4. GSAs and Allies Help Turn out the Vote!
Proposition 8 would remove the right of same-sex couples to get married by amending the California constitution to read: "marriage is between one man and one woman."

What can you do to help defeat No on 8?

The biggest way for GSAs to help is by getting voters to the polls on Nov. 4th to vote No on Prop 8!
To find out what campaign events are going on in your area check out the No on 8 Website: http://noonprop8.com/

Other ways to Help!
Give. The fight to defeat Prop 8 is going to be hard-won. It's going to take passion, commitment, time, and MONEY! Please Donate.

Volunteer. This effort takes committed individuals working hard at the grassroots level. Be part of the historic campaign to stand up for EQUALITY. With only 40 days until the election, time is running out!
Volunteer with the NO on 8 campaign!   -Click to get plugged in right away!
Get your entire GSA involved, even if you're located in a more rural or outlying area.  If you're interested in phone banking to call undecided voters and persuade them to vote NO, please email: [email protected] to learn how you can phone bank from your own home.

Spread the Word!
http://www.noonprop8.com/messages

Talk. Talk to your friends, family, coworkers, fellow church-goers, neighbors, classmates -- anyone and everyone -- about Voting No on Prop 8. You have a wide circle of influence, use it! By simply talking to people, you increase awareness about the issue in your community and can help influence public opinion.

Write. One of the most effective ways to create change and influence people is by telling your personal story. Write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper, or submit an article to a newsletter or blog and tell your community why Prop 8 is so harmful to you and those you love.

5. 2008 Preventing School Harassment Survey

Take the 2008 Preventing School Harassment Survey

We need your help! You can make a difference in only 20 minutes by improving our understanding of safety and discrimination in our schools.

If you are a student, you can help by filling out the survey yourself and promoting participation among your friends, classmates, and student groups. Take the survey online now!

In partnership with the Gay-Straight Alliance Network, the California Safe Schools Coalition is surveying high school and middle school students across California -- with a focus on LGBT students -- to learn more about safety, discrimination, and harassment in schools. The 2008 Preventing School Harassment Survey is a vital tool for local and statewide efforts to make schools safer for all students by ending discrimination and harassment based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

Please take the survey online today -

For this effort to be successful, we need hundreds of participants from schools all across California. You can help by getting your friends, classmates, GSA and other student groups to participate. It only takes about 20 minutes to complete the survey.

Go to www.casafeschools.org to take the survey online or download a hard copy of the survey. If you have any questions, please contact us at (415) 552-4229 or [email protected].

6. Be on the Youth Empowerment Summit (YES) Steering Committee!

Ever wondered what it would be like to help organize a huge one-day LGBTQA youth conference?  Think you have a fabulous idea for a workshop or keynote speaker?  Did you attend last year and wonder why you weren't put in charge of the dance decorations?

If you answered YES (haha, get it?  GET IT?) to any of these questions, then you should be a member of the YES Steering Committee!

What the heck is the YES conference you ask?  Good question, here's the answer-

The Youth Empowerment Summit (YES) will be held December 6, 2008 from 9 am-5 pm at Everett Middle School in San Francisco, followed by a youth-only dance from 5 pm-8  pm. YES is a FREE conference for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer, questioning, and straight ally youth dedicated to fostering safe schools and youth activism.  YES is structured to focus on giving youth organizers the tools to combat homophobia and transphobia in schools.

The aim of YES is to provide a safe space in which students may come together to explore the multiple oppressions faced by youth, help teachers become advocates and form partnerships with LGBTQQI youth, and become armed with the tools needed to change the world!  As a YES participant, you will make new friends, be exposed to a wealth of valuable resources, feel empowered and supported, and have fun!

Those who are interested in becoming members of the YES steering committee should be able to
1) attend monthly meetings (and at least twice a month when the conference is a month away)
2) be dedicated and dependable and show up consistently to meetings
3) follow through on responsibilities, be ready to engage in a fun and educational planning process
4) walk and chew bubble gum at the same time.  : )

If you're interested, please contact Kiely, the NorCal Program Coordinator, at 415.552.4229 or [email protected].

7. Site Visits! Want someone from GSA Network to come visit your GSA?

Is your GSA running out of ideas for meetings?  Is it lacking members?  Does your GSA want a peer-led training on pretty much anything GSA related? Or do you just want someone cool and totally fun to come and sit in on your meeting and share resources?

Well then time to contact the GSA Network!

Here at the GSA Network there are 3 Program Coordinators for every region of CA (Kiely, Daniel, and Robin) that would love to come and visit your GSA and provide resources, feedback, or your own personalized mini training!

Due to budget and time restraints, program coordinators can only travel a certain distance.  However, if we can't make it to your school because it's too far, we're more than happy to answer any questions by phone or email.  We love talking with GSA members!

And our mini trainings are freakin' awesome! These trainings are youth led, so what's better than learning about GSA organizing from another experienced GSA member?

So if you want to be like all the cool youth who are doing it, be sure to contact your local GSA Network Program Coordinator today!

12. The Other Side of the Closet

Harassment based on actual or perceived sexual orientation remains persistent in schools all over the country. The Other Side of the Closet by Ed Roy is a drama for teens that is produced by the New Conservatory Theatre Center's YouthAware Educational Theatre program, based in San Francisco. This program has been touring to Northern California middle and high schools every fall, since 2000, to educate young people about homophobia, diversity, discrimination, hate crimes, verbal & physical harassment, and about the California School Safety Act (AB-537).

The Other Side of the Closet supports a safe school curriculum where students, teachers and parents can learn about acceptance and respect in an innovative and engaging format. This is a great program for your GSA or other diversity based club to sponsor on campus.  We are also available to present community performances of this program on Monday and Tuesday evenings during the run of the tour. Each performance includes a facilitated discussion with the cast and handouts are provided for teachers to continue discussion in the classroom

25. NEWS: Students harassed for being gay win in court

by Bob Egelko
San Francisco Chronicle
October 11, 2008

School officials in California must investigate complaints of anti-gay harassment and take action to protect the victims, a state appeals court ruled Friday in upholding $300,000 in damages to two San Diego County students who said administrators ignored their reports of name-calling, vandalism and death threats.

Evidence supports a jury's conclusion that the principal and assistant principal of Poway High School were "deliberately indifferent to the ongoing anti-gay peer harassment" that Joseph Ramelli and Megan Donovan suffered in their years at the school, said the Fourth District Court of Appeal in San Diego.

Even after Ramelli reported in his junior year that he was being called names every day and had been spat on and shoved into lockers, had food thrown at him and found a threatening note on his car, the administrators failed to investigate and instead advised him to "minimize his interaction with the general school population," the court said.

"They just told me to stay out of the quad," said Ramelli, now 22 and living in Santa Cruz. Instead of looking into their complaints and acting to protect them, he said, the school decided that he and Donovan should spend their senior years in a home-study program.

26. NEWS: Movie Review: A High School Student With a Beard

By NATHAN LEE
October 17, 2008
New York Times

Tru (Najarra Townsend) has two mommies - one black (Cynda Williams), one white (Alexandra Paul), both lesbians - and they're all living happily ever after. Or were, at least, until they left San Francisco.

Transplanted to a conservative suburb in Southern California, Tru is suddenly confronted with a local phenomenon as unfamiliar as year-round sunshine: homophobia in her high school. She starts a relationship with Lodell (Matthew Thompson), the handsome high school quarterback who turns out to be, whaddya know, a gay man on the down low. To shield Lodell from his bigoted peers, or at least his own ego issues, Tru grudgingly agrees to be his beard.

Drama ensues as Tru, living up to her righteous name, establishes a gay-straight alliance at school where assorted bi-curious types mingle, along with an actual gay named Walter (Tye Olson) and the superhot, suspiciously stylish but only apparently gay Trevor (Jake Abel).

28. NEWS: Vista: School board stays out of gay marriage debate

Trustees decide against taking a stance on Prop. 8

By STACY BRANDT
October 17, 2008
North County Times

VISTA ---- In a lively meeting that drew more than 100 people, the Vista Unified school board decided Thursday night to stay out of the debate over same-sex marriages.

By a 3-2 vote, school district trustees declined to take a position on Proposition 8, an initiative that would amend the state constitution to define marriage as only between a man and a woman.

Board President Jim Gibson asked trustees to pass a resolution in support of Prop. 8 and board member Stephen Guffanti joined him in backing the resolution. The rest of the panel said the board shouldn't take a position on any proposition.
