For those of you who are parents or teachers, did you know that NYSERDA also offers free sustainability curriculum and tools for teachers? In addition, NYSERDA is also offering a grant to educators who are proactive in greening their schools. Bring this information to your principal or the next PTA meeting! NYSERDA Incentive 1: Energy Smart Students Program
|
The Energy Smart Students program is a statewide energy education program providing FREE workshops to educators who work with students in grades K-12. This program provides professional development for educators to learn about energy and its impact on the environment, the economy, and society.
What this Program Offers:The new academic year is right around the corner, but at the Energy Smart Students Program, learning is a year-long process! This summer, take some time to attend a free Energy Smart Students workshop. At our workshops, you'll receive a tote bag filled with lesson plans, correlated to the New York State Learning Standards, as well as posters and classroom materials.
Who is Eligible:
With several workshops for K-12 educators, including two dedicated to
solar energy, we can help you prepare to address one of the most
important issues of our time: energy.

NYSERDA Incentive 2: Climate Change and Energy Efficiency Challenge - $500 Awards Available for K-12 Educators
|
The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) is offering awards of up to $500 per classroom to spur creative approaches to encouraging energy-efficient behavior in school, at home, and in the community. NYSERDA's Energy Smart Students program will fund up to 30 innovative projects that increase students' energy and global climate change knowledge and awareness, while providing student leadership opportunities and outreach to the community. Kindergarten through grade 12 teachers and informal educators are invited to apply. Applications must be received by September 30, 2009.Funds can be used to purchase supplies or equipment for use in hands-on activities related to energy efficiency or for community education events. Winners will be chosen based on their creativity in delivering the climate change message and the extent to which students take a leadership role in school and community efforts. Extra points will be awarded to schools with greater than 50% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch and for projects adopting a multi-disciplinary approach involving two or more subject areas. NYSERDA Incentive 3: $30,000 Grant for Energy Studies for Schools, Universities/Colleges, Municipal Govts, Hospitals, and Not-for-Profits

Program Opportunity Notice (PON) 4 offers funding for eligible participants to conduct Energy Conservation Studies. This program has $5 million available. Applications are accepted Monday, July 13, 2009 through March 15, 2010 (by 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time) on a first-come, first-served basis, or until funds are fully committed, whichever occurs first.Eligibility: Municipal governments, public K-12 schools, Boards of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES); public universities or colleges (including SUNY, SUNY community colleges, CUNY, and CUNY community colleges), public and private hospitals, and not-for-profits (defined as a Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)(3) qualifying organization) incorporated prior to February 17, 2009. Energy Conservation Studies Funded by this program can study the following topics: energy efficiency; solar thermal, biomass, fuel cells, small wind; energy management personnel and vehicles. Small municipalities may also apply for studies of the following topics: material conservation and transportation. Grant amount: the lesser of $30,000, or 100% of the cost of the study, or 25% of the annual energy cost of studied buildings (electricity, heating fuel), or vehicle fleets (vehicle fuel). Incentive 4: Grant for Purchase and Installation of Energy Efficiency Measures Pay for 100% of Project Cost
|
NYSERDA announces the availability of $74 million through RFP
1613, Project Implementation for State Energy Program. RFP 1613 has a competitive application
process and funds will be awarded based on the value of the project. Selection
criteria include cost effectiveness, leveraging of funds, benchmarking, and compliance
with New York State Energy Conservation Code.
Eligibility: Eligible applicants include municipal governments, public K-12 schools,
public universities or colleges (including SUNY, SUNY community colleges, CUNY,
CUNY community colleges), hospitals and non-profit organizations (defined as a
Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)(3) qualifying organization formed prior to
February 17, 2009). Projects Funded: Each proposed project
must fall into one of the following categories: energy efficiency; renewable
energy; or alternative fuel vehicles. Grant Amount: Each applicant will be eligible to receive
funding up to 100% of the project cost with a limit of $1,000,000 per applicant.

discuss the benefits of renewable energy and the work of Solar One in promoting
sustainability citywide.
Tues, Aug 18, 8 pm - FILM: "The Garden." 103rd St Community Garden, 105 East 103rd
St, Manhattan. FREE. NYRP and East Harlem Preservation present a
screening of an Oscar-nominated documentary about the fate of the nation's
largest urban farm. Located in South
Central Los Angeles and facing the threat of bulldozing for redevelopment, this
14-acre farm becomes the focus of a community in a film that asks tough
questions about land use, human rights, and equality in modern-day America.
Sat, Aug 22, 3 pm - Sun to Stars South Asian Culture Festival.
Solar One, 2420 FDR Drive, Manhattan.
FREE. Inspired by the traditional all-night concerts along India's
Ganges River, Sun to Stars evokes the traditional Indian concerts where
performers and audiences interact in an informal setting to create an intimate
artistic experience. The festival is
solar powered by the energy collected by the panels on Solar One building's
roof. A marketplace featuring South
Asian cuisine and local organizations will complement the performance.
Thu, Aug 27, 7 pm - NYRP Sustainable Summer Series: Green Roof Workshop with GreenItYourself. Toyota Children's Learning Garden, 603 E 11th
St, Manhattan. FREE. Landscape architect Lori Gibbs and green
specialist, designer and sculptor Atom Cianfarani will host a workshop on green
roofing, providing neighborhood residents with tips and techniques to gardening
in small spaces.
