Historic Election!  Prop 8 Fate Uncertain.  What's Next?

A Bittersweet Election
Yesterday's election was bittersweet.  GSA Network is excited that Barack Obama has been elected as the 44th president of the United States.  We hope his election will usher in a new era of politics in the United States.

However, an estimated 400,000 votes separate yes from no on Prop. 8 - out of 10 million votes tallied. We are waiting to hear from California's secretary of state regarding the tally of any outstanding votes.

What does all of this mean for LGBT youth and the work of GSA clubs? Well, we can hope for the passage of federal legislation in the next four years that may address important LGBT equality issues such as hate crimes, employment non-discrimination, and safe schools.

However, we don't yet know the fate of Proposition 8 in California, the same-sex marriage ban amendment. Currently, Equality California and others including the Secretary of State's office are calling the race too close to call. The No on Prop 8 campaign has determined that, given the incredible gravity of the situation, they will not issue the ultimate call on this election until they have more information (24-48 hours).

However, there is a silver lining.  Yesterday, at least 5 million Californians voted with us to reject discrimination and we thank them for their support for equality. In 2000 2.9 million voted against discrimination in our loss over Proposition 22-we lost that fight by a 22% margin.

Thank You!
We here at GSA Network want to send out our sincerest thanks for all of your hard work, for donating an unprecedented amount to the campaign, for having hard conversations with friends, coworkers, family, and neighbors about Prop 8. Thank you all for your unwavering dedication in the fight for Justice and Equality.  It has been an inspiration for us all to see such dedication and energy from young people, their GSA advisors, families, and communities.

What's Next?
The American Civil Liberties Union, Lambda Legal and the National Center for Lesbian Rights filed a writ petition before the California Supreme Court today urging the court to invalidate Proposition 8 if it passes. The petition charges that Prop 8 is invalid because the initiative process was improperly
used in an attempt to undo the constitution's core commitment to equality for everyone by eliminating a fundamental right from just one group - lesbian and gay Californians.

Speak Out!
The No on 8 Campaign will continue to hold events in areas near you to show support for our fight for marriage equality. To find an event near you visit: http://www.noonprop8.com/events

From us all at GSA Network....thank you! And let the fight for full equality for all continue.

GSA Club Raises Visibility of LGBTQ Latinos and Tackles Discrimination

The GSA club at James A. Foshay Learning Complex in Los
Angeles' South Park neighborhood has achieved a great number of
successes in the year since its founding.  After attending GSA Network's Activist
Camp in June 2008, GSA founder and president Richard Aviles, returned to
Foshay with lots of ideas and ready to help his GSA grow. Since the
beginning of the school year, Foshay's GSA has been launched the Take It
Back Anti-Slur Campaign to educate students, teachers and administrators
on the need for a safe school for all. Richard and his GSA called in GSA
Network to help them plan and launch the campaign. As part of this
campaign, in October, Foshay's GSA raised the visibility of LGBT issues by
participating in school events and commemorating different people during
LGBT History Month. The GSA created a special series of posters
highlighting Latinos in the LGBTQ community.

The GSA has many plans when they come back on track from their vacation.
As part of the continued Take It Back campaign, Foshay's GSA is planning
to organize workshops for both teachers and students on gender identity
issues, the impact of slurs, and the laws that protect students and
teachers against harassment and discrimination. The GSA will also stage
productions of The Laramie Project and The Vagina Monologues. Richard
has plans as well. Besides training more of the younger members of the
GSA so that they can take over once he graduates, Richard is also
planning to run for Prom Queen with support of his GSA. All of these
efforts will hopefully culminate in expanding the GSA to include the
middle school students at Foshay.

Richard is very proud of the growth his GSA has had this school year. He
said, "The many successful things our GSA has done has been the
activities my core members are always enthusiastic about the activities
and we all stick together. I think another good thing about our GSA is
that we have support from our administrators. Despite some challenges,
such as fundraising and keeping up the involvement of the GSA's core members,
Foshay's GSA, with support from GSA Network, is ready to take on
homophobia and transphobia!"

4. 2008 Preventing School Harassment Survey

Take the 2008 Preventing School Harassment Survey

We need your help! You can make a difference in only 20 minutes by improving our understanding of safety and discrimination in our schools.

If you are a student, you can help by filling out the survey yourself and promoting participation among your friends, classmates, and student groups. Take the survey online now!

In partnership with the Gay-Straight Alliance Network, the California Safe Schools Coalition is surveying high school and middle school students across California -- with a focus on LGBT students -- to learn more about safety, discrimination, and harassment in schools. The 2008 Preventing School Harassment Survey is a vital tool for local and statewide efforts to make schools safer for all students by ending discrimination and harassment based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

Please take the survey online today -

For this effort to be successful, we need hundreds of participants from schools all across California. You can help by getting your friends, classmates, GSA and other student groups to participate. It only takes about 20 minutes to complete the survey.

Go to www.casafeschools.org to take the survey online or download a hard copy of the survey. If you have any questions, please contact us at (415) 552-4229 or [email protected].

5. Be on the Youth Empowerment Summit (YES) Steering Committee!

Ever wondered what it would be like to help organize a huge one-day LGBTQA youth conference?  Think you have a fabulous idea for a workshop or keynote speaker?  Did you attend last year and wonder why you weren't put in charge of the dance decorations?

If you answered YES (haha, get it?  GET IT?) to any of these questions, then you should be a member of the YES Steering Committee!

What the heck is the YES conference you ask?  Good question, here's the answer-

The Youth Empowerment Summit (YES) will be held December 6, 2008 from 9 am-5 pm at Everett Middle School in San Francisco, followed by a youth-only dance from 5 pm-8  pm. YES is a FREE conference for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer, questioning, and straight ally youth dedicated to fostering safe schools and youth activism.  YES is structured to focus on giving youth organizers the tools to combat homophobia and transphobia in schools.

The aim of YES is to provide a safe space in which students may come together to explore the multiple oppressions faced by youth, help teachers become advocates and form partnerships with LGBTQQI youth, and become armed with the tools needed to change the world!  As a YES participant, you will make new friends, be exposed to a wealth of valuable resources, feel empowered and supported, and have fun!

Those who are interested in becoming members of the YES steering committee should be able to
1) attend monthly meetings (and at least twice a month when the conference is a month away)
2) be dedicated and dependable and show up consistently to meetings
3) follow through on responsibilities, be ready to engage in a fun and educational planning process
4) walk and chew bubble gum at the same time.  : )

If you're interested, please contact Kiely, the NorCal Program Coordinator, at 415.552.4229 or [email protected].

7. Trans Day of Rememberance, November 20th!

The Transgender Day of Remembrance is November 20th and serves several purposes. It raises public awareness of hate crimes against transgender people, an action that current media doesn't perform. Day of Remembrance publicly mourns and honors the lives of transgender people who might otherwise be forgotten.

It's not too late to get started organizing at your school for Transgender Day of Remembrance.

Now, is the time to push your school and community "beyond the binary" and focus on not only fighting homophobia on your campus, but also fighting transphobia.

What can be done to educate and fight against transphobia?
 Candlelight Vigils / Marches
Discussion forums with local activists, politicians, or school officials
 Performance Actions
Poetry or spoken word art readings
Visual representation of the number of deaths with:
-Cardboard Tomb Stones of Remembered People
-Paper Cutouts of Remembered People
-Body Outline Chalking of Remembered People
 Teach-Ins and Speakers Bureaus
 Art / Photography Displays
Movie screenings (such as "Boys Don't Cry")
Trans 101 trainings for staff or any interested people
Anything else that reflects the grounding principles of breaking gender boundaries

Some ideas for addressing larger issues within the school or community include:
Adding "gender identity and gender expression" to the school's handbook
Having a Trans 101 training for faculty and staff
Having some restrooms be gender neutral and available to people of all genders to use
Educating the school's GSA or diversity group on trans issues and how to be better trans allies

8. Site Visits! Want someone from GSA Network to come visit your GSA?

Is your GSA running out of ideas for meetings?  Is it lacking members?  Does your GSA want a peer-led training on pretty much anything GSA related? Or do you just want someone cool and totally fun to come and sit in on your meeting and share resources?

Well then time to contact the GSA Network!

Here at the GSA Network there are 3 Program Coordinators for every region of CA (Kiely, Daniel, and Robin) that would love to come and visit your GSA and provide resources, feedback, or your own personalized mini training!

Due to budget and time restraints, program coordinators can only travel a certain distance.  However, if we can't make it to your school because it's too far, we're more than happy to answer any questions by phone or email.  We love talking with GSA members!

And our mini trainings are freakin' awesome! These trainings are youth led, so what's better than learning about GSA organizing from another experienced GSA member?

So if you want to be like all the cool youth who are doing it, be sure to contact your local GSA Network Program Coordinator today!

18. The Other Side of the Closet - A Safe Schools Program for Teens

By Ed Roy & Directed by Sara Staley

Touring Northern California from October 27th - December 11th  2008
The following tour dates are still available for the 2008 tour:
Mon 11/10, Tues 11/11, Tues 11/18, Wed 12/3, Mon 12/8, Tues 12/9, Wed 12/10 or Thurs 12/11

Harassment based on actual or perceived sexual orientation remains persistent in schools all over the country. The Other Side of the Closet by Ed Roy is a drama for teens that is produced by the New Conservatory Theatre Center's YouthAware Educational Theatre program, based in San Francisco. This program has been touring to Northern California middle and high schools every fall, since 2000, to educate young people about homophobia, diversity, discrimination, hate crimes, verbal & physical harassment, and about the California School Safety Act (AB-537).

The Other Side of the Closet supports a safe school curriculum where students, teachers and parents can learn about acceptance and respect in an innovative and engaging format. As part of the queer film series at Crossroads, sponsored by FLAG (our gay/straight alliance), we will be having our next movie screening of the year on Wednesday, Nov. 19th, from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m.  We invite you to join us for a great event!

We'll be screening a film called Watercolors, a hot and heartbreaking gay teen romance that was featured at many queer film festivals this year.  We'll also be showing the funny, lesbian musical short film called How Do I Say This? I'm Gay!

Special bonus!-the Directors and both Stars of Watercolors will be with us!

Students and advisors from Gay/Straight alliances are welcome.   It's a great way to meet new friends, or see old ones.  We expect students from many gsa's will be attending--come meet them!

The movie is FREE and free pizza and drinks will be provided!  But please reply and let us know if you might come, so we have an idea of how much pizza to get.
**When you reply, make sure to include your name and the school (if any) you are from, as well as how many people you are bringing-this helps a great deal.

23. Trevor Project Youth Advisory Council

The Trevor Project is developing a new program called The Youth
Advisory Council (YAC).  The YAC serves as a liaison between youth
nationwide and The Trevor Project, as it relates to young people and the
issues surrounding suicide, sexuality and gender identity.  The YAC
submits recommendations to The Trevor Project in an effort to increase
Trevor visibility and best serve the LGBTQ youth population.

The YAC is a program of the Trevor Project comprised of 20 young people
ages 16-24, (to convene monthly via conference call and one time a year
in person) that will advise the organization on outreach and
programmatic efforts targeted at LGBTQ youth.  Participants in the YAC
will have the unique opportunity to have their voices and opinions heard
and implemented into the strategies of a national organization.
