September 2009
Greetings from your E$C Coordinator, Diana Pangestu:

September rolls around with a full swing of conferences and initiatives addressing environmental issues, healthy living, and our built environment.  But first, check out NYSERDA's Commercial Lighting Program - an incentive program for architects, interior designers, and other contractors creating spaces with energy efficient lighting. See below for more details.

Two conferences that you might not know about are the Staten Island Economic Development Corp's Health & Environment Conference (Sept. 24) and the Metro NY Chapter, American Planning Association's biennial conference - Planning for the New York Region in Challenging Economic Times (Sept. 25). Your E$C Coordinator will speak on NYSERDA Programs for energy efficiency projects so that you can access the available resources for your green project. Check out the news below for more details.

Plus Green from the Ground Up will be coming to Washington Heights October 6 to teach building managers and shareholders how to green their multifamily building.  Look below for more information.

The Energy $mart Communities Newsletter disseminates information on NYSERDA programs and incentives, energy efficiency projects, contractor and building owner trainings, and partner news and events.

What is the Commercial Lighting Program (CLP)?

The Commercial Lighting Program promotes effective, energy-efficient lighting by providing training and assistance to lighting practitioners in designing and installing these systems in commercial areas 1,000 to approximately 100,000 square feet. The program seeks to increase the availability and sales of energy-efficient lighting products and to educate building owners and managers on the benefits of effective, energy-efficient lighting.

What Projects are Eligible?
In order to qualify for incentives, the project must meet the program criteria for energy efficiency and quality, use all new fixtures or fixture kits (lamp/ballast only replacements are not eligible), and the end-user must be a customer of Central Hudson, Con Edison, NYSEG, National Grid, Orange and Rockland, or Rochester Gas and Electric and pay into the System Benefits Charge (SBC).

What Does this Program Offer?
The Commercial Lighting Program offers Lighting Practitioners:
▪  Tools and resourcesfor designing and installing effective, energy-efficient lighting that meet specific needs and provide better illumination;
▪  Training sessions on effective lighting design and implementation with additional web based resources;
▪  Cash incentives for qualified lighting projects with bonuses for the use of advanced technology and/or exceeding Code;
▪  Cash awards for Program Competitions based on the number of projects upgraded with effective lighting;
▪  Demonstration project awards for exemplary lighting designs
▪  Marketing incentives; and
▪  Incentives to offset costs for professional lighting certification.

Who can Participate as a Business Partner?
A Business Partner may be an electrical or lighting contractor, distributor, lighting designer, interior designer, architect, engineer, energy service company (ESCO), manufacturer's representative, or other lighting decision maker. Each Business Partner company must have at least one CLP trained participant who will serve as the Program contact. The company must sign a Participation Agreement and submit at least one project within six months of becoming a Business Partner. In return, Business Partners will be listed on the Program Web site, receive support from a CLP Account Manager and the Technical Specialist, and be eligible to receive Program incentives and awards.

How do I Participate in the Commercial Lighting Program?

A Survey of Solar Energy Roof Applications for NYC: Solar Thermal, Photovoltaics, Green Roofs and White Roofs

Our roofs have an enormous potential to accomodate clean solar energy applications and therefore to address a number of our most pressing local energy challenges, including the urban heat island effect, escalating household energy costs, power failure, growing carbon emissions, and poor air quality.  In this workshop Solar One will introduce, define and discuss the economic and quality of life implications of three solar rooftop applications that have considerable promise in the five borough area: solar thermal technology, photovoltaics and white roofs.

Navigating NYC's Recycling Landscape

Residential building managers, superintendents, board members and others will benefit from this presentation from the Office of Recycling Outreach and Education (OROE).  Hear about new recycling laws and old misconceptions. Find out how to avoid fines, improve your recycling program and get your tenants to recycle.  Learn about other ways to reduce waste, recycle more and help make NYC a little greener. OROE is a program of the Council on the Environment of New York City.

Combating Rising Energy Costs with Energy Efficiency for Multifamily Buildings

Concerned about the increasing costs of energy in your building?  Learn how to improve your building's energy efficiency in lighting, appliances, and heating systems, thereby lowering your fuel and utility bills.  Also find out what government and utility incentives are available for your building.

Free!  Refreshments will be served.  Vendors will be available to answer any technical questions about energy audits, different roof applications, and recycling.
