April 2011
Greetings from your E$C Coordinators, Max Joel & Sara Jayanthi:

March brought a bumper crop of new funding opportunities from NYSERDA (see "Plenty of PONs" article below). These programs include support for large-scale solar arrays, fuel cell installations, clean energy manufacturing technology, and more.

But don't worry, April will be even more exciting as Solar One and NYC ACRE present Can New York City Have a Wind Industry?, the first event in the yearlong Clean Energy Connections series.

And of course, April is Earth Month. We hope to see you around town at one of the many events where we will be spreading energy efficiency information and inspiration!

Staten Island is Home to NY's First LEED Certified Mental Health Facility

After three years of planning, fundraising, building and construction, one of New York State's first LEED certified health facility and Staten Island's first green office building, plans to open this spring!

The Staten Island Mental Health Society will be moving four of their programs that serve 1,000 Staten Island children through 20,000 visits per year, into their new facility at 444 St. Marks Place in the coming months.

They began looking into a new space a few years ago, as they outgrew their current facility. In a major step toward the future of clean energy, President/CEO Dr. Kenneth Popler and Executive Vice President/COO Fern Aaron Zagor led their team to select a new space on Staten Island and to plan its green future.

Working with architect Michael J. Tormey, the team made many green decisions to turn a 100-year-old former factory building into an environmentally friendly, energy efficient, LEED certified, green children's center!

From solar panels and solar thermal on the roof, to rainwater collection for flushing toilets, down to recycled slag insulation, no green opportunity was passed over for this project.

The team also took advantage of many NYSERDA incentives to help fund their green remodeling. 444 St. Marks Place participated in the NYSERDA Solar Thermal Evaluation, Energy Smart Loan, and New Construction Program.

Other special features of this building, include an Inspire Wall - a solar collecting, energy saving wall panel by ATAS International - this fixture will help the building heat water so that it can be gas-free and heated by geothermal.

Green features at 444 St. Marks Place, Staten Island:

  • LightLouvers (shades against heat gain in summer / increases natural light into spaces)
  • Energy efficient lighting with occupancy sensors
  • Use of recycled materials in construction and recycling of removed material during construction
  • No or low VOC finishes

The combination of well thought out planning, utilizing recycled materials and NYSERDA's incentives, have worked together to help this building become one of New York State's first LEED certified health facilities and Staten Island first green office building!

NY's Grocers Go Green!

NYSERDA has announced new incentives for New York grocers to buy and install new energy efficient equipment. The goal is to reduce unnecessary energy consumption by replacing old and inefficient equipment at New York grocery stores and supermarkets.

green grocer storefrontAfter a 2010 study by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) revealed that during the summer, grocer's refrigeration systems account for 53% of their store's electricity consumption, followed by lighting at 19% and heating at 17%, it was determined that equipment upgrades could significantly reduce energy use by 10-30%.

NYSERDA will provide financial initiatives to help NY grocers, supermarkets, food co-ops and convenience stores reduce their energy use and overall operating costs. This new program, The Green Grocer Initiative, will partner grocers with NYSERDA technical consultants to collaborate on innovative energy efficiency solutions, including upgrades to or replacement of inefficient refrigeration equipment, coolers and cases.

For more information about this program, please read the full press release at www.nyserda.org/Press_Releases/2011/PressReleas20110308.asp.

Be sure to let your favorite neighborhood grocer know about this new money-saving (and energy saving!) opportunity!

Green Jobs/Green NY Break Retrofit Records

The Green Jobs/Green NY program has already helped to increase the number of energy efficiency retrofits in New York. NYSERDA's Home Performance with ENERGY STAR® program completed more than 800 retrofits in January 2011 and over 600 retrofits in February - retrofit records for each month.

This program is expected to generate jobs in NYS by stimulating investment in energy efficiency improvements in residential homes and businesses. Homeowners are provided with free or reduced-cost comprehensive home energy audits and low interest loans to finance necessary improvements. This program will be extended to small commercial, not-for-profit and multifamily buildings in the coming months. green jobs

More Green Jobs/Green NY highlights:

  • Since free and reduced-cost energy audits were offered in November 2010, NYSERDA has received 4,141 applications. Of these, 3,294 residential customers were approved for free audits and 297 for reduced-cost audits.
  • As of end of February 2011, 420 applications have been approved for Green Jobs/Green NY low-cost financing with 96 loans closed, 87 loans approved and awaiting closing, and an additional 237 loans in process, for a total of approximately $3.3 million in capital.

Spring Cleaning!
Put your space heaters away and disconnect any heat tapes.

When buying a new air conditioner or appliance, take your old unit "off the grid" and recycle it properly (e-waste recycling with Lower East Side Ecology Center, various locations in NYC)

Consider installing an ENERGY STAR qualified ceiling fan instead of an air conditioner to cut your cooling costs this spring/summer.

Clean your refrigerator's coils located behind or beneath your refrigerator and check the seals. Replace loose seals to avoid cold air leaks.

Remodeling? Purchase ENERGY STAR qualified doors and windows, and makes sure they are installed properly.
