Toot Your Horn Edition!
Greetings!

When I first decided to become a speaker, the hardest part of the job for me was to "toot my own horn." Life as a martial artist taught me humility. My past life as a drummer made me comfortable in a support role.

My own life-long struggle with self-value caused me to buy into a Wayne's World philosophy: "I'm not worthy!"

As an entrepreneur and speaker, I learned that if I was going to contribute something of value to the world, I'd better be willing to tell other people about it! I learned that as long as I'm confident in the value I'm delivering, it's my obligation to spread the word!

Black Belt Mindset helps me cultivate the confidence to "toot my horn" and share my value with the world. This issue is focused on helping you share your incredible power & value with the world.

Special thanks to Ken Lizotte for his contribution to this month's PowerPAGE. Be sure to visit Ken's website and pick up his powerful book: The Expert's Edge and listen for Ken on a coming episode of PowerPOD!

Best thoughts for success & happiness!

Toot Your Horn!

"I am the greatest!" Muhammad Ali

Why is it so hard to toot your own horn? It's still hard for me even though I know it's necessary to continue to build my platform as a speaker and "thoughtleader." Maybe you're genuinely humble. Maybe you don't want to hurt other people's feelings. Maybe you don't really believe what you bring to the world is "the greatest."

What are you afraid of? Are you afraid that people will say you're tooting too loud? The alternative is that people won't know who you are at all!

Knock it off! If you don't toot your own horn nobody else is going to do it for you. These days there are more opportunities than ever to get your message out. People are also inundated with information and marketing every day; your message has to be clear, sincere and unique.

Of course, tooting your own horn has to start with genuine belief. If you're selling crap you should be worried about tooting your horn too loud; you will be exposed at some point. If you truly believe that your product, service or contribution to the world is meaningful and useful it's your obligation to tell people about it! What good are you doing if people don't know what you're doing?

Start with self-belief. Take a good look at what you're doing before you boldly go forth into the market. Make sure you know what you're talking about and that you're ready to deliver. Then start tooting!

Belief and self-confidence are products of experience. In Black Belt Mindset there are no shortcuts. You've got to get your message out; sometimes your message will resonate, other times you'll attract critics. This process is part of honing and focusing your message and building the confidence you need to toot even louder.

When I say toot loudly, I'm not saying just start running your mouth as loud as you can. I'm talking about leveraging as many platforms as you can to make your message known:

  • Blog
  • Podcast
  • Newsletter
  • Articles for your local papers
  • Host informational seminars
  • Speak at every opportunity
  • Find media & PR opportunities
  • Write a book

Or...sit in your store, office or plant and wait for people to find you!

Position yourself as an expert in your field and showcase your expertise to the world! Ken Lizotte gives you a complete game plan for creating expert positioning and celebrity in his powerful book The Expert's Edge.  Read Sam Horn's POP! Stand Out in Any Crowd.  (Ken Lizotte is our guest contributor this month...read his article below and listen for him on an upcoming episode of PowerPOD!)

If you're not a good writer, learn how or find someone who can ghost write for you. If you're not a powerful speaker become one! Join Toastmasters and attend one of my PresentingPOWER workshops. On today's marketing battlefield, these are the tools you need to stand out. These are skills that can be learned and cultivated.

"Perfection is not a destination, but a never-ending process."

I said that! This philosophy is one of the greatest gifts I received from my life as a martial artist. This is the heart of Black Belt Mindset. If you are a good writer, become a better writer. If you're a great presenter, become an even more powerful presenter. The battlefield is littered with the bodies of the complacent masses.

The fact is there is always room at the top. The middle and bottom of any market is crowded; most people will not dedicate themselves to developing and leveraging these skills and opportunities.  Those who do are the people you hear about; their trumpets are blaring from the top of the hill!
If you truly believe that what you're doing brings value to the world, make sure people hear about it. It's up to you to craft and deliver your message to attract the people who will benefit from your passion.

Write & Publish Articles
for Business Success!
By Ken Lizotte CMC, author of The Expert's Edge

Ken LizotteTo stand out from the crowd, especially in these less-than-boom times, many businesses have latched onto an underutilized but powerful marketing technique available to us all: writing and publishing articles.

A great benefit of this approach is that it permits the promotion of one's ideas and services while educating your target market all in one fell swoop, converting you the author into a bona fide "thought leader."

How to get started? First, do NOT write an article, do not pass go! Instead, obtain a "go-ahead" from an editor at a publication read by your target market, i.e., by decision-makers who typically hire you. Do you contract with CFOs? Pitch to a financial executive publication. Are you hired by CEOs and presidents? Try a broad management/executive publication. HR VPs like to send you checks? There are plenty of HR pubs out there to set your sights on.

Before you pitch, though, determine your prime business objective. Which services of yours would you most like to promote? Be sure to structure your article ideas around topics that would highlight such services.

For example, one client of mine specializes in employee benefits, so we pitched an article idea called "Putting Defined Benefits Plans in Place: What to Think About." We then approached publications read by corporate benefits planners.

And how did we get the editors' attention? Via a simple process, really: we emailed targeted editors directly, armed with a succinct, to-the-point synopsis of the article idea. We also tried more than one publication, in case the first wasn't interested. Before long, we have found three on our list that wanted to see this article.

When you set out on the same path, you will likely reap similar results. Ultimately, you'll watch article after article gloriously find their way into print. After that, "thought leader" will become your new moniker, one you can truthfully, and proudly, tack up in front of your name.

Be a Black Belt Media Star!

People often ask me how I get on radio and television programs. There are three basic ways to do it:
  • Do-It-Yourself
  • Hire a PR firm
  • All of the above!
I use both. I use PR firms to get me to programs and markets where it may not be as efficient for me to do it myself. I'm currently shopping PR firms to get me on major national radio and television shows. I shop for firms that have a proven track record and can provide reasonable assurances that I will get placements.

Jim & Joey ReynoldsI stay away from firms who contract with everyone who calls them! I want the firm to qualify me as much as I'm qualifying them. If they can't sell my message I want to know that up front. I'll re-work the message. I don't want to spend money on a campaign that has no chance of success.

A PR campaign is a team effort. Find a firm that understands your message and understands the current market. Selling a pitch to media outlets is as much dependent on great timing as a great message.  Work with your PR agent to craft your pitch to address today's market needs.

Even when I'm working with a PR firm; the DIY effort is always full throttle! My team and I are pitching media every single day. We watch for TV and radio shows that are synergistic with our message. We track key words that resonate with my message. We craft specific pitches to serve the current needs of these programs.

Your Do-It-Yourself effort includes constant monitoring of the media that serves your market; local, national or both. Know the show before you pitch; don't waste the producer's time or yours.

Most of all, find topical and timely ways to deliver your message. Remember that a TV or radio show is above all, entertainment. They're serving a specific audience. The fact that you do something great is not necessarily going to get you on a show. You've got to show how the audience is going to be moved, educated or entertained by what you're doing.

Apply Black Belt Mindset to your media campaign. The secret of the martial arts is PRACTICE; the secret to media success is PRACTICE! Here are some tips:
  • Craft media questions and talking points and practice them.
  • Know the host and anticipate alternative questions and lines of discussion.
  • If you're going on radio, record your practice sessions, critique and adapt.
  • If you're going on TV, practice with a camera. You may be surprised by what you see!
  • Be TOUGH on yourself! You've got Black Belt Mindset; you can take it! Work to improve and do not accept any compromise.

Be persistent but not pestilent! If you don't get a reply from your email, one-sheet or phone call, hang in there. Don't call them every day; assume that your pitch just wasn't right at the time. Craft another angle or change your pitch to suit current needs and try again. Assume that if you don't hear back it's because these people are busy; not that your idea stinks (provided of course that it doesn't!).

Remember that the people you're working with in the media are...well, people! Media hosts, production crews and producers are all people and deserve your respect. Take care of their time by being prepared and on-time whether it's a phoner from home or in-studio. Treat everyone on the crew with courtesy and they'll respond in kind. Act like a star and they'll remember you; and they'll probably never book you again!  A simple gift goes a long way toward developing a good relationship; bring one of your logo-branded mugs and some gourmet coffee to go with it. Follow up with a nice card and thank-you; to the producer and the crew as well as the host.

So...take some time and draft a media plan. Decide how much you're willing to do yourself and how much you're willing to spend to have someone else work for you. Then craft your pitch, practice and go for it!
