DCPP Gratitude Month!

Greetings!

First, THANK YOU!

A lot of great opportunities have opened up for me and the team at DCPP over the winter. As enjoy the first days of spring we're blessed with new friends, new adventures and renewed contact with loyal friends.

You've made all of this possible; and we've got powerful stuff in store for you as the year continues.

One of the most effective techniques I've found for increasing abundance and developing power is my Gratitude Practice. Mine is simple, I just say thank you every day for the people in my life, the things I have and most of all for my talents and abilities. Your talents and abilities are what you use to bring value to the people and the world around you!

Check out our new PowerSHOT feature; this links to a short video on the importance and practicality of my Gratitude Practice.

So, thanks for supporting our mission and may you have much to be thankful for in May!

Best thoughts for success & happiness!
Jim

Gratitude: The Balancing Factor

I'm always preaching about balance. Balance is the foundation component in the Power Triangle. You apply power through balance, focus and timing.

In the ring or on the dojo floor, balance is relatively easy to understand. It simply means you're keeping your face off the floor most of the time! If we go a little deeper we can talk about having a sense of grounding or "rooting." That's a connection to the ground which provides the solid platform we need to express power effectively.

Develop good control of balance and rooting and your punches and kicks are most powerful and effective. When you're out of balance you can punch with a lot of energy, but most of that energy is likely to be wasted; it doesn't translate into a clean, powerful strike.

Real life works the same way. You're constantly trying to balance the components of a successful and happy life. Material, emotional and spiritual resources need to be maintained in relative balance and in relative harmony with your needs and desires.

Ignore one or more of these key areas of life and you're heading for trouble. Imbalance causes stress, frustration and even illness. There are, however, times when one area or the other may require more of your attention. That's when people really get into trouble! Scarcity in material, emotional or spiritual areas is usually the cause of this imbalance, although you can also become out of balance through excessive abundance. That's what happens when you become obsessive. There's a fine line between focused and obsessive and you've got to keep an eye on it!

Maintaining balance is simple, it's not always easy. Keep it simple! Keep the 3 Key Areas of Life in mind: Material, Emotional and Spiritual and take some time daily or weekly to do a quick inventory of your resources in each area.

A Gratitude Practice is a terrific way to take inventory. If you see that one area or another is out of whack, make small adjustments before it becomes a huge problem. Gratitude gives you perspective on the relative balance between what you have and what you need or want.

In the past few weeks there have been several cases of suicide and murder committed by people who allowed their lives to get completely out of balance, at least two were high level executives who had plenty of material wealth, but were obviously lacking in spiritual and emotional resources.

It takes Discipline to keep up a Gratitude Practice; some people will just think its stupid and won't bother. I can tell you from personal experience that gratitude has saved my life more than once, and continues to make my life better every day.

The Gift of Gratitude

Kevin EikenberryGratitude might seem like a soft or even an obvious subject to you.  Perhaps you would rather read about a leadership lesson or a marketing approach or even a motivational technique.  If that is what you are thinking, I urge you to read on.  I don't think you will be disappointed.

From the time we are little kids we are taught to say thank you.  It is one of the first things we learn.  We are taught to say thank you because our parents know that showing that simple appreciation is polite behavior and because it is the right thing to do.  This lesson is one of the most valuable we learn from our parents - one that we should definitely be thankful for.

Warning
There are many ways that we can and should show our gratitude as adults in a business or professional setting.  I will share several of them with you, and they will be very valuable to you, if they are used with the right spirit and attitude.  Approach them from an authentic attitude and you will reap more than you sow.  Consider them as techniques or ploys and you risk being seen as insincere or manipulative.

Some Ideas
Given that caveat, here are some tangible ways to show your gratitude to others in a business or professional setting.

  • Say Thank You.  Simple as that.  When people do things for you or that you appreciate, say thanks.  In person or on the phone, always say it when you can.  A simple thank you great, but it will be even more valuable if you are specific as to why you are so thankful.
  • Type Thank You.  Drop someone a quick email.   If you can't tell someone in person, sending a quick note of thanks is very powerful.  Have you ever kept an email of thanks, reading it over again?  I'll bet you have.  This shows why some written proof is so valuable.  It is permanent.
  • Write Thank You.  I have a file in the drawer beside my desk that has all sorts of notes and kind words I have received from people over the last 20 years.  I seldom add something to this file without pulling something else out to relive a kind word written to me.  You've heard it a million times - handwritten thank you notes are powerful.  They are.  Take the time to write people a note.  Whether they work in the next cubicle, down the hall, or across the country, write out your thanks.
  • Share a token.  Across the country in next few weeks lots of business gifts will be given.  You will receive holiday fruit, coffee mugs, wine and countless other gifts.  All are sent to wish you happy holidays and to thank you for your business or your relationship.  These are meant to be gifts of gratitude.  Think back on the holiday gifts you have received in the past from professional relationships.  Which (if any) are memorable?  My guess is those that felt personally selected, or that were especially relevant to your interests, or the relationship with the other person or business.  Sharing gifts is a great way to show your gratitude, but will be most effective if done with thought, not but adding another name to the database to receive the flower arrangement.
I know that nothing I have said above is new or earth shattering.  It is all common sense.  Why do I share it then?  I share it with you for several reasons, all of them equally important.

  • Common sense isn't always common practice.
  • We all need to be reminded.
  • The attitude is as important as the action.

Giving and Receiving
The most wonderful part of giving the gift of gratitude isn't that giving is the polite thing to do, though it is.  It isn't that it is the right thing to do, though it is.  It isn't even because of how good and important it makes others feel, though it does.   The most wonderful part is that when we give the gift of gratitude, with the right spirit, genuinely from our heart, we get as much or more in return for giving the thanks as the receiver gets from receiving it.

The Final Paradox
If you were looking for a leadership lesson, I hope you found it.  Great leaders show their gratitude freely and genuinely.  If you wanted to learn something about marketing it is here - be gracious.  Good marketers know that saying thank and meaning it is good business.  If you wanted a motivational idea, giving thanks can be a powerful motivator to both the giver and receiver.

Be thoughtful in your thankfulness, gracious in your giving, and plentiful in your praise of others.

Make showing your heart a new habit you begin cultivating, in your organization, you're your community, in your home today.

Thank you so much for reading.

Your Gratitude Practice

Jim Uniform 01 100x100Simple Gratitude Practice
Some of you might think my method is dumb as hell. While I admit that I've been hit in the head...A LOT; this simple Gratitude Practice has kept me going through some of the darkest times of my life.

I freely admit that nothing turns me off more than some sanctimonious guru spouting some platitude about gratitude. I hate people who exploit you for your hard-earned with promises of fulfilling all your dreams just by thinking positively and being grateful for whatever you have right now, as lousy as that might be!

To me, the attitude of gratitude is not a platitude! My Gratitude Practice is a powerful and practical tool. By simply focusing on what I have rather than what I don't have, I take an inventory of the Material, Emotional and Spiritual resources I have right here and right now.

Even when it seemed like I had nothing, giving thanks helped me to see that I did have resources to draw from. Gratitude creates an awareness of what you do have here and now, and however scarce those resources might be that's what you've got to work from going forward!

My Gratitude Practice is as simple as it gets. I simply get up in the morning and think about the people in my life, the things I own or have access to and most of all, I try to identify and appreciate my talents and abilities. If I've got talents and abilities; anything and everything else is within reach; within the scope of those talents and abilities.

Some people prefer prayer; some people might have other more formal expressions of gratitude. Whatever works! For me, I like to keep it simple. I find that I can stay more focused and disciplined when my practice is simple.

Whatever you do a Gratitude Practice keeps you focused on the present moment; and that's when you're creating your future!
