+++++++++++++++ GSA NETWORK HIGHLIGHT+++++++++++++++

Working to End Gender Segregation at Graduation!

Here at the GSA Network we try to make campaigns as easy as possible.  After all, fighting oppressions on a daily basis is hard work! That's why GSA Network has handy-dandy resource sheets, campaign manuals (Beyond the Binary: A Toolkit for Gender Identity Activism in Schools, Make it Real: AB 537 Student Organizing manual, and Take it Back: A Manual for Fighting Slurs on Campus), easy to read curriculum guides that break down the campaign manuals, and staff who are willing to offer campaign support at a moments notice.

However, some GSA members start their own campaigns that the GSA Network doesn't have manuals or guides.  For instance, Lyla Foley at Albany High School, found it incredibly messed up that her school color-coded graduation gowns on the basis of sex- white for girls and red for boys.

As a member of GSA Network Youth Council, all youth must engage in campaign work that will positively affect their campus.  Lyla, a Northern California Youth Council member, decided to take her school head on and campaign for gender-neutral graduation gowns.

Lyla states, "I am campaigning in my school to get the grad robes to be gender neutral, and have made some serious progress."

Although the GSA Network doesn't have campaign guides that readily address graduation gowns and color-coding on the basis of sex, we do have four campaign guides that GSAs can easily use to start raising awareness about LGBTQ issues on their campuses.

For a list of GSA Network campaigns and helpful resource sheets, please visit this link: http://www.gsanetwork.org/resources/index.html.

Keep in mind that all of the GSA Network Program Coordinators are more than happy to help with input, ideas, and suggestions for your campaigns!  Give us a call at the office (415.552.4229) or shoot us an email.

Lyla wasn't about to let her school regulate graduation gowns on the basis of the gender binary system and she decided to do something about it.  What are you going to do to change the climate of your school?

6. GSA Network Rallies Against State Education Budget Cuts

On Thursday, May 15th, GSA Network staff travelled to Sacramento to attend and support the Campaign for Quality Education's Student Rally! More than 2,000 students and supporters rallied against the state education budget cuts at the State Capitol.

As a youth leadership organization, GSA Network feels strongly about working to fight the school budget cuts, which impact our LGBTQ and allied youth, just as it affects all youth in California.  In particular, if schools don't have adequate funding, it makes it even more difficult for them to implement the laws that protect LGBTQ youth.

It was exciting to see the number of LGBTQ and allied youth, including those who just recently attended Queer Youth Advocacy Day, who attended the rally against the education budget cuts.

Students, parents, teachers and community members from  Southern California (South Los Angeles, Orange County, Long Beach, and San Diego), the Bay Area (Oakland, San Francisco, Berkeley), West Contra Costa  (Richmond, Pinole and San Pablo), the South Bay (San Jose), and the Central Valley (Fresno and Stockton) kept the energy up during the rally despite 100-degree weather.

There were amazing student emcees and speakers from across the state who represented unified youth, parent and teacher voices.  And both State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell and Senate President Pro-Tem Darrell Steinberg-who's made high school reform his highest priority, spoke as well.

Student delegation teams, along with allies, conducted over 40 delegation visits with staff of key legislators to share our concerns about the budget and share CQE's three long-term education finance principles:

- Adequate funding for all students to meet high standards.
- Targeted funding to provide more funding to the students who depend most on our education system.
- Stable funding to ensure the quality of education does not fluctuate.

GSA Network encourages each and everyone of you to contact your legislators and let them know that budget cuts in schools are not good for California students!

8. BURROUGHS HIGH GAY-STRAIGHT ALLIANCE TO STAGE PRODUCTION OF THOUGHT-PROVOKING PLAY, "THE LARAMIE PROJECT" (Burbank)

Production of play part of students' efforts to create local dialogue around Lesbian, Gay Bisexual and Transgendered issues in the City of Burbank.

Burbank, Calif., May 12, 2008 - The Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) of John Burroughs High School is staging the thought-provoking play The Laramie Project by Moises Kaufman. The Laramie Project deals with the 1998 hate-driven murder of openly gay Matthew Shepard in Laramie, Wyoming by two young men. Burroughs High's GSA is staging The Laramie Project to begin a dialogue in the city of Burbank around issues of violence against Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered youth.

The initiative for staging The Laramie Project came from a group of students in Burroughs High School's Drama program and Gay-Straight Alliance who wanted to perform The Laramie Project as the annual spring play. Their hope was to use the beautiful and inspirational story to start conversations between students and teachers at their school. Unfortunately, school administrators felt that the play would be divisive and create controversy. With that justification, school administrators prevented the Drama program and the GSA from staging The Laramie Project at Burroughs High School. Four students - Nicole Carothers, Madison DiNapoli, Amanda Stone, and Jenna Tamimi - refused to be silenced and decided to stage the play on their own outside of school. They received a grant, held auditions, and found a theatre generous enough to share its facilities.  The process however has been a challenge.  Since the school administration is not supporting the play, the students have been left on their own to direct and produce the play. They are determined not to allow ignorance to hinder art and dialogue.  The students putting on the play hope to show school administrators that The Laramie Project will actually bring the community together in a constructive way.  They feel that they have the right and an obligation to put on the play and the people of their community have the right to see it.  The students are using the stage to spread tolerance and unity.

Burroughs High's Gay-Straight Alliance is receiving support in staging The Laramie Project from LifeWorks Mentoring, GSA Network, Gay and Lesbian Allied Administrators, and Parents, Friends of Lesbians And Gays.

The Laramie Project will be staged on Thursday, May 29th & Friday, May 30th at 8 pm. General Admission is $10 and Student Admission is $7. It will be performed at the Colony Theatre, 555 N. 3rd Street, Burbank, CA 91502.

9. COLAGE Releases Groundbreaking Resource on Transgender Families

Exclusive Guide for People with Transgender Parents

San Francisco, May 18, 2008 - COLAGE is proud to announce the release of its Kids of Trans Resource Guide, the first of its kind, which was written by and for people with transgender parents. While many transgender people have children, very few resources exist for transgender parents and their families. Having a transgender parent can often feel isolating or challenging. This crucial resource will provide the growing community of children, youth, and adults with one or more transgender parent(s) much needed information about their experience.

"When my father explained that (s)he was becoming a woman, (s)he handed me a pamphlet about transgender issues," says Monica Canfield-Lenfest, COLAGE Kids of Trans Fellow. "I really wanted a pamphlet for me.  Ten years later, that resource finally exists."

The Kids of Trans Resource Guide offers a range of perspectives with valuable quotes from the experts themselves - people of all ages with transgender parents. This invaluable guide seeks to provide an understanding of transgender issues specifically for the children of transgender people with basic vocabulary and concepts, frequently asked questions, and what to expect during a parent's gender transition. We have included these additional resources: Transition Tips for Parents, Finding Support and Community, Legal Q&A for Kids of Trans Parents, and an expanded Transgender Family Resource List.  In addition, the guide features frank discussions about family changes, challenges to acceptance, and the benefits of having a trans parent.

"Even if my family structure is a little bit different from the average family (MTF transgender parent and a biological mom), we still do everything other families do. We enjoy each other's company, eat dinner together, talk, and go out to eat, among much more," says 13-year old Gretchen C. "The way my family is does not change who I am. Though, it does make me more accepting of different types of people and situations."

The Kids of Trans Resource Guide was authored by Monica Canfield-Lenfest and is the culmination of her eight-month Kids of Trans Fellowship at COLAGE from October 2007 through May 2008. Copies are available by donation from COLAGE. An electronic version will also be available at http://www.colage.org.

Transgender and gender non-conforming parents, family members, people with transgender parents, teachers, therapists, and LGBT community centers are all encouraged to read this valuable new resource.

About COLAGE

COLAGE is a national movement of children, youth and adults with one or more lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and/or queer parent(s). We build community and work toward social justice through youth empowerment, leadership development, education and advocacy.

Harassment based on actual or perceived sexual orientation remains persistent in schools all over the country. The Other Side of the Closet by Ed Roy is a drama for teens that is produced by the New Conservatory Theatre Center's Youth Aware Educational Theatre program, based in San Francisco. This program has been touring to Northern California middle and high schools every fall, since 2000, to educate young people about homophobia, diversity, discrimination, hate crimes, verbal & physical harassment, and about the California School Safety Act (AB-537). The Other Side of the Closet supports a safe school curriculum where students, teachers and parents can learn about acceptance and respect in an innovative and engaging format. This is a great program for your GSA or other diversity based club to sponsor on campus.  We are also available to present community performances of this program on Monday and Tuesday evenings during the run of the tour.
