Wishing You a Happy and Blessed
Easter and Passover
I'm sure we all know there could be no Easter without Passover, and I thought it would be interesting to examine some of the elements that are the same in these two celebrations. I know they don't look anything alike, but they really do have many things in common. In doing this comparison, I like to remind myself Jesus was a Jewish man, not a Christian. It wasn't until the Apostle Paul started referring to believers as "Christians" that this term stuck to describe the followers of Jesus. (In respect for my Jewish friends, I will be using this spelling for G-d.) Both celebrations are rooted in prophesy concerning deliverance; the Hebrew people from slavery in Egypt and the Christian believers from the penalty of sin - eternal death. Genesis 15:13 - 16 tells of God's prophetic words for the yet developed nation of Israel, "Then the Lord said to Abram, "Know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a foreign country. They will be enslaved and oppressed for four hundred years. But I will execute judgment on the nation that they will serve. Afterward they will come out with many possessions. But as for you, you will go to your ancestors in peace and be buried at a good old age. In the fourth generation your descendants will return here, for the sin of the Amorites has not yet reached its limit."
Passover is the fulfillment of this prophesy. It took a leader willing to submit to the power of G-d to perform the miracle of delivering the Hebrew people form Egypt, and Moses was the man for the job. The passion of the Christ is also rooted in Old Testament prophesy. It is amazing how accurate Isaiah's comments are about an event that hadn't happened yet, Isaiah 53 - "He was led away after an unjust trial -but who even cared? Indeed, he was cut off from the land of the living; because of the rebellion of his own people he was wounded. They intended to bury him with criminals, but he ended up in a rich man's tomb, because he had committed no violent deeds, nor had he spoken deceitfully. Though the Lord desired to crush him and make him ill, once restitution is made, he will see descendants and enjoy long life, and the Lord's purpose will be accomplished through him. Having suffered, he will reflect on his work, he will be satisfied when he understands what he has done. "My servant will acquit many, for he carried their sins. So, I will assign him a portion with the multitudes, he will divide the spoils of victory with the powerful, because he willingly submitted to death, and was numbered with the rebels, when he lifted up the sin of many and intervened on behalf of the rebels." Isaiah could not have been more accurate concerning the events surrounding the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. He wrote these words as if he were an eye witness. The word Pesach or Pascha, meaning "passing over" or "protection," is used by both Jewish and Christian faiths. It is a Jewish holy day and festival commemorating G-d sparing the Hebrews when he killed the first born of Egypt, and is the seven day Feast of the Unleavened Bread (Passover) commemorating the Exodus from Egypt and the liberation of the Hebrew people from slavery. In Christianity, the Pascha or Paschal celebration is centered on the Passion of the Christ - Jesus' death and resurrection, which took place during Passover. The Paschal homily or sermon of St John Chrysostom is read aloud in every Orthodox church on Easter morning or Pascha, in the Eastern Orthodox Church and Eastern Catholic Churches this is called "the Great and Holy Pascha of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ." This lovely homily gives the invitation to any and all to come and partake of G-d's joy and provisions. In both faiths, death will "passover" the people who follow G-d's protective ordinances. Let there be LIGHT! In both faiths candle lighting ceremonies are considered a sacred act of worship. Every Sabbath or Shabbat, candles are light at 18 minutes before sundown by the woman of the home to usher in the blessings of G-d. The lighting of these candles are considered a Mitzvah (spiritual good deed) for the women of the household. The flame of the Paschal candle symbolizes Christ's illuminating light, and his presence in the midst of his people. The Paschal candle is sometimes referred to as the "Easter candle" or the "Christ candle." The tall white candle in many ways signifies the Divine pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night that lead the Israelites out of slavery and on their journey to the Promised Land. Both refer to a Lamb - In the first Passover we read that Moses instructed the Hebrew people to prepare (kill) a year old male lamb without blemish, and brush some of its blood on the door posts - top and sides using the branch of a hyssop plant. They were to roast this lamb and eat all of it that night. Anything left over was to be burnt up with fire. The Jewish sacrificial system would later be setup with these same ordinances - the whole sacrifice was to be eaten by the priests or burned on the Alter. The Exodus story tells us when darkness fell on Egypt, the death angel passed through the land and all first born of men and animals died in the households that were not protected by the blood of the lamb - Exodus 12. This ceremony was a perpetual covenant between G-d and the Jewish people, and has been celebrated for thousands of years.
It was natural for Jesus to celebrate Passover every year, because he was Jewish. Just as Moses knew he was the "anointed one" to deliver G-d's people from their sufferings in Egypt, Jesus also knew he was chosen to be the anointed one - the Messiah. "Mashiach is the Hebrew word for Messiah. The word Messiah in English means a saviour or a "hoped-for deliverer". The word Mashiach in Hebrew actually means "anointed". In Biblical Hebrew the title Mashiach was bestowed on somebody who had attained a position of nobility and greatness." (Nissan Dovid Dubov) In the Christian faith, Jesus fulfill this status of honor by fulfilling Messianic prophecy. Jesus was crucified and died before the start of Passover, just like the Passover lamb. His blood was shed as atonement for deliverance from sin, once and for all. This act of obedience or mitzvah gave him the position of righteousness the law demanded, so he could mediate a lasting peace between G-d and man. A cup is used as a focal point in both celebrations. In Judaism, a cup or place setting for Elisha is always part of the Seder. It signifies the faith in the coming Messiah, the anointed one who will lead the Jews back to their land. Elisha is the prophet who will announce the arrival of the Messiah. In recent years a cup is set for Miriam also. This is to honor the valiant women leaders in Jewish history. I have no doubt; Messiah will come, just as G-d promised! On that day, every Jewish person will know it and rejoice. The cup used in the Last Supper has become the object of legend - the Holy Grail. It was with a common wine cup used at Passover that Jesus stepped into the role of the Passover lamb. Luke 22:19 says, "Then he took bread, and after giving thanks he broke it and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me." And in the same way he took the cup after they had eaten, saying, "This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood. It was not a mystery to what Jesus was referring when he presented himself in this manor - he was proclaiming to be G-d's protection against eternal death - the Passover Lamb. Victory sweet victory! Don't you just love a good ending? I do. Both these stories end in victory. The Hebrew people left Egypt loaded with gold, silver and other precious goods, just like G-d said! He also inflected judgment on Egypt for enslaving the Hebrews by sending 10 Plagues. Most of us know the ten plagues as the beginning scenes in the movie the Ten Commandments, staring Charlton Heston. For Christians, their story doesn't end with a death, but with glorious life. Luke 24: 1 - 9 says, "Now on the first day of the week, at early dawn, the women went to the tomb, taking the aromatic spices they had prepared. They found that the stone had been rolled away from the tomb, but when they went in, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While They were perplexed about this, suddenly two men stood beside them in dazzling attire. The Women Were terribly frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, "Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here, but has been raised! Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men,and be crucified, and on the third day rise again."Then the women remembered his words, and when they returned from the tomb they told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. At this season of Passover and Easter, let's remember what G-d has done - past - present and future, and during our celebrations, remember to share this good news with others.
Here are a couple fun links to look deeper into these celebrations.

Some of these programs will not apply to you now, but you never know when the time will be right. =============================================================
Twitter Shorthand by Lorrie Morgan-Ferrero, Copywriting Strategist This quote has been attributed to Hemingway, Cicero, Voltaire, Mark Twain, and Blaise Pascal. But whoever wrote, "If I more time, I'd have written you a shorter letter" understood it's more challenging to write short copy than long copy. This has never been more true than with the phenomenon of Twitter at www.Twitter.com. Twitter is a social networking and micro-blogging service that works kind of like instant messaging. You choose who you Follow or allow in your inner circle. Others choose to Follow or Unfollow you based on whatever criteria they have. Then you communicate via text messages of up to 140 characters long (including punctuation and names) called Tweets. Think of it as a giant cocktail party where you contribute to other conversations, share relevant information, and at times include mindless babble. As my good friend, Scott Stratten www.twitter.com/unmarketing Tweets, "Take 5 mins to read other tweets and comment/reply/retweet. Nothing about you. Build, interact, give." Sometimes keeping your Tweets under the character limit can be tough, though. So I put together a list of some of the more shorthand so you can work in as many words as possible in your Tweets.
Instead of 'you' use 'u'
Instead of 'and' use '&'
Instead of 'your' use 'ur'
Instead of 'for' use '4'
Instead of 'to' or 'too' use '2'
Instead of 'before' use 'b4'
Instead of 'favorite' use 'fave'
Instead of 'great' use 'gr8'
Instead of 'later' use 'l8r'
Instead of 'people' use 'peeps' or 'ppl'
Instead of 'are' use 'r'
Instead of 'please' use 'plz'
Instead of 'thanks' use 'thx'
Instead of 'with' use 'w' Can it be a contraction? Instead of 'I will do __' use 'I'll do __' Do you really need that pronoun? Instead of 'I hope __' use 'Hope __' Get rid of 'that' and 'the' whenever possible Of course what you choose to Tweet about is even more important than the length of your Tweet. If you want to learn "How to Use Twitter to Build Your List" I'll be giving a full disclosure presentation. Free to my Sterling Inner Circle members. Find out more at www.redhotcopy.com/sterling.htm.
