GSA NETWORK NEWS HIGHLIGHT: South Bay Leadership Training a Success!

GSA high school and middle school students and their adult allies represented on Saturday, April 4th at the Billy DeFrank Center in San Jose.

Youth and adults from various GSAs came together for a fun, interactive, peer-to-peer training that provided them with the skills to fight homophobia and transphobia in schools.

Led by GSA student leaders from around Northern California, the training showed the students who attended how to start and run a kick-ass GSA, how to do outreach, and how to build membership.

The training also focused on understanding the importance of GSA diversity, the differences between gender and sexual orientation, and most importantly, learning the laws that protect LGBTQ youth in schools.

The training wrapped up with a solid bang by providing information and how-to steps on taking action against slurs, harassment, and discrimination in their schools.

A middle school student who attended the Leadership Training shared, "It was helpful learning how to have a good meeting and learning skills about how to run a GSA.  I also liked the campaign part."

Almost all participants said that some of the best parts of the training were understanding the difference between gender and sexuality and learning about their legal rights and the importance of AB 537 (the California Student Safety and Violence Prevention Act of 2000) and SB 71 (the California Comprehensive Sexual Health and HIV/AIDS Prevention Act of 2004).

Piper Hoffman, one of the youth trainers and Youth Council members, exclaimed, "It was a wonderfully new experience I learned from while having fun."

Kris S., another trainer and Youth Council member, also believes, "It was a great experience to teach others about things such as Understanding Gender and Sexuality, Legal Rights, Campaigns and Days of Action, How to Have a Kick Ass GSA, and GSA Diversity. It is truly a wonderful experience to be able to teach others things that can help them out in the long run and even help them through school."

If you're super bummed that you missed the San Jose Leadership Training, don't worry, as there will be an amazing GSA Summit coming up Saturday, May 9th in Sacramento!  Please find all the information below in the regular portion of GSA Network news.

And if you're wondering how these youth got to become trainers for this Leadership Training in San Jose, then apply to be on the Youth Council!  Or, better yet, apply for Activist Camp this summer!

3. Greater Sacramento Area GSA Summit, May 9th

Hello Advisers and GSA/QSA Members,

I am happy to invite you all to the first ever Greater Sacramento Area, Gay Straight Alliance Summit or GSA2.

This is an event being presented by the Sacramento Gay and Lesbian Center with partnerships by the GSA Network, The Rainbow Chamber Foundation, and the Greens Hotel.

I encourage you all to attend, we will be having workshops for Junior High, High School, and College students.  Advisers, we will have workshops for you as well, and also some time for allof you to meet and network with each other.

One of the other goals is to create a college mentor program, a program for junior and senior high school student, to meet and connect with a college student so that when that high school student gets to college, they will have some one to help them out.  This will also help with the fear of trying to find there place in college; as well as, be able to continue with there involvement in the LGBTQI community but this time in a QSA!

A fun twist to the event is we would like to recognize those High School seniors who have been parts of your GSA's; with that we will be having a graduation ceremony for them in the evening.

The Summit will be on Saturday, May 9th at the Greens Hotel.  Please visit our website, or download the brochure for further information and to register.

SOUL Summer School is an intensive 8-week introduction to community organizing and social change, designed for young activists who have been involved with social justice organizing for at least one year. SOUL is dedicated to building the skills of young women, young people of color, working class, and queer people as the next generation of leaders in the social justice movement.

SOUL Summer School provides a structured time to work full-time to develop your grassroots organizing skills and your political analysis. SOUL Summer School has three components:

ORGANIZING INTERNSHIPS with local organizations that work within working class communities and communities of color, fighting alongside people for their rights. Through these internships, you'll get on-the-ground experience with the work it takes to build community power.

ORGANIZING SKILLS TRAINING so you can learn the concrete tools you'll need to organize for power in our communities. The trainings provide space to build the skills you will use in your internships. SOUL's trainings will develop skills like outreach & recruitment, action planning, and facilitation.

POLITICAL EDUCATION to think more deeply about the current political and economic context, especially the issues impacting working-class communities of color. OutSpoken by Prince Gomolvilas

A Diversity & Safe Schools Play for Teens

Touring Northern California Schools and Communities
Mondays through Thursdays from April 6th - May 14th 2009

National Day of Silence April 17th 2009

OutSpoken by Prince Gomolvilas is based directly on the voices of young people, and looks at the many reasons teens feel ostracized in school, at home and in their community including race, religion, sexual orientation & body type. This original YouthAware script has been presented to bay area teens since 2005. OutSpoken takes a unique look at issues of diversity from many different perspectives. The play and discussion get teens to talk and think about stereotypes, labels, self-esteem, peer pressure, homophobia and school safety. Through OutSpoken, we hope young people will find new ways to move past their differences to a real place of tolerance and understanding. This is a great program for your GSA or other diversity based club to sponsor on campus. OutSpoken is available to perform up to two times a day at your school. We are available to present community performances of this program on Monday and Tuesday evenings during the run of the tour. Each performance includes a facilitated discussion with the cast and handouts are provided for teachers to continue discussion in the classroom.

You may download a preview copy of the script at http://www.nctcsf.org/outspoken.html .

For more information or to book a tour date for your school, email [email protected] or call (415) 694-6149.

11. Walk Against Rape! April 25th, 2009 (S.F.)

San Francisco Women Against Rape
Walk Against Rape
April 25th, 2009

Walk Against Rape!
Come walk with us for a great cause!

San Francisco Women Against Rape invites you to participate in our 4th annual Walk Against Rape. As part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Walk Against Rape will be held on April 25th, 2009.

The walk is a celebration that empowers survivors, their friends, families and supporters, and serves to break the silence by walking together on the streets against rape, and declare that San Francisco will not tolerate sexual violence.

It is a 3.1 mile walk starting at Justin Herman Plaza at 10am and culminating in a rally at noon in Dolores Mission Park. Walkers will arrive in the park to find festivities such as speakers, performances, vendors, the Clothesline Project on display, prizes for the highest fundraisers, several community organizations offering information and resources, and food and drink.

At SFWAR, we believe that no single individual, organization, foundation, or business alone can stop the epidemic of sexual assault, but by responding as a whole community, we each bring our piece of the solution. This is where your participation counts!

Join us as we make visible what has historically been silenced and invisible.

To register go to www.firstgiving.com/sfwar or register morning of the event.

For more information, please visit our website at www.sfwar.org or call 415-861-2024.

31. NEWS: Teen Commits Suicide Due to Bullying: Parents Sue School for Son's Death
Family Wants No Money but Insists School Address Bullying and Three Other Suicides

by Susan Donaldson James
ABC News
April 2, 2009

In a federal lawsuit, the parents of Eric Mohat allege that their son committed suicide after being tormented by bullies at his Mentor, Ohio, High School. They say the school knew about the bullying and failed to protect their son. The lawsuit -- filed March 27, alleges that the quiet but likable boy, who was involved in theater and music, was called "gay," "fag," "queer" and "homo" and often in front of his teachers. Most of the harassment took place in math class and the teacher -- an athletic coach -- was accused of failing to protect the boy.

32. NEWS: DHS sends boy home for dressing as a girl

By Suevon Lee
Ocala.com (Florida)

March 31, 2009

Inside the halls of any typical American public high school, the outfit would hardly be construed as outlandish: a V-neck T-shirt, blue jeans and high-heeled boots, accentuated by earrings and a necklace.

Worn by a male student, however, the outfit might raise some eyebrows.

That's what it did at Dunnellon High School, where last week 11th-grader Justin Reynolds showed up at school dressed that way, sporting eyeliner and mascara as well.

His appearance led to his early dismissal by school administrators.

"It wasn't anything overdramatic," Reynolds said of his attire. "It's an expression of yourself, no matter what. To dress out of your own gender shouldn't be anything."

The 16-year-old student, who is gay, said he first ran the idea by his teacher a day beforehand. She discouraged it but gave him the opportunity to address his classmates that morning.

"A lot of people responded to it well. I didn't think I was causing that much of a disruption," Reynolds said, recalling the cheers and high-fives that greeted him, especially after he spoke in tribute to Gwen Araujo, a transgender California teen brutally murdered in October 2002.

In a brief conference held with the school's principal and assistant principal shortly thereafter, Reynolds was asked to leave school for the day. He was out the door by 11 a.m.
