to highlight the continued issues of educational inequality, inequity and funding in the State of California.

On Wednesday, May 13 the week of the the 55th anniversary of the US Supreme Court's Brown v. Board of Education decision, CQE members and allies-students, parents, community advocates and supporters-will converge on Sacramento to oppose the Governor's budget cuts and demand that California prioritize education for ALL students by fully funding education and by creating an action plan for long-term sustainable funding that targets students with the greatest academic needs.

More information to come, for updates please visit: http://quality-education.org

The Campaign for Quality Education (CQE), a statewide coalition of grassroots, civil rights, policy and research organizations committed to educational equity for all communities in California's public schools.  The CQE engages communities of color and low-income communities to actively develop and support state and local education policy agendas, inspire a public consciousness that genuinely values education, and advance the movement for racial and economic justice.

OutSpoken by Prince Gomolvilas
A Diversity & Safe Schools Play for Teens

Touring Northern California Schools and Communities
Mondays through Thursdays from April 6th - May 14th 2009

OutSpoken by Prince Gomolvilas is based directly on the voices of young people, and looks at the many reasons teens feel ostracized in school, at home and in their community including race, religion, sexual orientation & body type. This original YouthAware script has been presented to bay area teens since 2005. OutSpoken takes a unique look at issues of diversity from many different perspectives. The play and discussion get teens to talk and think about stereotypes, labels, self-esteem, peer pressure, homophobia and school safety. Through OutSpoken, we hope young people will find new ways to move past their differences to a real place of tolerance and understanding. This is a great program for your GSA or other diversity based club to sponsor on campus. OutSpoken is available to perform up to two times a day at your school. We are available to present community performances of this program on Monday and Tuesday evenings during the run of the tour. Each performance includes a facilitated discussion with the cast and handouts are provided for teachers to continue discussion in the classroom.

You may download a preview copy of the script at http://www.nctcsf.org/outspoken.html .

For more information or to book a tour date for your school, email [email protected] or call (415) 694-6149.

19. Prop 8 Decision Day Actions (S.F.)

Fellow Marriage Equality Supporters

While we wait anxiously here in California for the Supreme Court to issue their decision, we celebrate the unanimous decision in Iowa, the override of the Governor's Veto in Vermont and the unanimous vote to recognize marriage equality in D.C. which gives us hope that California will restore marriage equality soon too!  No matter what the decision from the court, momentum is on our side, and we must be prepared.

TAKE ACTION ON DAY OF DECISION

Win or lose, we want to provide our community  with an outlet to express their emotions, show support for marriage equality, and contextualize this moment  within the larger civil rights movement.

The Court provides 24 hours notice of when it will issue its decision. Typically the Court has issued its decisions on Thursday and Mondays.  The court will rule anytime in the next 60 days. The last  possible date is June 3rd , but the rumor is that the Court will rule earlier on this decision - no one knows for sure.

We are assisting the legal groups with locating available couples (married and want to be married) to speak out on Decision Day and share their story.
In particular we are seeking for couples who are able to be at the California Supreme Court steps at 10:30am as the decision is handed out.
If interested, please contact [email protected] with the couples name(s), phone number, ethnicity, and languages spoken.) Thank you for ensuring that we have diverse real-life stories to share with the media on the day of decision.

33. MODELS OF EXCELLENCE SCHOLARSHIP

The Models of Excellence scholarship is given annually for LGBTQ youth and allies who are currently graduating from a Southern California senior high school (private, public, or parochial).

The scholarship program began in 1994 as a single award named in memory of Peter Kaufman, the son of Alvin and Irene Kaufman. As time passed, more commemorations were made, and the name was changed to the Models of Excellence Scholarship competition.

Awards of $1,000 and $500 are given each year to high school seniors who have been accepted to colleges and universities.
The presentations are made at a special ceremony held the last weekend of June, 2009 (TBA), for the recipients and their sponsors. Winners must be present!

In considering recipients, the scholarship committee looks for students, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, who have demonstrated a commitment to the advancement of civil rights in LGBTQ communities. Scholarships are funded by private donations and organizations.

Many donors have expressed an interest in sponsoring a scholarship in their name, on behalf of an organization, or in memory of someone else. Please contact our office at 626.577.4553 or e-mail [email protected] for more information.

34. NEWS: Court lets private schools expel lesbians

by Bob Egelko
San Francisco Chronicle
Thursday, April 30, 2009

(04-29) 16:14 PDT SAN FRANCISCO -- The state Supreme Court left intact Wednesday a lower-court ruling that said a private religious high school wasn't covered by California civil rights law and could expel students it believed were lesbians.

Over Justice Kathryn Mickle Werdegar's dissent, the court denied review of an appeal by parents of two girls who were expelled from a high school in Riverside County. A lawyer for the parents said the ruling, which is binding on trial courts statewide, would allow private schools to discriminate against students on any basis they chose, including sex and religion.

The girls were juniors at California Lutheran High School in the town of Wildomar when the principal, Gregory Bork, called them to his office in September 2005 and questioned them separately about their sexual orientation, after another student reported postings on their MySpace pages.

Bork suspended the girls based on their answers, and the school's directors expelled them a month later. The girls, who later graduated from another high school, have not been identified and have not discussed their sexual orientation, said their parents' attorney, Kirk Hanson.

The parents sued under the Unruh Act, a 1959 state law that forbids discrimination by businesses. It was amended in 2005 to include bias based on sexual orientation and someone else's perception of sexual orientation. State education law also prohibits anti-gay bias, but that applies only to public schools.
