GSA NETWORK NEWS HIGHLIGHT:
National Association Kicks Off Regional Work in New England & Announces National Gathering

Currently the National Association of GSA Networks that GSA Network helps to run, has 25 member states spanning all parts of the U.S. Here are some highlights from GSA Networks National Program.

New England Regional Work -
Recently, an effort has been undertaken by the folks in the 5 New England states to increase coordination between state groups such as Outright Vermont, Project 10 East in Boston, Youth Pride in Rhode Island, GLSEN Southern Maine, and True Colors in Connecticut. The effort is exciting in that it will help provide each state with a better understanding of the work that other states are doing, and the opportunity to help reach other reach out to GSAs across New England.  The groups are working on shared strategies and planning a shared event and possibly a New England GSA Regional Summit in the summer.  New England was one of the first places in the country along with California to form GSAs, but the efforts have been largely de-centralized.  The organizations in New England have been working hard to provide support and networking between groups to help build a safe schools movement.    Everyone here at GSA Network in California is excited about the work we're doing with the New England state groups through the National Association.

National Gathering
The National Association also has started planning this year's National Gathering of GSA Networks to be held in Austin, Texas this year. The planning committee is in charge of helping to recruit National Association members and youth to attend,  provide workshops, plan fun events, and help build our movement forward in 2009.  This year the Texas GSA Network is heading up the gathering committee and promises a good time for all. Last year's National Gathering happened in Chicago with fourteen states and one Canadian province attending with about 75 participants.  This year's gathering will be about the same scope and size.  Each year the gathering focuses on a theme to help energize the movement and build collective strategies in GSA Organizing.  Stay tuned for more information about this year's National Gathering which promises to provide a great deal of insight for all California youth and advisors into where the movement is headed nationally.

Replicating GSA Networks Model
For the last four years, GSA Network has been working with both New Mexico and Texas to help replicate the model that GSA Network uses here in California. We are now celebrating our 1-year anniversary of starting our replications with the folks in  Texas who have welcomed a new Texas GSA Network Coordinator to their team, Heather Lennox.  Heather spent a week in California with the staff here, training and learning all about how our programs, curriculum, and events work. She was excited to get to attend the ENS (Expression Not Suppression) conference in the Central Valley and was moved by all the amazing energy that the young people bring to this work.   This year Texas is focusing on building their Youth Councils, hosting the national gathering of GSA Networks, and holding a successful lobby day event in spring 2009.

Starting in 2008, the National Association started a monthly youth call. The call is meant for students from around the country to get together to discuss events and issues that are relevant to organizing in schools.  A number of topics have focused on days of action like Day of Silence and TransAction day.  Other topics have been about Youth Summits, regional networking, and fundraising events for GSA clubs. If you are interested in attending the monthly youth call  which happens the second Saturday of each month, please contact Danielle Askini the national program manager at [email protected].

The National Program experienced a great deal of growth in 2008 and we are all excited to see the growth that will happen in 2009 as we enhance our tools in working with organizations around the country and helping them to organize GSAs and provide insights into what has been successful in California. If you are interested in learning more about the National Program, please contact National Program Manager Danielle Askini.

2. GSA Network and DeFrank Center Leadership Training! (San Jose)

defrankbanner1

This FREE event will be held on Saturday, April 4th from 11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. It includes breakfast and lunch!

So what is a GSA Network Leadership training?
Youth from various GSAs come together for a FUN, interactive, peer-to-peer training that provides students with the skills to fight homophobia and transphobia in schools. Led by other GSA leaders from around Northern California, the training will show students how to start and run a kick-ass GSA.

Topics include
* How to run a GSA meeting
* Outreach, membership building, and diversity
* Understanding gender and sexual orientation
* Understanding laws that protect LGBTQ youth in schools
* How to take action against slurs, harassment, and discrimination in your school.

Young people become activists because they respect themselves and other people too much to let anyone be treated like a second-class citizen. They believe in the basic worth of all human beings, including themselves. That's why so many students, including straight allies, are coming together to fight sexual orientation and gender identity discrimination at their schools. The goals of a student activism group include winning concrete improvements in people's lives, making students aware of their own power, and altering the relations of power. GSAs in California are leading the fight on social change and justice.

This is a great opportunity to network with other GSAs in your area while learning some new skills to strengthen your club.

WHO: GSA members, potential members, and GSA advisors
WHEN: Saturday, April 4th from 11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
WHERE: Billy DeFrank Center
938 The Alameda
San Jose, CA 95126
COST: Free!

GSA Network values the participation of adult allies in our fight against oppression and injustice in schools, and thus welcomes GSA Advisors and other adult allies to the leadership training. That being said, we ask that they help us to maintain the youth focus of this training.

40. NEWS: High school play canceled over possible objections to gay content

Drama teacher at a Newport Beach high school says the principal shut down his production of 'Rent' because of its gay characters. District officials say the principal only asked to read the script.

LA Times

Drama students at Corona del Mar High School were excited to push the envelope with a spring production of the Bohemian love story "Rent."

But the drama teacher at the Newport Beach school says the principal told him to cancel the show because she disapproved of the gay characters in the musical.

Fal Asrani, the school's principal, disputes that she pulled the plug on the production, saying that she only asked to review the script, according to district officials.

Now, amid growing backlash and consternation from some students and members of the gay community, the actors at Corona del Mar High are grudgingly preparing for a very different show: "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown." The drama teacher said it's a safer choice and one sure to pass muster with his boss.

Ron Martin said he chose "Rent," the story of artists struggling in New York City, for the spring musical because he hoped it would be a vehicle for teaching tolerance after overhearing students using homosexual slurs.
