This month we've got some special treats...Dana Sabean contributes a powerful article on customer service, and we've got a special contribution from former NFL star Chris Boniol.
Dana Sabean 01Customer Service,
Is it as Simple as Reading the Sign?

This month's article comes from Power Team contributor Dana Sabean...

As a trainer at world famous L.L.Bean Inc, I taught thousands of new hires to recognize that every customer wears a sign that reads "Look at me, I'm important."  The idea is that if you "read" the sign and respond appropriately, you will give great customer service.

As an independent training consultant, I still teach people to read the sign in my customer service workshops.

As a customer, I find that not many are "reading" my sign;

In person: On a recent business trip I stopped at a store.  I was standing up front, on my toes in an attempt to see the directional signs.  Clearly, I needed help.  I could have been invisible to the staff; no one even asked if they could help me, much less read my sign.

On the phone: Trying to clear up a billing error.  They had posted a $2400 payment to my account, a payment I did not make.  You would think they would be glad to correct the problem, I felt as though I inconvenienced them!  This, incidentally, has been my third billing error with this company.

By mail: This same company sent me a solicitation this past weekend.  The letter starts "Dear valued customer." I ask you, why am I treated like a criminal when there is a billing error and somehow become a valued customer when they want to sell me something?  I'm insulted.

Will I buy from these companies?

You can bet not.

With competition so strong and customer loyalty the goal, can you afford to ignore the customer right in front of you?  We aren't "just looking" we don't have time for that.  Help us!

Today, imagine every one of your customers is wearing a sign that reads, "Look at me, I'm important" take a minute to treat them like they ARE important and monitor the results.  I guarantee that you will be rewarded. It's that simple.

Top 5 Lies About Power
This month we're continuing with another excerpt from the book: "Dynamic Components of Personal Power"

LIE #5: YOU CAN'T GET IT!

A close cousin would be: "You don't deserve it."

Every human being has the capacity to develop tremendous personal power. Within the scope of your unique talents and abilities, your potential is unlimited.

I believed every one of these lies at some point in my life. I had good reason to believe these lies; they came from reliable sources.

These lies came from my parents, teachers, journalists, authors, and many other people I was supposed to trust and respect. I was indoctrinated with these lies as long as I can remember. I didn't know any better. Now I do.

I'm not mad at anyone who told me these lies, and I'm not going to start this book with a negative tone. Quite the opposite: blessed with the 20/20 vision of hindsight, I can see why the people I trusted told me these lies; they cared about me!

Some people, I'm sure, propagated these lies to keep power away from me, and you. Those people think the way to preserve power is to keep it away from others. At best that's selfish, at worst it's evil.

Parents, teachers and others tell you these lies because they're trying to keep you safe! People who care about you don't want to see you take stupid chances; they don't want you to get hurt and they don't want you to end up broke and broken. They just want you to be happy- and safe.

The problem is that safe and happy don't always go together. Real reward always involves risk; to win you've got to get in the game. Discipline yourself, practice, and prepare yourself to compete. Develop the courage to face competition.

You might agree or disagree with my "Top 5 Lies About Power." That's certainly your prerogative. If you want to hold on to the idea that power corrupts, it's not for you, or you don't deserve it, I can't stop you. If you really feel that way, you may as well not waste your time reading my book.

I don't pretend to be all things to all people; I'm just sharing my own limited understanding. When something works for me, you're welcome to it. I want to be powerful. To some extent, I am powerful. I want to continue to cultivate my personal power for my benefit and the benefit of others.

I now know it is my nature to be powerful. If you believe it's your nature to be powerful, let's get started!

I want to do a little something different this month...

Most of you know about my obsession with football. I started my semi-pro career as a kicker for the Midcoast Chaos of the New England football league at age 44.

Soon after joining my team, I knew I had to get some help to compete on the level I owed my team mates. My search led me to Chris Boniol. Chris had a brilliant career in the NFL kicking for the Cowboys, Eagles and Bears.

Chris now coaches and runs kicking camps for future NCAA and NFL stars. For players that can't attend his camps, Chris offers a video coaching service. I dropped Chris a line and asked if he had time to help a 40-plus year-old rookie kicker through a mid-life adventure in recapturing youth!

Not only was he up to the task, but like many of my martial arts teachers, Chris became an important source of learning and encouragement in my life; and we've never met face to face!

On October 21st, Rob Bironas of the Tennessee Titans kicked 8 field goals in one game breaking the previous record of 7 held by...Chris Boniol. When the record was broken, Chris became the recipient of a ton of email and other correspondence offering him condolences on his record. Chris answered his friends and fans with a very touching email.

There are times when we are so focused on success in a particular endeavor that it's easy to lose a sense of balance and proportion. Chris's words were so eloquent, direct and sincere I asked him if I could reprint his email in the Power Page...

I have received many emails, calls, and text messages offering condolences for my fallen NFL record. Before Sunday, I held the record for most field goals made in one game (7 for 7). Congratulations to Rob Bironas, Tennessee Titans kicker, who made 8 for 8 field goals to set a new record!

This is another opportunity for me to encourage all of the players I have known and coached to keep your identity as a player in perspective. If I were still defined as an NFL kicker and by the records I once held, I would be doomed for disappointment because they are bound to be broken. I am very far removed from that identity because God has placed many more valuable relationships and responsibilities in my life such as husband, father, friend, and coach. I won't get cut from these roles!

So guys...do all you can, to be all you can, while you can. Football is temporary. Enjoy it while it lasts, and know that God has an identity and role that is more permanent for you one day. How will you be defined?

Good luck the rest of the year.

God Bless!
Chris Boniol

Chris, thank you for your coaching and for sharing such an important message for life!
