The Energy $mart Communities Program - What Is It, and Why Solar One?

E$C Coordinator

"Hello, my name is Diana Pangestu, and I am the Energy $mart Communities Coordinator for the Downstate South Region (Manhattan and Staten Island)."

What is the Energy $mart Communities Program?
The Energy $mart Communities (E$C) Program offers local, convenient, community-based access to the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority's (NYSERDA's) energy-efficiency and R&D programs.  NYSERDA works with 10 Community Coordinators, strategically located throughout the State, to outreach NYSERDA's programs to residential, commercial, institutional, municipal, and industrial customers.

Why Solar One?
Through the E$C Program, Solar One serves as NYSERDA's representative in the Downstate South region (Manhattan and Staten Island), one of the 10 regions covering all of NYS with the exception of Nassau and Suffolk Counties.

What Does the Energy $mart Communities Coordinator Do For You?
As the E$C Coordinator at Solar One, my responsibilities include:
* Educating and providing assistance to New York City's homeowners, community leaders, business owners, and the general public on energy efficiency and renewable resources using community-based outreach, energy education forums, and one-on-one consulting to energy-related businesses and entrepreneurs.

* Matching energy project needs with the available NYSERDA funding opportunities and other economic development resources, including utility incentives, government tax credits and abatements, financing options, and other local resources.

* Helping organizations and businesses create jobs by providing access to job training and recruitment opportunities.

* Creating partnerships to encourage the development and implementation of local energy initiatives.  Initiatives to date include the Green Small Businesses and Green Bodegas with the Manhattan Borough President's Office Go Green Committee, the Green from the Ground Up for Multifamily Buildings Traveling Workshop, and the LED Holiday Lighting Campaign.

* Building a network of local organizations and agencies, such as local government entities, non-profits, building owners and managers, energy service companies, professional associations, building trade unions, and other parties interested in contributing to the adoption of energy efficiency and renewable energy.

A Brief Summary of Recent NYSERDA Program Changes
The following is a brief summary of recent program changes to the more common NYSERDA Programs.  For a list of other NYSERDA program opportunities, click here to go to the NYSERDA Funding Opportunities webpage.

Energy Tip!
PHANTOM LOAD

Instead of just turning your electronics off it is better to unplug them because even when they're "off" they still draw electricity from the outlet - something known as a "phantom load."
