Greetings from your E$C Coordinators, Max Joel & Sara Jayanthi:
We hope that you all had a wonderful (albeit snowy) holiday season. As 2011 starts, we're sure many of you are recycling out the old and bringing in the new - and E$C is here to help! This month we highlight important recycling drives happening all over the city, including E-waste events, Mulchfest 2011, and clothing swaps.
We also discuss exciting renewable energy incentives available to New Yorkers, including NYSERDA's new Solar Thermal program and the extension of the federal Renewable Energy Tax Grant. Finally, we provide a recap on all of the great green work at the 14th Street Y.
Happy New Year!

Greening the 14th Street Y: 2010 Year in Review
|
As we close the books on 2010, we thought it would be important to take a moment and review the wonderful progress one of our friends and partners, the 14th Street Y, has experienced over the last year.
 | | Entrance to the 14th St Y |
The Y has been committed to taking steps to make their community center a more vibrant and healthier asset to the area. Our relationship began last spring, when we discovered the Y's plan to go green with the help of the Jewish Greening Fellowship.
Later in the spring, the Y began the NYSERDA Flextech Program. The Program cost-shared 50% of the consultant's fees and provided the Y with objective and customized information to help them make energy decisions.
Through the Program, the Y was connected with Goldman Copeland Associates (GCA), one of NYSERDA's Flextech Partners who had already worked with the Y during their previous lobby renovation.
Over the summer the Y incorporated some of their new knowledge about energy efficiency into their pre-school curriculum. The Y purchased solar lamps for their rooftop garden, in order to teach the children about solar energy.
By the end of the summer, the Y had received approval from NYSERDA for their Task Work Order, allowing the work recommendations from GCA to begin.
At the same time, the Y took a minute to review their printing options for their next catalog; should they go with 100% recycled paper or 30% recycled content paper certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)? The final decision was made and the catalog was printed on 100% recycled paper that was also FSC certified and the printed with soy-based ink.
In the fall, a lighting audit was performed by UHS Lighting Services in two stages. A no cost upgrade audit was performed as part of the Con Edison Comverge partnership available in the Y's Manhattan area. Lamp and fixture replacements were performed at no cost to the Y. A more comprehensive audit was also performed that will be incorporated into the energy audit being performed by Goldman Copeland.
Also during the fall, the green team reconvened at the Y for a tour of the focus areas for energy efficient renovations. Already the Y had changed their lighting behaviors by turning off lights during off-hours and replacing standard incandescent bulbs with CFLs.
In November, we took some time to review the changes to the Y's theater space. The entire theater was renovated and remodeled to be a 'black box' theater. New lighting practices were created, new sound equipment and seating were brought in, and creative crews helped repurpose the old stage into a new storage space for the theater.
Now through January, the theater space will host the LABA's performance of "A Wonderfully Flat Thing".
The Y expects to receive the energy audit in early 2011. With that, the Y hopes to implement measures with immediate payback and to explore incentives and financing options to implement the other measures. The recommendations will cover HVAC system changes, lighting upgrades, control upgrades and capital improvements and changes. The Y is eager to pursue these recommendations.

NYSERDA Offers Cash Incentive to Encourage New Yorkers to Build Green Homes
| Thanks to our communities' growing interest in environmentally sustainable homes even during the economic downturn, NYSERDA has formally announced a program to help spur the building and certification of more green homes across the state.
The Green Residential Building Program offers incentives to owners of certain new or substantially renovated residential or residential mixed-use buildings which incorporate practices and technologies that lower energy costs, reduce waste and water use, and improve indoor air quality. Owners who demonstrate that their buildings use at least 30% less energy than conventionally built homes, and utilized the green principles listed below, will be qualified to receive the cash incentives. | A green residential building in Brooklyn |
Green Principles:
* Green design principles - i.e. building sitting and window positioning to take advantage of solar heat gain, minimize heat loss, utilize daylight and reduce energy use; * Green construction techniques - i.e. proper phasing of construction and use of processes to keep materials clean and dry to reduce potential for mold growth; * Green construction materials - i.e. recycled-content, reclaimed, rapidly-renewable and locally produced building materials. Incentives start at $5,125 for a single-family home and increase to $13,375 for an 11-unit building. To be eligible, buildings must receive their Certificate of Occupancy or Certificate of Completion between Jan. 1, 2010 and Oct. 31, 2013.

A reminder of energy saving habits for the New Year!
| |
* Turn your thermostat down when you're away from home for more than four hours and while you sleep. To save even more, install a programmable thermostat. Keep your home between 66 and 68 degrees.
* Be sure to keep heating sources free from obstruction (i.e rug, couch).
* Close fireplace dampers when not in use.
* Avoid pre-heating your oven for more than 10 minutes, and resist the urge to open the oven door to peak on your dish. Use the oven light option instead, and avoid losing 25 degrees of heat each time you open your oven.
* Repair leaky faucets. One drop per second can waste as much as 10 gallons of water in a week! If the water is hot, you lose not only the water but also the energy used to heat the water.
* Invest in a low-flow showerhead and faucet. They could reduce your water use by up to 50%.
