Energy $mart Communities eNewsletter
December 2009
Greetings from your E$C Coordinator, Diana Pangestu:

Happy Holidays!  'Tis the season to be merry, and even in economically challenging times like these, there are reasons to be merry.  Take for instance the Alliance for Downtown New York's new co-working space for those lacking office space, as well as discounted LED Holiday Lights available across the State, compliments of NYSERDA.

If man is known for anything, it is ingenuity - the ability to adapt to the surroundings and to innovate.  We all hear of the pain suffered during the Great Depression, but do we remember the inventions that came because of that era?  Laundromats, car radios, copy machines, and chocolate chip cookies.  This holiday season, let us employ the gifts we have towards the betterment of mankind.

The Energy $mart Communities eNewsletter disseminates information on NYSERDA programs and incentives, energy efficiency projects, contractor and building owner trainings, and partner news and events.

The mission of the Alliance for Downtown New York is to be the principal organization that provides Lower Manhattan's historic financial district with a premier physical and economic environment, advocates for businesses and property owners and promotes the area as a world-class destination for companies, workers, residents and visitors.

The Downtown Alliance announces the opening of the Hive at 55, a new coworking space located at 55 Broad Street in Lower Manhattan.  The Hive provides workspace for freelancers, consultants, and small business owners.  Find all the resources you need, plus a community of independent professionals looking to network, learn and do business.

The Hive at 55 was included in Mayor Bloomberg's MediaNYC 2020 plan, a program of eight initiatives to strengthen the media industry.  Additionally, the Hive received $100,000 in support from New York City Economic Development Corporation.

As a dense, walkable district with 14 subway lines and millions of square feet of green buildings, Lower Manhattan is one of the city's most sustainable business districts.  The Downtown Alliance works to promote the district's sustainability through our website, Going Green Downtown, and by hosting events and seminars to engage workers, residents, and property owners on sustainability.  Please visit www.downtownny.com/goinggreen  for more information.

This Holiday Use LED Holiday Lights and Save 90% Off Your Electricity Costs!
Holiday Lights

Do you know what the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree,
the Times Square New Year's Ball, and the Central Park Arsenal have in common?  They are all lit with LEDs!

Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are versatile and energy efficient, allowing for magnificent holiday displays, such as Prospect Park's 2006-2007 outdoor display, while only using 10% of the energy of traditional incandescent lights.  In addition, the diodes are covered with sturdy resin, not glass, so they hold up well in the harsh New York winters and save their users money on labor and replacement costs.

This year, consider switching to LEDs and impress your customers by going green.  By using a display that uses 10 times less electricity, you can build a display that's 10 times bigger for the same amount of electricity, and also draw a bigger crowd.   Additional advantages include increased safety/reduced fire hazards.  Also if 1 bulb burns out, the remaining lights stay on, reducing operation and maintenance (O&M) costs.

To encourage businesses to incorporate LEDs into their holiday displays, NYSERDA has partnered with holiday retailers to provide competitive pricing.  In addition, you can take advantage of a publicity campaign created by NYSERDA if you decide to put together a promotional event centered around your LED lights display.

The Upper West Side Goes Green from the Ground Up!

November's Green From the Ground Up was a huge success, drawing a crowd of over 90 building owners, managers, shareholders, contractors, and interested Upper West Side community members to the Red Oak on 106th Street.

GGU Nov1

Green from the Ground Up made its way into the Upper West Side on November 18, 2009 in collaboration with the Columbus Amsterdam BID, the Red Oak, and the Office of Recycling Outreach and Education.  This unique event brought together valuable information about greening apartment buildings with an opportunity for owners to meet energy and environmental services vendors.  Highlights included presentations on solar electric power by Solar One's Chris Neidl, solar hot water and cool roofs by Larsen Plano from the Community Environmental Center, residential energy efficiency by NYSERDA Energy $mart Communities Coordinator Diana Pangestu, recycling by Christina Salvi of the Office of Recycling Outreach and Education, and  incentive programs by Susan Gunn of ConEd.

GGU Nov1

Many of the tenants, owners, and facilities managers who attended said they would put what they had learned into action, in some cases by working with vendors they met at the event. One coop board member left convinced of the "'doability' of solar energy," promising to discuss it with the rest of her board, and a local facilities manager said that he planned to get a quote on energy efficiency improvements for his building as soon as possible.

In 2010, Green From the Ground Up will be coming to more neighborhoods around the city. Check back at www.solar1.org soon for details about upcoming events!  To schedule a Green from the Ground Up in your neighborhood, contact Celia Salgado at celia@solar1.org.
