GSA NETWORK NEWS HIGHLIGHT: Harvey Milk Day Bill Under Attack!

Harvey Milk Day Bill Under Attack!

Please contact your legislator to express support for Harvey Milk Day, TODAY!

Anti-gay extremists are gathering at the Capitol in Sacramento today, March 11th, to lobby against the Harvey Milk Day Bill.  Members of the Capitol Resource Institute will lobby "to urge lawmakers to oppose the 'homosexual indoctrination' presented by SB 572, which would create a Harvey Milk Day in public schools . . .," according to the Capitol Morning Report.

Let your elected official know that Harvey Milk Day would offer an opportunity to teach Californians about the LGBT movement and

  • To educate Californians about an extraordinary leader whose courageous work to end discrimination against the LGBT community in the 1970s set the stage for many of the civil rights advances we see today.
  • Given the alarming rates of bullying and violence against LGBT youth in our schools, the bill also aims to give all students a positive role model from the LGBT community who showed that an ordinary person can make an incredible difference when they dare to be themselves.

GSA NETWORK ANNOUNCEMENTS

1. GSA Network and DeFrank Center Leadership Training! (San Jose)

defrankbanner1

This FREE event will be held on Saturday, April 4th from 11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. It includes breakfast and lunch!

So what is a GSA Network Leadership training?
Youth from various GSAs come together for a FUN, interactive, peer-to-peer training that provides students with the skills to fight homophobia and transphobia in schools. Led by other GSA leaders from around Northern California, the training will show students how to start and run a kick-ass GSA.

Topics include
* How to run a GSA meeting
* Outreach, membership building, and diversity
* Understanding gender and sexual orientation
* Understanding laws that protect LGBTQ youth in schools
* How to take action against slurs, harassment, and discrimination in your school.

Young people become activists because they respect themselves and other people too much to let anyone be treated like a second-class citizen. They believe in the basic worth of all human beings, including themselves. That's why so many students, including straight allies, are coming together to fight sexual orientation and gender identity discrimination at their schools. The goals of a student activism group include winning concrete improvements in people's lives, making students aware of their own power, and altering the relations of power. GSAs in California are leading the fight on social change and justice.

This is a great opportunity to network with other GSAs in your area while learning some new skills to strengthen your club.

WHO: GSA members, potential members, and GSA advisors
WHEN: Saturday, April 4th from 11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
WHERE: Billy DeFrank Center
938 The Alameda
San Jose, CA 95126
COST: Free!

GSA Network values the participation of adult allies in our fight against oppression and injustice in schools, and thus welcomes GSA Advisors and other adult allies to the leadership training. That being said, we ask that they help us to maintain the youth focus of this training.

4th ANNUAL QUEER PEOPLE OF COLOR CONFERENCE
April 3 & 4 at UC Davis

The theme of this year's conference is "Building Communities through Art, Action, and Resistance." With this theme, one of our many goals includes finding alternate, new, fun, and exciting ways to resist societal norms that are imposed on LGBTQI communities of color, through embracing the arts, creation, action, and building community. We highly encourage workshop proposals that encompass such a theme- that break away from traditional ways of thinking and embrace somewhat unconventional, nonconformist ideals of community.

8. "Hear It From Us: A Panel of Youth with LGBTQ Parents" COLAGE to Host Forum at LGBT Center (S.F.)

In the wake of Proposition 8 passing in California, LGBTQ families continue to be debated in courtrooms, legislatures, and media. The debate often turns to the question, 'What about the children?' In this critical moment, the public needs to hear from the experts - youth and young adults with LGBTQ parents themselves.

COLAGE Bay Area presents "Hear It From Us: A Panel of Youth with LGBTQ Parents" at the San Francisco LGBT Center Rainbow Room, Tuesday March 24th from 6-7:30pm.

"As people with LGBTQ parents, we need to stand up and speak for ourselves," said Monica Canfield-Lenfest, COLAGE Bay Area Chapter Coordinator. "Youth with LGBTQ parents have a valuable perspective and this panel provides a venue for them to share with the public."

Join us for this opportunity to learn from the experiences of youth with LGBTQ parents. RSVP or more information - [email protected] or call 415-861-5437

OutSpoken by Prince Gomolvilas

A Diversity & Safe Schools Play for Teens

Touring Northern California Schools and Communities
Mondays through Thursdays from April 6th - May 14th 2009

National Day of Silence April 17th 2009

OutSpoken by Prince Gomolvilas is based directly on the voices of young people, and looks at the many reasons teens feel ostracized in school, at home and in their community including race, religion, sexual orientation & body type. This original YouthAware script has been presented to bay area teens since 2005. OutSpoken takes a unique look at issues of diversity from many different perspectives. The play and discussion get teens to talk and think about stereotypes, labels, self-esteem, peer pressure, homophobia and school safety. Through OutSpoken, we hope young people will find new ways to move past their differences to a real place of tolerance and understanding. This is a great program for your GSA or other diversity based club to sponsor on campus. OutSpoken is available to perform up to two times a day at your school. We are available to present community performances of this program on Monday and Tuesday evenings during the run of the tour. Each performance includes a facilitated discussion with the cast and handouts are provided for teachers to continue discussion in the classroom.

You may download a preview copy of the script at http://www.nctcsf.org/outspoken.html .

For more information or to book a tour date for your school, email [email protected] or call (415) 694-6149.

14. Walk Against Rape! April 25th, 2009 (S.F.)

San Francisco Women Against Rape
Walk Against Rape
April 25th, 2009

Walk Against Rape!
Come walk with us for a great cause!

San Francisco Women Against Rape invites you to participate in our 4th annual Walk Against Rape. As part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Walk Against Rape will be held on April 25th, 2009.

The walk is a celebration that empowers survivors, their friends, families and supporters, and serves to break the silence by walking together on the streets against rape, and declare that San Francisco will not tolerate sexual violence.

It is a 3.1 mile walk starting at Justin Herman Plaza at 10am and culminating in a rally at noon in Dolores Mission Park. Walkers will arrive in the park to find festivities such as speakers, performances, vendors, the Clothesline Project on display, prizes for the highest fundraisers, several community organizations offering information and resources, and food and drink.

At SFWAR, we believe that no single individual, organization, foundation, or business alone can stop the epidemic of sexual assault, but by responding as a whole community, we each bring our piece of the solution. This is where your participation counts!

Join us as we make visible what has historically been silenced and invisible.

To register go to www.firstgiving.com/sfwar or register morning of the event.

For more information, please visit our website at www.sfwar.org or call 415-861-2024.

33. 2009 Queer Youth Leadership Awards

2009 Queer Youth Leadership Awards:

* Nominations Open!
* Auditions April 11
* Volunteer & Co-sponsor Opportunities
* QYLA at Scotts Valley High School on May 16

Nominations Accepted Through March 13th

Please consider nominating a Queer Youth, an Ally to Queer Youth, and/or an Organizational Ally to Queer Youth for their outstanding leadership this past year in helping make Santa Cruz County a safer place. Nominations for queer youth and their allies bring hope and reverence to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex and Queer (LGBTIQ) youth and their allies.

It is important to nominate youth and their allies for this year's QYLA because these young people constantly go unrecognized for their work and dedication. No matter how modest the work of a young person might seem, your nomination of them lets them know that they have the entire community supporting them.

Easy to Nominate Online!
To nominate a young person for the Queer Youth Leadership Award or the Ally to Queer Youth Award, visit www.QYLA.org and click on "nominations." For more information about the nominations, please contact [email protected] or call (831) 427-4004.

All nominees and awardees will be honored at the 12th Annual Queer Youth Leadership Awards on Saturday evening, May 16th at Scotts Valley High School. This inspirational and emotional evening event brings the county together to honor the leadership of LGBTIQ youth.

Youth leaders are tenacious young people who either actively and visibly advocate to make schools safer for LGBTIQ youth or embody a role model position, demonstrating that queer youth and their allies can be successful in any field they passionate about. These young people are out and proud, and are making a difference by being true to themselves within a wider culture of isolation for LGBTIQ people. Leaders participate in activism, athletics, the arts, academics, theatre and the sciences.

The Queer Youth Leadership Award:
Given annually to queer youth who are 12 to 18 years of age to acknowledge their accomplishments and the contributions they have made to their communities, whether this be in their homes, schools, religious institutions, athletic or academic teams, or other social groups. Four awardees will receive a cash award of $250, as well as have the opportunity to designate a Queer youth-friendly project or nonprofit organization in their community to receive a $500 donation.

The Ally to Queer Youth Award:
One non-monetary award designed to honor an ally of any age who has made significant contributions to improving the lives of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, or Intersexed youth and youth who have LGBTI family members.

The Organizational Ally to Queer Youth Award:
One non-monetary award designed to honor an organization that has made significant contributions to improving the lives of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, or Intersexed youth in Santa Cruz County.

39. NEWS: High School 'Rent' Production Will Go On

New York Times
By Patrick Healy
February 25, 2009

A California high school production of "Rent: School Edition" that had been canceled this month, over concerns about content and the right of the principal to review the musical's script, has now been approved for an April 2009 production after the principal reviewed the script, school officials announced late Wednesday.

Ron Martin, the drama teacher at Corona Del Mar High School in Newport Beach, had planned for the school's spring musical to be "Rent: School Edition," a slightly toned-down version of the Pulitzer- and Tony-winning musical by Jonathan Larson that ran on Broadway for more than 12 years. But a clash between Mr. Martin and the principal, Fal Asrani, led to the musical's cancellation in mid-February.

"Rent: School Edition" has been licensed to high schools this academic year for the first time; some parents and community members have raised concerns about the content across the country, and a handful of schools have canceled productions as a result. About 40 others plan to mount productions this year.

40. NEWS: Oscar-winner Penn lobbies for Harvey Milk Day

by Carla Marinucci
San Francisco Chronicle
March 3, 2009

Sean Penn, fresh from his Academy Award win as best actor in "Milk," will headline today with state Sen. Mark Leno, D-San Francisco, activist Cleve Jones and friends and family of the late San Francisco supervisor to push for Harvey Milk Day in California.

The 11 a.m. event at the Tosca Cafe - starring Penn, who also has been a Chronicle foreign correspondent - is aimed to lobby for Senate Bill 572 , a measure that closely mirrors one vetoed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger last year.

The bill designates May 22 as "a day of special significance in California," in which public schools would be encouraged "to conduct suitable commemorative exercises on Harvey Milk's life and his contributions to the state," according to the news release.
