GSA NETWORK NEWS HIGHLIGHT:
Bakersfield Meet-Up Creates Excitement!!!

GSA Network proudly works to network GSA clubs across the state, including conservative areas where there are typically very few opportunities for LGBTQ community-building and grassroots organizing.

bakersfieldmeetlogo

On Saturday, January 10th the Gay-Straight Alliance Network's Central Valley office, along with the help of the SoCal GSA Network office, organized a Bakersfield Meet-up for youth to connect with other LGBTQQI youth in their area and brainstorm ways their GSA clubs can continue efforts to eliminate homophobia and transphobia in their schools.

We were very excited to have 25+ attendees at the meet-up, including 10 new youth who we'd never had the pleasure of meeting.  These youth were extremely excited to learn about topics such as how to start a Gay-Straight Alliance club, GSAs' legal rights, building your GSA membership, as well as forming youth & adult partnerships.

There were so much excitement that, after a brief pizza party and social time, we continued discussing more GSA-related topics such as organizing fun activities for your GSA, conducting a school survey, making your school a Hate-Free Zone, getting involved in Queer Youth Advocacy Day, and the upcoming Central Valley conference, Expression NOT Suppression.

Many youth who attended this event have made plans to attend the Expression NOT Suppression conference in Fresno on February 7 and if you'd like to meet some of these exciting youth from the Bakersfield/Kern county areas, please make your plans to register for Expression NOT Suppression as well and come network with this exciting new group.  Register at http://www.gsanetwork.org/ens
GSA NETWORK ANNOUNCEMENTS

1. Activist CLEVE JONES to speak at UC Berkeley on January 29th - Free! (Bay Area)

You saw him portrayed in the movie, MILK -- now you can meet the real Cleve Jones!

January 29, 2009, 4:30 PM
UC Berkeley Multicultural Center
Heller Lounge, MLK Building
Corner of Telegraph and Bancroft in Berkeley

Come hear first hand about what it was like to work alongside HARVEY MILK.

Cleve's career as an activist began in San Francisco during the turbulent 1970s when pioneer gay rights leader Harvey Milk befriended him. He worked as a student intern in Milk's office while studying political science at San Francisco State University.

In 1983, when AIDS was still a new and poorly understood threat, Jones co-founded the San Francisco AIDS Foundation. Jones conceived the idea of the AIDS Memorial Quilt at a candlelight memorial for Harvey Milk in 1985 and in 1987 created the first quilt panel in honor of his friend Marvin Feldman. The AIDS Memorial Quilt has grown to become the world's largest community arts project.

How can young activists take the lessons of Harvey Milk's life and apply them today?

Come hear Cleve Jones speak about the importance of community and public service.  There will be opportunities for students to find out about internship and volunteer opportunities at local LGBT Organizations.

4. Fresno's LGBTQQI & Supportive Allies Town Hall Meeting

Fresno's LGBTQQI & Supportive Allies Town Hall Meeting
Saturday, January 31st  from 12-3pm
1343 East Barstow Avenue, Fresno (Wesley UMC)
(this is not a religiously affliated event - it is just being hosted at Wesley UMC)

In Barbara Jordan's Democratic convention speech in 1976 she spoke the now infamous line, "If one citizen is unwilling to participate, all of us are going to suffer."  The more voices we have represented from ALL the valuable areas of our community, the better!   If one voice is missing, we are that much less powerful.
Click Here to Listen to the Speech

We will start the day by discussing recent events in the Marriage Equality movement in Fresno and beyond (including this weekend's Equality Summit in LA (attendees from the Valley will offer their report of the summit to those who are interested).

We will discuss local organizing efforts for the LGBT community, as well as, future organizing efforts and needs.  We will do this by breaking in to areas of work that has transpired because of Prop 8 and address the needs of these specific areas (Advocacy/Politics/Families/Educational Outreach/Faith/Straight Allies/Marriage Equality) and we will finally, in a Town Hall fashion work to create a Fresno/Clovis/Reedley/Sanger/Selma/Tulare/Visalia/Madera plan of action to help create a sustainable community that can change the social climate towards the LGBT community in the Central Valley and beyond.

I hope this will serve as an opportunity to save time and energy by getting all voices for equality to at least come to a joint meeting and discuss what can we do proactively to say we will not be put in a closet, we will continue to do more for equal treatment and we will be an organized force to be reckoned with - this is all possible if we are all willing to come to the table and use our energies for change and if we can all figure out a way to work together.

Some possible questions ˆ What is a thoughtful plan of action around upcoming protest, rallies, boycotts, etc., that don't wear others out?  What is our planned response depending on the verdict of the court?  What efforts are currently being organized that need help (Reel Pride, Pride Parade, CCA, IDC, Ellos Latinos, Stonewall Democrats, Fresno Gay Men's Chorus, GSA Network, etc, etc, etc)?  Do we want to again talk about a pride center? etc,? etc.?

If you are a local organization that works with, for, around, etc., the LGBT community in Fresno and would like to have space to offer information about the services/events you provide to our community - please, bring your information to the meeting.

Change DOES NOT happen by itself - Change happens because YOU decide to get involved!

When we Speak, We Shape the World!  What shape are you giving?

If you have any questions, please email [email protected] or [email protected], or call - 559-268-2780 or (559) 862-4559

8. Take a survey about HS and LGBT folks

Researcher needs LGBT young adults who attended high school between 1995 and 2009 to complete 25-minute web survey

Participation sought in a survey of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and trans (LGBT) young adults who attended high school between 1995 and 2009.

The purpose of the study is to inform current school practice regarding the provision of effective resources, policies, and support for LGBT and questioning high school students. We're interested in learning about all types of experiences, regardless of whether or not an individual was "out" during high school.

The survey includes questionnaires about school-based support, experiences of coming out, coping responses and anxiety. It should take no longer than 25 minutes to complete. As a token of thanks, participants may enter into an optional random drawing to win one of four $25 Target.com or Amazon.com gift certificates. Survey responses will remain anonymous.

The survey can be found online at:    http://www.ubresearch.org/TakeSurvey.aspx?SurveyID=96LK9n2

Please feel free to contact Jennifer Piccolo by email [email protected] I'd be happy to answer any questions or concerns you may have.

10. Add verb Productions Seeks Writing From Youth For Queer And Ally Writing Project

Add Verb Productions is seeking performance texts/compositions written by and for queer and allied youth. Adverb ad image

Age exceptions will be made for the 'young at heart' who have the advantage of some perspective, but the majority of accepted pieces will be youth written. Preference will
also be given to high artistic and activist merits.

Add Verb's mission with this project is to create a resource for queer and allied youth who are interested in using performance as a tool for activism,
education, and visibility in their communities - either independently or
through GSAs and other queer campus groups.

The intersection between performance and activism around queer issues
is a powerful, dynamic, and radical space. Theater and performance art
are inherently queer spaces as well, and the queer theatrical
tradition offers a range of influential works that have called people
to action or promoted deeper understanding, with an unparalleled
aesthetic, wit, and fabulousness.

Add Verb aims to add to the existing body of work by focusing on exploring what it takes to be an ally, how allies are created, and illuminate how everyone, in all settings of our lives can be an ally to others.

Submission Deadline is 2/1/09

16. Frameline's Generations Film Workshop (S.F.)
Bringing Youth and Elders Together

SAN FRANCISCO-Frameline's Generations Film Workshop, a free 8-week workshop that teaches media literacy and technical skills while fostering creativity and self-expression among elders and young people, begins February 21, 2009.

This year's Generations Film Workshop will serve approximately 20 LGBT elders (ages 55 and above) and LGBT youth (ages 15-20) who will work in partnership to create their own films that will be exhibited during the San Francisco International LGBT Film Festival. Classes will be held at Ninth Street Independent Film Center on Saturdays and Sundays. Frameline is currently accepting applications from youth and elders for the 2009 Workshop.

Within the queer community, and society at-large, at-risk LGBT youth and elders are often marginalized, overlooked and denied access to technology and full participation in the arts. Both groups are especially susceptible to negative stereotypes and homophobic portrayals of queer life in the media. Frameline believes there is tremendous value in connecting these constituencies in a process of self-exploration and personal development.

Funded by The San Francisco Foundation and Walter & Elise Haas Fund, the Generations Film Workshop seeks to empower LGBT youth and elders of diverse ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds by providing them with the skills, expertise and knowledge to control, create and disseminate media that will represent their unique point of view. Their artistic creations will serve as a powerful teaching tool, educating young and old alike regardless of sexual orientation.

To apply, please download an application from Frameline Generations Application

Send to Frameline Generations, 145 9th St., SF, CA 94103 or email to [email protected].

Applications are due by February 6th.

This CAT will be co-hosted by People Organized to Win Employment Rights (POWER).  POWER was founded by a group of welfare recipients in 1997 so that low-income people could have a space to impact the policies that affect their lives. Since that time, POWER has helped thousands of low-income people find their own voice and find ways to end poverty. Now approaching its 10th year, POWER continues to build the power of low-income people in San Francisco to improve the conditions in their communities and in their workplaces.

About CTWO: The Center for Third World Organizing is a racial-justice organization led by people of color whose mission is to achieve social and economic justice.  Over the last three decades, CTWO has trained and assisted thousands of activists of color and placed hundreds of organizers of color with community and labor organizations across the country. Each year we work with organizations whose staff, boards, and memberships are predominantly low income people of color. Through its existence, CTWO has explored roles of intermediary, trainer, convener, technical assistance provider, mentor, organizer, founder, partner in projects, researcher, and publisher. CTWO has pursued strategies and programs designed to shift the debate in this country around race, working diligently with organizations as vehicles for engaging communities of color to work in shared struggles toward common goals.

22. High School Production of "The Laramie Project" (Burbank)

This is a Saturday evening presentation at John Burroughs High School in
Burbank.

A year ago the students at Burroughs were denied participation in a
student production of "The Laramie Project" at their school because the
principal initially believed that the play was 'too controversial'. The
students went ahead and launched the play themselves at a local
community theater. This story made headlines in the Calendar Section of
the LA Times.
The principal immediately recognized that he had made a mistake but the
news was already out there and the media picked up the story and ran
with it.

Jeff Freeman was asked by the principal this year to direct "The Laramie Project" at Burroughs. The play will debut this coming Saturday, January 31st at 7pm.

  38. NEWS: Court says private school can expel lesbians

by Bob Egelko
San Francisco Chronicle
January 28, 2009

A private religious high school can expel students it believes are lesbians because the school isn't covered by California civil rights laws, a state appeals court has ruled.

Relying on a 1998 state Supreme Court ruling that allowed the Boy Scouts to exclude gays and atheists, the Fourth District Court of Appeal in San Bernardino said California Lutheran High School is a social organization entitled to follow its own principles, not a business subject to state anti-discrimination laws.

"The whole purpose of sending one's child to a religious school is to ensure that he or she learns even secular subjects within a religious framework," Justice Betty Richli said in the 3-0 ruling, issued Monday.

As with the Boy Scouts, she said, the primary function of the school is to instill its values in young people, who are told of its policies when they enroll.

Kirk Hanson, a lawyer for the two girls, said he was disappointed and would talk to them about a possible appeal to the state Supreme Court.
