APT 2006 group

October 23, 2007

 Greetings Everyone!

colorful leaves      Crisp - Clean - Colorful  APT 2006 group

Wouldn't it be wonderful if the above adjectives were the words used to describe our behavior?  Over the past 25 years I have learned one very important piece of information about myself - I drive some people nuts!  It's true, everyone of us has the ability to bug the daylights out of other people in our lives, either at work, home or play.  The problem is - we either don't know it or we won't admit it.

There were days when my behavior had caused me so much shame and frustration I wanted to lock myself in a hole and never come out.  I couldn't control my reactions. I wish there had been a 12 step program for broken personalities, so I could have gotten the help I needed.  It would have been good for me to stand up in front of a group and say, "Hello, My name is Kathryn and I am out of control."  God is good, he gave me many opportunities to own my behavior, and one day after learning about the basic emotional needs of each personality, I surrendered to owning my weakness - Ouch!  I realized emotional needs are the "why" that motivated my behavior. Drugs and alcohol were not part of my life style, I didn't need that kind of help to get myself into trouble. All I had to do was open my mouth. It took me a while to figure out, the mouth is a microphone to the heart, broadcasting it's attitudes about everything that effects it. Proverbs 4:23, says, "Guard your heart more than anything else, because the source of your life flows from it." (God's Word) How true this is.

Recently I watched a news clip about a teenage girl who, while resisting arrest, was pepper sprayed and handled roughly.  At first I thought - bad man!  After watching the police tape of the incident, I started to change my mind. The interviewer asked this girl why she had resisted the police officer, seeing the officer had asked her fifteen times to settle down.  She said she acted that way, because she was scared.  Well, I know fear makes us do stupid things, but as the story unfolded, it turns out this teen was three hours out past curfew, walking the streets alone.  Apparently, there had been fighting going on at her home and she took to the streets for safety. OK, now the red flags were coming out - fighting - alone - wondering in the dark of night...there is a mind set here that is not healthy.

The interviewer's next question was very interesting, he asked her what she saw on the tape now that she had a chance to view it.  With her mother by her side (the same mother who was part of the domestic fighting), she responded, "I saw an innocent little girl being beat-up by a cop."  WOW!  Talk about denial!  When the streets are safer at three o'clock in the morning than your home and resisting authorities is a proper response to braking a law, and you fear anyone who restricts your freedom in order to protect your safety - Sweetheart, you've got problems!  Do the math - it's no wonder she's in trouble.

The same can be said about many "innocent" people with personality issues. When we refuse to see our behavior, we only need to do the math to see the end result  It could very well be said about us, "Well, I never! And they call themselves Christians, I think...."  See, it's not hard to pin-point the flaws in other people's behavior, but oh, the pain we feel when we come under the examining lens our self.  But, scripture alos tells us in Prov. 5:21 - 23, "Each person's ways are clearly seen by the Lord, and he surveys all his actions.  A wicked person will be trapped by his own wrongs, and he will be caught in the ropes of his own sin.  He will die for his lack of discipline and stumble around because of his great stupidity." Ouch!

When I think back to days gone bye, a shiver of shame still over takes me. It was not enough for me to knowabout personality strengths and weaknesses, I needed to discipline myself to take a good look at my actions and more importantly my re-actions and bring them in line with mature behavior that is right for my personality.  This is not a one time experience - it's a life long journey, one I have learned to treasure and enjoy.

I thank God for the people who came before me, the ones who asked the hard questions and sought out even harder answers in order to bring this wisdom and understanding into the light. My life will bring more glory to God if I walk in maturity and integrity than being trapped and stumbling in my ignorance and sin. God is gracious and loving, wanting us to live to our fullest potential - so let' do it!  =0) To God be the glory!

Psalm 119:93, "I will never forget your guiding principles,
because you gave me a new life through them."

Blessings,

Kathryn

Today's Prayer
October 22, 2007
"Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour" (1 Pet. 5:8). Dear Lord, I am so aware of how satan picks at me and tries to trip me all the time. I know there are spiritual dangers around me. Please help me to remain alert and to be under the Holy Spirit's control at all times. I want to draw near to You, so the devil will flee. Please protect me and my family from harm and evil. Thank You for Your love, concern, and protection. In Jesus' name, amen.

Personality Principle # 1
You Are Here - Finding your bearings.

Completing the Personality Profile may seem like taking a test, but it's a tool that will help you find a starting point.  Think of it like going to the shopping mall.

First, you need to decide to go to the mall (in need of something: information, guidance, hope). Park and walk in (do the profile). Now if you don't know exactly where you are, you might wander round in circles.  A helpful thing to do is look for the directory board and find the "You Are Here" sticker (add up your totals).

Once you figure out where "You Are Here" is, you now can make a Personality Plan for getting from where you are to where you want to be.  You may find you're on the wrong end of the mall (living in weaknesses), which means it will take a little more time to get where you want to go (living in strengths).

The journey may be long or short, but at least you're not aimlessly walking in circles any more.  What you want to become is an individual who is living in his or her strengths, instead of being trapped in weaknesses.

In the journey of discovering your identity, you can use the tools of understanding personality traits to overcome natural tendencies and find freedom to live in your strengths.

Yes, "You Are Here."  But, here is not where you will want to stay.  Apply the Personality Principles and enjoy living in your strengths!

Writing Opportunities
I want to thank everyone that sent in your Christmas information.  If you didn't get a chance to respond this last week there is still time, so brush off those articles and observation, and send them in to Allison!

Your help is needed!
Allison Mooney, (New Zealand's top CPT) is putting together a series of articles and talks on Christmas shopping/buying habits and of course it will revolve around Personalities!

Here's where you come in - she is looking for stories and observations which can be posted in her project. (Remember, we are not trying to pin people in to habits that are not true.  Please do NOT assume a behavior, watch and report what actually happens. Thank you for being careful about this, because we get a bad name by pigeonholing people, and for some reason, they don't like being pigeonholed!  Imagine that!)

You may submit an article, a story, or an observation.  Your work is still your domain and can be sent to other publications also.  This is a good time of year to start posting your articles about the holidays. (I will be listing the major article sites in the next newsletter.)

Here are some questions to start the creative juices flowing:
After each question, identify the person's personality.

Who has consistently given the best "liked" gifts?
Who has consistently given the worst gifts?
What motivates you in your gift purchasing decisions?
Who is a last minute shopper?
Who is done early?
Who gives the most expensive gifts?
Who uses beautiful wrappings and bows?

By no means are these the only questions to ask, but you get the drift, add your own questions and answers.

Quote of the Week

"We cannot tell what may happen to us in the strange medley of life. But we can decide what happens in us - how we can take it, what we do with it - and that is what really counts in the end. How to take the raw stuff of life and make it a thing of worth and beauty - that is the test of living."

APT Praise

Thanks for your seminar.  It came just in time for my speaking ministry going to the next level.  I  scheduled three more personality engagements this year and five more for next year.  It seems like things are falling into line at just the right time.  I guess you could say I took a leap of  faith and what I hoped for is becoming a reality.  Praise God for His faithfulness.
