The 14th Street Y Kids Install Solar Power Lamps - Month 3
|
While awaiting the Energy Audit Task Work Order from Goldman Copeland, the 14th Street Y's Flextech Energy Audit Service Provider, the Y decided to take some proactive greening measures - integrating sustainability into their pre-school curriculum. The 14th Street Y purchased solar lamps from Home Depot for $4 each. They used the lamps to teach the children about solar energy. With the help of Anne-Marie, the children planted the solar lamps in the roof top garden. These solar lamps charge by solar power during the day, which then gets stored in a battery. The energy then powers the LED light during the evening, with no wiring involved. It was a happy sunny day for the children, for the Y, and for the rooftop garden. |

Energy Tip!
| AIR CONDITIONERS If your air conditioner is old, consider purchasing a new, energy-efficient model. You could save up to 50% on your utility bill for cooling. Look for the ENERGY STARŪ andEnergyGuide labels. Plant trees or shrubs to shade air conditioning units but not to block the airflow. Place your room air conditioner on the north side of the house. A unit operating in the shade uses as much as 10% less electricity than the same one operating in the sun.
