Personality
Principles

August 2008

  Greetings Everyone!

The Dog Days of Summer...

are upon us.  August is a month where the heat can suck the life right out of us!   But, it is also a month for making new plans, the starting of a new school year, wrapping our brains around our calendars, and taking that last minute trip before settling down for the long haul.  Before you know it, we will be thinking "Christmas." (scary thought!)

Personality Board

Miss Maggie Mae Underfoot

In keeping with the spirit of dog days, we have added a puppy to our household this summer. I have been threatening to get a dog for years now, but my travel schedule has been too crazy to think of training a puppy, but now that I'm home more - it's time!  I found this darling fur ball on the Internet - it was love at first sight!  I looked at hundreds of pictures of cute dogs, but this one pulled on my heart.  I find it interesting how connections are made without having to be there in person.  We arranged a meeting with the breeder, paid for the puppy, and the fun began!    Maggie is a "Designer Mutt" which means she is a cross bread - Silky Terrier/Maltese mix.  I highly recommend this
mix.  She's cute, quiet, and intelligent.  She is almost house broke and we've only had her for two weeks.  I'm sure she will make an appearance at APT this year.

There were several reasons I decided to put myself through the pains of training a puppy -- I was finding myself being pulled into a mild depression - there wasn't anything to be depressed about.  My business is moving in the right direction, my husband got a promotion, my son's wedding was wonderful - all seemed right in the world, so what was my problem?!  Simple - I had put my nose to the grindstone without taking the breaks I needed and now
that my children are  grown there isn't any physical touching going on either.

Because my office is in my home, I don't get the physical interaction that comes with a job  located in an office or retail environment.  For a Playful Sanguine who is working from home, this can be a problem, meeting our emotional needs will take a little more work than normal.  I lacked sunshine -distraction - hugs - and fun.  My mother has a saying, "All work and no play, makes George a dull boy,"  I was loosing my sparkle! And, a Playful
Sanguine without sparkle, is like a day without sunshine!

Having this little "distraction" has interfered with getting my work done, (My apologies to anyone waiting to hear from me.) but I feel so much better now that I have had to take mandatory breaks, stand in the sun-shine waiting for Miss Maggie to pee or just play, and soaking up some vitamin D -- what a big difference this has made in my thought life, not to mention the fact that the emotional needs of Affection, Attention and Acceptance "As Is," are being met through this little fur ball. She LOVES me!

(As I type this article, she's sitting on my feet - hence the name - Underfoot.)

I don't think everyone needs an animal to meet their emotional needs, but I would like all of us to be more aware when our own emotional health begins to wain and do something about it.  As Personality Consultants/Trainers, we should practice what we teach. ;0)

Today's Prayer
Today's Prayer
Dear God, I don't want to strive against you by my own self-efforts. I want to totally depend on you. Please increase my faith. Forgive my unbelief. James (1:5) tells me that if I lack wisdom, let me ask of you--God that gives to all people liberally--and it will be given to me. Lord, give me wisdom and grace and strong faith. I pray for my friends who need your wisdom and power in their lives. Please reach down and left them up by the power of Your Holy Spirit; draw them unto you; change their lives for their good and Your glory. These things I ask with a loving heart. In the name of Jesus, amen.

Questions are coming in!
As opportunities come our way, we may have questions like, "How do I incorporate the personality information into my materials."  or, "Is there any research on _________?"

================================
Question:
""Is there any other information I should be studying that would help me become a better trainer/consultant?"
Answer:
YES!  If we are going to be the best at what we do, we need to study.

There are MANY personality/temperament systems on the market and it help to know how each of them work, which ones are alike, and why you have chosen to use this system.  Because this is a very important topic, we cover this in more depth at APT as one of our regular sessions.

First, let's identify three of the major systems on the market and some of their market uses.  We'll cover more systems at a later time.

Myers Briggs Type Indicator, MBTI:  http://www.personalitypathways.com/type_inventory2.html
The typology model originated by Jung (and further developed by Briggs and Myers) regards personality type as similar to left or right handedness: individuals are either born with, or develop, certain preferred ways of thinking and acting. The MBTI sorts some of these psychological differences into four opposite pairs, or "dichotomies," with a resulting 16 possible psychological types.

Dichotomies

Extraversion - Introversion
Sensing - iNtuition
Thinking - Feeling
Judging - Perceiving

The 16 different types are often referred to by an abbreviation of four letters, the initial letters of each of their four type preferences (except in the case of iNtuition), for instance:
ESTJ - Extraversion, Sensing, Thinking, Judging
INFP - Introversion, iNtuition, Feeling, Perceiving
And so on for all 16 possible type combinations.
The indicator is frequently used in the areas of career counseling, pedagogy, group dynamics, employee training, leadership training, life coaching, executive coaching, marriage counseling, Workers' compensation claims and personal development.

Enneagram:   http://www.enneagraminstitute.com
The Enneagram of Personality Types is a modern synthesis of a number of ancient wisdom traditions, but the person who originally put the system together was Oscar Ichazo. The Enneagram's structure may look complicated, although it is actually simple. The nine points on the circumference are also connected with each other by the inner lines of the Enneagram. Note that points Three, Six, and Nine form an equilateral triangle.

An Over view of the Nine Personality Types
Type One is principled, purposeful, self-controlled, and perfectionistic.
Type Two is demonstrative, generous, people-pleasing, and possessive.
Type Three is adaptive, excelling, driven, and image-conscious.
Type Four is expressive, dramatic, self-absorbed, and temperamental.
Type Five is perceptive, innovative, secretive, and isolated.
Type Six is engaging, responsible, anxious, and suspicious.
Type Seven is spontaneous, versatile, distractible, and scattered.
Type Eight is self-confident, decisive, willful, and confrontational.
Type Nine is receptive, reassuring, agreeable, and complacent.

We can use the Enneagram to understand a multitude of business applications, relationships, parenting, cultural differences, and personal growth, marriage, career, and legal counseling, sports coaching, lawyer and jury selection, politics (and the character of officeholders and those running for office), and various dimensions of cultural studies. These are just some of the areas in which people are either currently applying the Enneagram or seeking more information about how to do so.

D.I.S.C.:  http://www.onlinediscprofile.com
The D.I.S.C. personality report or inventory, developed by William Moulton Marston, profiles four primary behavioral styles, each with a very distinct and predictable pattern of observable behavior.
Dominance: To the point, decisive and bottom line oriented. These people tend to be independent and results driven. They are strong-willed people who enjoy challenges, taking action, and immediate results.

Influence:
Optimistic and outgoing. They tend to be highly social and out going. They prefer participating on teams, sharing thoughts, and entertaining and energizing others.

Steadiness:
Empathetic & Cooperative. These people tend to be team players and are supportive and helpful to others.  They prefer being behind the scene, working in consistent and predictable ways. They are often good listeners and avoid change and conflict

Conscientiousness:
Concerned, Cautious & Correct. These people are often focused on details and quality. They plan ahead, constantly check for accuracy, and what to know "how" and "why".

DISC is used for personal growth and development, training, coaching and managing of individuals, groups, teams, and organizations.

Quotes of the Month

You can vitally influence your life from within by auto-suggestion. The first thing each morning, and the last thing each night, suggest to yourself specific ideas that you wish to embody in your character and personality. Address such suggestions to yourself, silently or aloud, until they are deeply impressed upon your mind.

Information and Tests
As I have said earlier, I want to introduce you to some of the people and programs I have had the privilege to encounter over the past few years.  Some of these programs will not apply to you now, but you never know when the time will be right.  I feel it's better to be exposed to new ideas and programs long before you need them, so when the time is right, you're not making a mad dash to find them -- you'll know where to look.

Your e-Coach

What would you want in your life if everything were possible? What did you dream about when you were little? What is important to you? What makes you happy? When you lead yourself it is crucial that you uncover goals buried within your inmost self, your heart and soul. When you do, a new energy will emerge, giving you the desire and the strength to create a life full of self-expression.

Every one of us is unique, and it is important that you set goals that align with your own dreams. Only then will your goals help you in creating the life you really want. No matter your age, giving life to your core goals will add to your everyday life a richness that's not possible unless you're pursuing what's truly important to you.

Never abandon a goal that resonates deeply in your heart. That's the same as saying "No" to life. Don't give up on anything that really excites you, even if it looks impossible at first. And don't underestimate the tremendous power that comes from within when you truly believe in your goal and make a commitment to achieving it. That is when you can do the impossible.

Avoid the trap of believing that you won't succeed just because no one else has. You are unique; no one else can do what you can do the way you can do it. No one else can judge whether your goals are realistic. They can never be in your shoes, and they can never know what you can achieve. It is amazing what you can accomplish when you really want something and are willing to do all it takes to get it!

While you might not always be sure of your direction, you can trust your inner voice to lead you to your destination. Life takes on a new meaning when you can see with your inner eye that you are moving closer to your goal. This awareness points you in a new direction, opening you to new ways of achieving your aims. A special harmony arises between your inner voice and the world around you.

Your e-Coach contains an exercise called "Know Your Goals" that will assist you in setting goals that resonate deeply in your heart.

Thanks for your seminar.  It came just in time for my speaking ministry going to the next level.  I  scheduled three more personality engagements this year and five more for next year.  It seems like things are falling into line at just the right time.  I guess you could say I took a leap of  faith and what I hoped for is becoming a reality.  Praise God for His faithfulness.

"I have attended the Personality Trainer's Workshop 4 times in the USA. Whilst it was quite an investment to travel all the way from New Zealand, this has been absolutely beneficial to the building of my business.
The Advanced Personality Workshop that I attended in 2006, covered so much more for anyone wanting to build their business/ministries.  It put me in touch with other trainers doing the same things. The sessions are insightful, and give time to network.  The discussions around human behavior I had with other trainers was wonderful.  There's no doubt that one receives value for their investment!"
