Personality Principles

APT 2006 group

October 29, 2007

 Greetings Everyone!

big pumpkin   Last night I stayed up late and watched a PBS show about growing - excuse me, "raising" pumpkins, giant pumpkins!   Some of these beasts weigh in at 1,300 + lbs!!!  The thing I kept hearing from these pumpkin raisers was that they called them their "children" whence the raising instead of growing pumpkins.

Now, I watch everything from a personality view point and it was very interesting to see how many of these faithful fruit raisers were Peaceful Phlegmatic. There were a few Proper Melancholics in this pursuit too, but mostly Peacefuls.  They watches from their windows, porches and lawn chairs, as their prised pumpkins grew 20 to 30 pounds a day.  They bonded and cared for these pumpkins as if they were part of the family - in fact, some of the younger guys admitted to missing their "real" kids special events because they were taking care of the pumpkins.  And, take care of the pumpkins they did - hanging beds, tents, special food, some guys feed their pumpkins milk!  I guess it's for strong bones or something like that.

I was fascinated by the fierce, but quiet competition between these pumpkin raisers.  The out pouring of support for the losers or the lesser winners, brought tears to your eyes.  Many of the men had made it their life's goal to live long enough to raise a 1000 pound pumpkin. Talk about single minded focus!  This show was a wonderful example of the strengths of the Peacefuls in action.  Check your PBS station for: Lords of the Gourd: The Pursuit of Excellence. It's worth the watch.

 Today's Prayer
October 29, 2007
Dear Father in Heaven, praise be to your name in all the earth! Thank you for the years of good health you have given, and for walking me through the times when I have been ill or faced physical problems. I pray that I, and every Christian, will always be mindful of the fact that our bodies are the temples of the Holy Spirit. We want to keep ourselves clean, pure, and as healthy as possible, for we need to be good examples and have good testimonies before others. We need to honor you and your Spirit through our bodies, as well as our minds and actions. Please give us wisdom and knowledge of right things to eat, the right ways to exercise, and motivate us to do what we must to stay in shape and be healthy. So often we get busy and have so much to do, that we do not make time to take care of our physical bodies. Open the door, give us the desire, and show us the way. May we take care of what you have given us. In the name of the Savior I pray, amen.

Personality Principle # 2
Admit the Truth - Own Your Behavior.
It amazes me how fast people's defenses come roaring to the surface when a personality weakness is exposed. "Well, if Joe would have done his part, I wouldn't have...." I have seen tears, temper tantrums, finger pointing and the ever present shifting the blame take place when our immaturity is called to task. Well, enough about me. =0)

The first step on the road to maturity or living in your strengths is - own your behavior. If you are late most of the time - admit it.  If you blow-up easily - admit it. Do you spend time thinking of ways to get even - admit it.  Do you hold people hostage with your moods - admit it.  We can't stop doing a behavior until we see ourselves "doing" the behavior.

If scientists didn't admit the out come of their experiments, where do you think modern medicine, technology, or life in general would be?  I have a feeling we would still be teaching the earth is flat and if you sailed too far you would fall off the edge of the world. Or, that the Sun still orbits around the earth.  We would think all kinds of ignorant ideas. If ignorance leads to fear and failure, than knowledge and understanding will lead to truth.  Scripture says, "You will know the truth and the truth will set you free." John 8:32

Some may think the reason to study personalities is to pigeon-hole people into categories, but the real reason behind learning about personality traits, is to instigate improvement - in our relationships and in our own personal growth.  Here's a news flash, when we start living in our strengths, our relationships improve - go figure!

So, find the "You are Here" sticker on your life's path and "own it." Own all of it, the good and the not so good behavior. It will feel great to wear your own skin - the one God has tailor made just for you.

Now I need a favor from you too.

I have been given a wonderful opportunity to teach a workshop on understanding emotional needs in the work place, at the 20th Annual, Access Group 2007 Graduate and Professional Financial Aid Conference on November 15, 16 & 17 in San Francisco, CA.  I've entitled the workshop "Less Stress, More Fulfilling." The lady in charge told me it's one of the top choices of workshops this year!  Do you think there's stress in the work place?! I'm thinking SO!

Here's my need - I have worked out of my home office for the past 20 years and I'm sure the office drama has changed since the last time I had to punch a clock, so I need to hear from those of you who work in an office setting on a regular basis, what are the biggest headaches you face when dealing with your co-workers?

Boundaries over stepped?
Too loud of talking?
Gossip?
Back stabbing?
Stealing credit for work?
Messy desk mate?
Dirty dishes in the break-room?
Control freak Boss?
etc. etc. etc...

I don't need this information written up into an article, I'm looking for scenarios that drive you crazy.  I want to present the emotional needs in a way that can defused the stress, by giving the right emotional need to the right personality we work with. If you want to write your scenario up as an article, I'll post it in an up-coming newsletter.

Please email your ideas to me at [email protected]
or call me at 314-6161-8101

Thank you!  Thank you ! Thank you!

Quote of the Week
In the spirit of this month's holiday, I thought I would find quotes about FEAR.

Ferdinand Foch (1851 - 1929)

The moment we begin to fear the opinions of others and hesitate to tell the truth that is in us, and from motives of policy are silent when we should speak, the divine floods of light and life no longer flow into our souls.

Elizabeth Cady Stanton , 1890 US suffragist (1815 - 1902)

APT Praise

Thanks for your seminar.  It came just in time for my speaking ministry going to the next level.  I  scheduled three more personality engagements this year and five more for next year.  It seems like things are falling into line at just the right time.  I guess you could say I took a leap of  faith and what I hoped for is becoming a reality.  Praise God for His faithfulness.
