You're talking to the right guy!
Most of us have experienced times in life when we just want
to quit. It may be a job that is taking all your time and energy and just not
going anywhere. It may be a business you've given 100% to that just isn't
paying off financially. It may be a marriage that seems to be an endless stream
of conflict, without meaningful communication. It may be a friendship lacking
in reciprocity.
Let's really take off the gloves: Your job might suck, your
husband/wife might be a bastard/bitch, your kids might be little creeps, your
friends and relatives are vampires and you watch reality TV just to see people
who seem sane and normal compared to your life.
But
"Quitters never win and winners never quit," right?
It is true that it takes constant motivation and discipline
over time to create success. It is true that successful people fail most of the
time, yet to successful people ultimately "Failure is not an option." It is
true that at times a hundred things have to go right to create a success while
one thing going wrong can lead to disaster. And it's true that every disaster
is an opportunity.
Come on! Haven't you had times in your life when it seemed
that no matter what you did your feet were stuck in mud, you kept banging your
head against the wall, your knuckles were bleeding from knocking on doors that
never opened and let's face it, you just wanted to stop?
Only if you're normal.
Once again some experts are predicting recession. Amazing
how these predictions come during the presidential election season when even
the most jaded among us pay some attention to political process. Of course,
there are also promises of utopian solutions to our problems including free
health care, endless funds for education, no more war and a horizon of
boundless prosperity.
I'll just ask you, in whose hands do you want to place your
vision of personal success & happiness? This is not a political question;
it's a very personal question.
Will there be a recession? Will we remain at war? Is the
earth really warming and if so, are we responsible? I don't know. It depends on
who you believe and there are convincing arguments for every opposing viewpoint
on nearly every pressing issue we face. In the middle of all this chaos, doom
and gloom you still have to survive, and you may want to prosper.
My point is this: in the midst of what Zorba calls "the full
catastrophe," each of us will still face the fundamental daily challenges of
survival and will desire some measure of security and happiness. Each of us is
still faced with a simple choice:
Do I
continue?
Do I quit?
I don't want to be morbid but any of us can choose to quit
the game of life at any time. You don't need to resort to the extreme measure
of suicide to quit; many people who quit the game of life languish in a state
of near catatonic complacency for many, many years. You can choose not to
better yourself; you can choose to accept your current condition in life. Worst
of all you can choose to place your destiny in the hands of others. You can
choose to be a spectator or a player.
No president is a savior. It's not the job of Congress to
solve all our problems. Ultimately, they work for us, we don't work for them.
And that brings me to the subject of work: there is no "the Man" and you don't
work for him! Ultimately, you work for yourself. You work for yourself whether
you own your company or you're employed by someone else; you may not own the
company but you certainly own your job.
I don't want to leave my destiny in the hands of others. I
want to do everything I possibly can to create my personal vision of success
and happiness and transform my vision into a reality. I'll take my lumps along
the way, I will keep moving and ultimately, somehow, I will prevail!
How do I know this? Because I understand that despite any of
the conditions and circumstances beyond my control, the one factor I can always
control is my constant dedication to self-perfection. I can always be working
to increase my Personal Power. In making myself a more powerful person I
increase my value to others. As my value increases, so do my rewards.
Simple, not easy!
That was the long answer, now for the short answer.
When the going really gets tough, you really have two fundamental
options:
1. Quit.
2. Keep
going.
Quitting IS easy! Just quit! Keep going and you know you'll
face continued adversity and challenges. You also know that ultimately, you'll
enjoy success.
Which one will you choose?
