GSA NETWORK NEWS HIGHLIGHT:
GSA Activists organize "Youth Today: Walking for Equality" March in L.A.

On Sunday, March 22nd over 300 youth and their adult allies marched through the streets of Los Angeles to show support for marriage equality and to raise awareness about homophobia, transphobia, discrimination, abuse, and the forced homelessness of LGBT youth. The march, called Youth Today: Walking for Equality, was a 1.6 mile march from Chinatown in Los Angeles, through Placita Olvera, to a rally at City Hall.  SoCalYouthmarch2009

The march was organized by a group of GSA activists throughout Southern California, as a way to include their voices in the grassroots movement that has followed the passage of Proposition 8 by bringing attention to the issues LGBT youth face everyday. Youth organizer and President of Foshay Learning Center's GSA, Richard Aviles said of the march:

"I felt great during the march. It was beautiful to see that all the work that we all put on this march paid off, and I loved the fact that so many people showed up."

For over six weeks, a committed group of of youth met to plan the route of the march, name the march, define it's purpose, choose adult ally speakers, work on their speeches, and make t-shirts. The youth were supported by GSA Network and Equal Action, a new grassroots organization dedicated to fighting homophobia and transphobia by organizing actions in underrepresented communities, as well as help from Love, Honor, Cherish, API Equality LA, Christopher Street West, The Courage Campaign, Radical Women, Somos Familia, LifeWorks Mentoring, Bus Riders' Union, Equal Roots, and the Jordan/Rustin Coalition. Youth organizer and President of Glendale High's GSA, Ariel Bustamante-Lupton said of the planning process:

"Planning the march was an incredibly valuable experience.  It was really amazing to have older youth give us all of the support and tools we need, plus more in a greatly successful coalition.  I certainly worked on my own leadership and organizing skills, working with so many other strong characters, but I also learned that there are allies to youth that genuinely care about our voice."

The majority of youth organizers for the march are members of the Southern California Youth Council, and all are leaders in their GSAs. Many attributed their success organizing a large march in the outside community to the skills they gained leading their GSAs. Youth members of San Bernardino's Rainbow Pride Youth Alliance who attended were so inspired by the march that they are now planning a march for the Inland Empire.

GSA NETWORK ANNOUNCEMENTS

1. GSA Network and DeFrank Center Leadership Training! (San Jose)

defrankbanner1

This FREE event will be held on Saturday, April 4th from 11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. It includes breakfast and lunch!

So what is a GSA Network Leadership training?
Youth from various GSAs come together for a FUN, interactive, peer-to-peer training that provides students with the skills to fight homophobia and transphobia in schools. Led by other GSA leaders from around Northern California, the training will show students how to start and run a kick-ass GSA.

Topics include
* How to run a GSA meeting
* Outreach, membership building, and diversity
* Understanding gender and sexual orientation
* Understanding laws that protect LGBTQ youth in schools
* How to take action against slurs, harassment, and discrimination in your school.

Young people become activists because they respect themselves and other people too much to let anyone be treated like a second-class citizen. They believe in the basic worth of all human beings, including themselves. That's why so many students, including straight allies, are coming together to fight sexual orientation and gender identity discrimination at their schools. The goals of a student activism group include winning concrete improvements in people's lives, making students aware of their own power, and altering the relations of power. GSAs in California are leading the fight on social change and justice.

This is a great opportunity to network with other GSAs in your area while learning some new skills to strengthen your club.

WHO: GSA members, potential members, and GSA advisors
WHEN: Saturday, April 4th from 11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
WHERE: Billy DeFrank Center
938 The Alameda
San Jose, CA 95126
COST: Free!

GSA Network values the participation of adult allies in our fight against oppression and injustice in schools, and thus welcomes GSA Advisors and other adult allies to the leadership training. That being said, we ask that they help us to maintain the youth focus of this training.

OutSpoken by Prince Gomolvilas

A Diversity & Safe Schools Play for Teens

Touring Northern California Schools and Communities
Mondays through Thursdays from April 6th - May 14th 2009

National Day of Silence April 17th 2009

OutSpoken by Prince Gomolvilas is based directly on the voices of young people, and looks at the many reasons teens feel ostracized in school, at home and in their community including race, religion, sexual orientation & body type. This original YouthAware script has been presented to bay area teens since 2005. OutSpoken takes a unique look at issues of diversity from many different perspectives. The play and discussion get teens to talk and think about stereotypes, labels, self-esteem, peer pressure, homophobia and school safety. Through OutSpoken, we hope young people will find new ways to move past their differences to a real place of tolerance and understanding. This is a great program for your GSA or other diversity based club to sponsor on campus. OutSpoken is available to perform up to two times a day at your school. We are available to present community performances of this program on Monday and Tuesday evenings during the run of the tour. Each performance includes a facilitated discussion with the cast and handouts are provided for teachers to continue discussion in the classroom.

You may download a preview copy of the script at http://www.nctcsf.org/outspoken.html .

For more information or to book a tour date for your school, email [email protected] or call (415) 694-6149.

13. Walk Against Rape! April 25th, 2009 (S.F.)

San Francisco Women Against Rape
Walk Against Rape
April 25th, 2009

Walk Against Rape!
Come walk with us for a great cause!

San Francisco Women Against Rape invites you to participate in our 4th annual Walk Against Rape. As part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Walk Against Rape will be held on April 25th, 2009.

The walk is a celebration that empowers survivors, their friends, families and supporters, and serves to break the silence by walking together on the streets against rape, and declare that San Francisco will not tolerate sexual violence.

It is a 3.1 mile walk starting at Justin Herman Plaza at 10am and culminating in a rally at noon in Dolores Mission Park. Walkers will arrive in the park to find festivities such as speakers, performances, vendors, the Clothesline Project on display, prizes for the highest fundraisers, several community organizations offering information and resources, and food and drink.

At SFWAR, we believe that no single individual, organization, foundation, or business alone can stop the epidemic of sexual assault, but by responding as a whole community, we each bring our piece of the solution. This is where your participation counts!

Join us as we make visible what has historically been silenced and invisible.

To register go to www.firstgiving.com/sfwar or register morning of the event.

For more information, please visit our website at www.sfwar.org or call 415-861-2024.

33. NEWS: Education Secretary pledges safe schools for LGBT students

By Jennifer Vanasco
365gay.com
March 24, 2009

(Washington) Education Secretary Arne Duncan has told a gay student advocacy group that he intends to make schools safe for every student, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression.

Duncan made the pledge during a meeting with representatives of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network and a delegation of students and teachers.

It is the first time that a Secretary of Education has met with LGBT advocates. The Bush administration rejected calls to meet.

"It was moving to witness these students and teachers sharing their personal stories of pain, rejection, resilience and hope with the nation's top education official," said GLSEN Executive Director Eliza Byard who attended the meeting.

"Secretary Duncan showed great compassion for their experiences, respect for their perseverance and dedication to identifying effective responses to school climate issues. I am confident that we will see growing engagement with these issues at the Department of Education and truly positive change."

Duncan also expressed an interest in finding ways to highlight the problem of bullying and harassment in national discussions about education, and requested further data on a number of proposed interventions.

34. NEWS: Gay rights group support Student Civil Rights Act

The Desert Sun
March 23, 2009

Gay civil rights group filed a friend-of-the-court brief last week to support the state Attorney General's request to dismiss a lawsuit asking to invalidate the Student Civil Rights Act.

Among those who filed the brief were the National Center for Lesbian Rights in San Francisco, Lambda Legal, Equality California and the Gay Straight Alliance Network.

The brief, which was filed on Wednesday, argues that the complaint lacks legal merit, according to a news release.

"These laws protect the safety and well being of all students," Carolyn Laub, Gay Straight Alliance Network executive director, said in a new release.

"Thousands of California students endure daily harassment at school based on their sexual orientation or gender identity. Schools should be a safe space for everyone; it's hard to believe that some adults don't agree."

The Student Civil Rights Act, or Senate Bill 777, was enacted last year to protect students from harassment, discrimination and bullying.

35. NOTICIAS: Reclaman respeto por su orientacin sexual

La Opinin
Carlos Avils
3-23-2009

36. NEWS: ACLU sues Corona del Mar High School for cultivating 'homophobic' environment

The complaint cites the brief cancellation of a production of 'Rent' and a Facebook video in which football players threaten a female student. The district says the suit contains factual errors.

By Susannah Rosenblatt
LA Times
March 18, 2009

More than a month after controversy erupted over Corona del Mar High School's reported cancellation -- then rescheduling -- of a production of "Rent," the American Civil Liberties Union sued school officials Wednesday for fostering a "sexist" and "homophobic" atmosphere.

While the complaint cites the show's brief cancellation as one example, much of it focuses on the aftermath of a Facebook video posted in January in which three Corona del Mar football players threatened to rape and kill a female classmate and used homosexual slurs. The video was posted on the online profile of a fourth student, who reportedly threatened the young woman at school. The video has since been removed.

School officials, according to the ACLU, did little to punish the boys or protect the young woman, even after her parents repeatedly expressed concerns about her safety.

"School and district officials, through their action and inaction, have not only failed to take steps to address this hostile environment, but they have contributed to it and given sanction to it," read the 36-page complaint filed in Orange County Superior Court.

The Newport-Mesa Unified School District was "attempting to resolve this matter" after the ACLU contacted officials last week, according to a district statement.

"These allegations are very serious and the district will utilize its best efforts to ascertain the truth of these matters, as well as to be sure there are procedures" to promptly resolve discrimination and harassment disputes, said district Supt. Jeffrey Hubbard.

Officials described the lawsuit as containing "numerous factual errors and mistakes."

The ACLU has seen a surge in calls from across the state complaining of school bullying based on sexual orientation after the passage of Proposition 8 last fall, which amended the state Constitution to ban gay marriage.

Over the last decade, a number of lawsuits have been brought on behalf of gay students in California: Girls punished for kissing in a Garden Grove high school; students harassed near the Bay Area and intimidated in Los Angeles and San Diego counties; and others beaten, raped or spit on elsewhere, according to the Gay-Straight Alliance Network, a nonprofit youth leadership organization headquartered in San Francisco.

37. NEWS: Gay-themed film cost Oklahoma teacher her job

By Greg Toppo
USA TODAY
March 17, 2009

Gay rights groups are complaining about the firing of a rural Oklahoma high school teacher who lost her job last week after assigning a play about the 1998 death of a gay college student. But the tiny school district says the move came after the teacher held a mock "funeral" for a canceled film production of the play.

The episode began in January, when Debra Taylor showed students at Grandfield High School The Laramie Project, a 2002 film based on the play of the same name, about the murder of Matthew Shepard. The students soon decided to film selected scenes themselves for an in-class project.

Taylor, 50, knew the project was controversial with strong language, but got her principal's permission. A few weeks into it, the principal told her to stop production. After students protested, she held a 20-minute ceremony in a nearby park in which students wrote their thoughts and rolled them into helium balloons, then released them.

38. NEWS: Lebanon schools agree girl may wear prom tux

By Andy Gammill
March 16, 2009
The Indianapolis Star

Lebanon Schools has reversed its policy barring female students from wearing tuxedos if they attend prom after a lawsuit by a senior girl was filed last week.

In a statement, Superintendent Robert L. Taylor said that the issue had been resolved, although the school board will have to vote to accept the agreement at a meeting Tuesday.

"School policy for this year's prom will be that all attendees shall wear appropriate formal attire with no gender-based attire requirements imposed," the statement said. "Female students will be permitted to wear tuxedos if they choose."
